2. What is this about?
This weekend, I went shopping for books.
I went with a printout of your survey responses in my
hand.
With your responses in mind, I went out in search of
books you might like. I thought of your personalities
and your reading desires and picked books that I felt
you would truly love.

night to teach other slaves how to
read and write.”

Jazz band, has a crush on the hottest
girl in the school, and is constantly

with leukemia, Steven's world is turned
upside down. He is forced to deal with
his brother's illness and his parents'
attempts to keep the family in one piece.
Salted with humor and peppered with
devastating realities, DRUMS, GIRLS,
AND DANGEROUS PIE is a
heartwarming journey through a year in
the life of a family in crisis.

5. Getting the Girl
Cameron Wolfe is the quiet one in his
family, not a soccer star like his brother
Steve or a charming fighter with a new
girl every week like his brother Rube.
Cam would give anything to be near one
of those girls, to love her and treat her
right. He especially likes Rube's latest,
Octavia, with her brilliant ideas and
bright green eyes. But what woman like
that would want a loser like him?
Maybe Octavia would, Cam discovers.
Maybe he'd even have something to
say. And those maybes change
everything: winning, loving, losing, the
Wolfe brothers, and Cameron himself. Who do I think would like this book?

7. Free? Stories
about Human
Rights
A boy who thinks that school is "slavery" learns
the true meaning of the word when he stumbles
on a secret child-labor factory. A Palestinian boy,
mute from trauma, releases kites over a wall to a
hilltop settlement, each bearing a message of
peace. This inspiring, engaging anthology
gathers an international roster of authors to
explore such themes as asylum, law, education,
and faith — from a riveting tale of an attempt to
find drinking water after Hurricane Katrina; to a
chilling look at a future where microchips track
every citizen’s every move; to a hilarious police
interrogation involving the London Tower, the
Crown Jewels, and a Ghanaian boy with a
passion for playing marbles.

Twisted

be the kind of guy who faded into the
background. But since he got busted
for doing graffiti on the school, and
spent the summer doing outdoor work
to pay for it, he stands out like you
wouldn?t believe. His new physique
attracts the attention of queen bee
Bethany Milbury, who just so happens
to be his father?s boss?s daughter,
the sister of his biggest enemy? and
Tyler?s secret crush. And that sets off
a string of events and changes that
have Tyler questioning his place in
school, in his family, and in the world.

9. A comedy/sci-fi fantasy about Oliver Watson,
an overweight 12-year-old from Omaha, NE,
who fools his family and classmates into
thinking that he is slow-witted when in fact he
is the world's third-richest person. He
overthrows foreign dictators, owns
corporations, is a successful inventor and
investor, and is on the way to attaining his
goal of world domination. This evil
supergenius, who makes Artemis Fowl look
ready for sainthood, has the appeal of a
cartoon villain. His father and arch nemesis is
too involved in running a local PBS affiliate
and too uninvolved in his son. What Oliver
really wants is his dad's approval and
attention. He decides that the way to get this
is to win the election for president of the
eighth-grade class at Gale Sayers Middle
School. Lieb perfectly captures the wise-guy
sarcasm and trash mouth of a seventh-grade
evil genius. Readers will love the sci-fi/fantasy
touches, from Oliver's elaborate underground
lair to the transmitter implanted in his jaw and
his installing root beer and chocolate milk at
the school's water fountain (of course, only he
knows how to make it work).

10. The Wave
(Note: Mrs. Mohr HIGHLY recommends
this book. It is short but impactful).
The Wave is based on a true incident
that occured in a high school history
class in Palo Alto, California, in 1969.
The powerful forces of group pressure
that pervaded many historic movements
such as Nazism are recreated in the
classroom when history teacher Burt
Ross introduces a "new" system to his
students. And before long "The Wave,"
with its rules of "strength through
discipline, community, and action, "
sweeps from the classroom through the
entire school. And as most of the
students join the movement, Laurie
Saunders and David Collins recognize
the frightening momentum of "The
Wave" and realize they must stop it
before it's too late.

Newark, New Jersey, Rameck,
George,and Sampson could easily have

available to them in the medical and
dental professions, they made a pact
among themselves that they would
become doctors. It took a lot of

one another—but despite all the

13. Three Little Words
(True Story)
An inspiring true story of the tumultuous nine
years Ashley Rhodes-Courter spent in the
foster care system, and how she triumphed
over painful memories and real-life horrors to
ultimately find her own voice.
