What is FTTx?
Fiber to the x (FTTx) is a generic term for any broadband network architecture that uses optical fiber to
replace all or part of the usual metal local loop used for last mile communication. The generic term
originated as a generalization of several configurations of fiber deployment (FTTN, FTTC, FTTB, FTTH), all
starting by FTT but differentiated by the last letter, which is substituted by an “x” in the generalization.
● FTTN (Fiber-ode) - Fiber is terminated in a street cabinet up to several kilometers away
from the customer premises, with the final connection being copper.
● FTTC (Fiber-to-the-cabinet or fiber-to-the-curb) - This is very similar to FTTN, but the
street cabinet is closer to the user's premises; typically within 300m.
● FTTB (Fiber-to-the-building or Fiber-to-the-basement) - Fiber reaches the boundary of
the building, such as the basement in a multi-dwelling unit, with the final connection
to the individual living space being made via alternative means.
● FTTH (Fiber-to-the-home) - Fiber reaches the boundary of the living space, such as a
box on the outside wall of a home.
Advantages of FTTH
● FTTH offers more Bandwidth, more flexibility, more reliability than alternatives, at a low enough
cost.
● FTTH is also the only technology that will meet the needs of the foreseeable future, when 3D
"holographic“High-definition television and Games will be in everyday use.
● Think about 100 Mbps to 1 Gigabits per second speed. Copper can't do even 1/1000th of that
bandwidth, and then not for more than a few hundred yards.
● Easily Upgradeable.
● Future-proofing technology.
What is PON?
Passive Optical Networks
XPON is a point-to-multipoint access mechanism. Its main characteristic is the use of passive
splitters in the fiber distribution network, enabling one single feeding fiber from the provider’s
central office to serve multiple homes and small businesses.
XPON Comes in two Flavors :
EPON ( Ethernet Passive Optical Network )
GPON ( Gigabit Passive Optical Network )

Network Devices and components Used in XPON?
XPON network consists of mainly two active transmission equipment:
● Optical Line Termination (OLT) – It is the endpoint hardware device in a passive optical network (PON)
which acts as an intelligent converter of fiber signals into ethernet frames .
The OLT contains a central processing unit (CPU), passive optical network cards, a gateway router (GWR) . It can
transmit a data signal to users at 1490 nanometers (nm). That signal can serve up to 128 ONU’s (GPON) & 64
ONU’s (EPON) at a range of up to 12.5 miles by using optical splitters.
A single fiber from the OLT runs to a passive Optical Splitter (passive means, it does not require any power to
operate) which is located near the users' locations.
The Optical Splitter merely divides the optical power into N separate paths to the users. The optical paths can
vary between 2 to 128.
From the Optical Splitter, a single mode (SM) fiber strand run to each user. This is shown in figure 1.1.
XPON adopts two multiplexing mechanisms-
a) in downstream direction (i.e. from OLT to users), data packets are transmitted in a broadcast manner, but
encryption (AES) is used to prevent eavesdropping,
b) in upstream direction (i.e. from users to OLT), and data packets are transmitted in a TDMA manner.
Figure – 1.1 – Optical Signal Split from OLT
OLT Characteristics :
● Laser transmitter (1490-nm);
● Laser receivers (1310-nm);
● Optical Network Unit (ONU) / Optical Network Termination (ONT) -
It translates light signals from the fiber optic into electronic signals that the switch/router can read/detect.
ONU Characteristics :
– Power for ONU
– Laser transmitter (1310-nm);
– Laser receivers (1490-nm);
Excitel Fiber
Types Of ONU’s :
Stand-alone ONU : In the stand-alone ONU, ONU is connected to an OLT device via OFC at a PON port. At the
user's premises, this stand-alone ONU is then connected to a router with the help of which the user can get wireless
connectivity.
Wifi ONU Single Band - N Series Single Band (300 Mbps) : In the WiFi ONU, ONU is connected to an OLT device via
OFC at a PON port. At the user's premises, the user can directly get wireless connectivity without the need of any
router. It supports wi-fi for 50 Mbps packages and on copper it can speed up to 1 Gig.
Wifi ONU Dual Band - AC Series Dual Band (750 Mbps) : In the WiFi ONU, ONU is connected to an OLT device via
OFC at a PON port. At the user's premises, the user can directly get wireless connectivity without the need of any
router.Depending upon the speed it is mainly used for packages leverage by Excitel for 100 ,200 & 300 Mbps.
An optical network Unit (ONU) is used to terminate the fiber optic line, De-multiplex the signal into its component
parts (Internet access), and provide power/signal to subscriber. The ONT must derive its power from the customer
premises electrical supply.
Network Devices/Components Used:
Splitters
Passive Optical Network (PON) splitters play an important role in Fiber to the Home (FTTH) networks by allowing a
single PON network interface to be shared among many subscribers.
● Splitters contain no electronics and use no power. They are the network elements that put the passive in
Passive Optical Network and are available in a variety of split ratios, including 1:2, 1:4 1:8, 1:16, and 1:32.
● These devices are used to distribute the optical network further such that the input as an optical fiber signal is split
into a multiplexed optical signal output.
Insertion Losses ( Attenuation) of Different Splitter types :
NOTE: There are two types of splitter used within the current type of network set up
⇨ Plc splitter 1:8 (Primary Splitter) - Planar Lightwave Circuit Splitters are used in FTTX applications.
Signal loss during the splitting of light beam in a 1:8 splitter is -10.5 dB. They are connected between
the ONT and FMS (long distance signal transmission during the network redistribution)
⇨ blockless fibre splitter 1:8 (Secondary Splitter)
PLC splitter 1:8 (Primary Splitter) blockless fibre splitter 1:8 (Secondary Splitter)
● FMS – Fiber Management System used at ERP location for terminating the optical signal and redistributing
the network optical signals to & fro OLT using fiber cables .
Excitel Fiber
● PON SFP – Laser transmitters inserted in OLT which propagates signal between 5DMB to 7DBM at a
wavelength 1490 .

respective teams
(CC,BDTeam,Finance) with regards to material (ONU/OLT)
so that he/she can initiate the procedure for dispatch.
2. Dispatch process is initiated and material is sent via courier to the
concerned partner.
This process will take 2-3 days.
4. As soon as material reaches at ERP end , PE will go and installs the
setup accordingly.
5. PE will coordinate with netmon team and provides access for
configuration of OLT.
6. Once the setup is ready and is in production , the same will be
reflected on netmon software (INMS) for monitoring aspect.
6
Network
Deployment
according to
Design Final Design/Changes
1. There may be chances of deviation in network which can occur up to
20% of the agreed design.
2. If any changes are made during Roll out except than the agreed
design, PE will update the same to
designer and capture the splitter data (Primary/Secondary) so that
same can be drafted on GIS.
3. Meanwhile if there are no changes made and ERP has rolled out
according to design agreed ,
still PE will update the splitter data (Primary/Secondary) to designer so
that same can be drafted on INMS.
7 INMS Designing Bottleneck/Monitoring
1. Once the data is drafted on GIS, same needs to be captured on
INMS
2. Currently designer are using "Image Interpretation" knowledge base
as a point of contact in order to
recreate the necessary design on INMS.
Excitel Fiber
3. Information needed on INMS like assets/SP name/naming
conventions needs to be drafted
manually one by one which is quite time taking process.
8
Acceptance
Testing /Final
Training &
Handover
Final Confirmation for
deployment
1. Once the fiber laying is completed and few installation's are done at
customer end
, an AT (Acceptance Testing) will be done randomly by netmon team
choosing any customer
ONU power level and speed test. This signifies the health of network
laid by ERP.
2. PE will be at ERP end and is touch with netmon team for support.
3. After testing completed by netmon team , ERP can initiate
installations in bulk.
4. Training for the network laying/equipments (FTTH) will be provided
