What is internet of things ??
An internetwork of everything we can see, be it animals, bulbs, TV,
chair, dustbin or anything for that matter, all of which possess a
unique identity, identifiable globally, each individually able to send
and receive data (i.e., communicate) over the network without
much human interference enabling them to be “smart things”
rather than being just “things”.
If we just elaborate the term “internet of things”, two words are used
here- internet and things. Things here can be anything, living or non-
living that has the ability to send, receive and analyze data over a
network, where this network here is referred to as the Internet.
To understand it in a simple way, consider the following example:
a thermometer placed outside your home and the Air
Conditioner are connected through a suitable network and can
share information over the network, the thermometer would
send the measured temperature to your Air Conditioner, which
itself in turn is able to analyze the temperature measure it
receives from the thermometer and change its temperature
settings itself. A better example can be that suppose the shirt
that we wear is also part of the interconnected things, it also
receives the temperature measurement and then it adjusts its
clothing settings to suit the human body. Another simple
example is that, trolley bags could transport themselves after
receiving data from all the barriers in the way leading to
revolutionary reduce in labor work.
All this achieved without any human interference, obviously, it is
the next technological revolution.
Trends in IoT development:
The first thing we need to worry about is the information boom
once such an internetwork of things comes into order. Enormous
amount of data will be generated, stored, analyzed and
shared. What networking protocols should be followed to
enable such vast amount of data sharing. These protocols must
also ensure data security, because human beings are going to
be reliable on it in a big way.
A lot of devices will be sending and receiving data, consuming
a lot of energy. Although we already have achieved big
milestones in manufacturing low energy consuming devices,
better would be if most of the devices would be self-sustainable.
We need interoperable devices, i.e., we need devices to be able to
communicate even if they have different architecture, one
centralized and another distributed.
Other important issue that automatically follows from everything are
standards we need to make IoT more adoptable and secure. As for
example if we do not use the IPv6 addressing standard we cannot
reach the whole globe, which cannot be a success to IoT.
The open standard issue, that is what standards to follow for IoT, is the
one I expect to be most crucial for the next 5 years and should be the
field in which more work is done because developing common
standards and protocols are essential to make IoT a secured and
acceptable future technology.
My interest area in Internet of Things is to study and refine common
protocols and standards that will allow such a diverse collection of smart
things to communicate and share information. The most important issue is
the security of the network.
How I would innovate? Actually, I am interested in looking how efficiently
artificial intelligence and machine learning can effect the behavior of
these “smart things”.
I intend to make this enormous information sharing more secure, more
reliable, one that itself can reduce data redundancy without affecting the
data consistency. In simple words I want to optimize IoT in a way so that
not only industries or transportation services make its use, but also it makes
a big impact on daily routine of normal people and also explore the
second point of this slide.
