We have long recognised that the mind and body are linked and that one influences the other. However, we used to think that the mind - body link was a "top down" one. We now see that things are rather different. It is as if the mind acts as a “User interface” rather than an Operating System. The operating traffic goes two ways - from body to mind just as much as mind to body. Embodied cognition is a field of study, seen by some as a ‘silent revolution’ that explores the link between body and mind and this presentation reviews the relevance of this to rehabilitation.

Emotion is a complex psycho-physiological experience of an individual's state of mind as interacting with biochemical (internal) and environmental (external) influences. James-Lange Theory: The James-Lange theory of emotion argues that an event causes physiological arousal first and then we interpret this arousal. Only after our interpretation of the arousal can we experience emotion. If the arousal is not noticed or is not given any thought, then we will not experience any emotion based on this event. EXAMPLE: You are walking down a dark alley late at night. You hear footsteps behind you and you begin to tremble, your heart beats faster, and your breathing deepens. You notice these physiological changes and interpret them as your body's preparation for a fearful situation. You then experience fear. Cannon-Bard Theory: EXAMPLE: You are walking down a dark alley late at night. You hear footsteps behind you and you begin to tremble, your heart beats faster, and your breathing deepens. At the same time as these physiological changes occur you also experience the emotion of fear. Schachter-Singer Theory: EXAMPLE: You are walking down a dark alley late at night. You hear footsteps behind you and you begin to tremble, your heart beats faster, and your breathing deepens. Upon noticing this arousal you realize that is comes from the fact that you are walking down a dark alley by yourself. This behavior is dangerous and therefore you feel the emotion of fear. Facial Feedback Theory EXAMPLE: You are walking down a dark alley late at night. You hear footsteps behind you and your eyes widen, your teeth clench and your brain interprets these facial changes as the expression of fear. Therefore you experience the emotion of fear. Positive Emotions: Love is a very basic and necessary emotion. If a child is nurtured in a loving family where all members respect and love each other, he or she will develop into an adult who behaves in a manner similar to the behavioral patterns that he or she learned as a child. Negative Emotions: If the child is raised in an atmosphere of anger and hostility, that child will develop into a very troubled adult who thinks that angry and hostile feelings are normal.

Motivation refers to an internal state or condition that activates behavior and gives it direction. Emotion is a state involving pattern of facial and bodily changes, cognitive appraisals, subjective feelings, and tendencies toward action. Emotions are positive or negative feelings generally in reaction to stimuli that are accompanied by physical, psychological arousal and related behavior. Emotions give life its feeling and meaning. They enrich life. Without emotions, things would be quite a routine and dull.

Provide a 1-page description of a stressful event currently occurring in your life. Then, referring to information you learned throughout this course, address the following: · What physiological changes occur in the brain due to the stress response? · What emotional and cognitive effects might occur due to this stressful situation? · Would the above changes (physiological, cognitive, or emotional) be any different if the same stress were being experienced by a person of the opposite sex or someone much older or younger than you? · If the situation continues, how might your physical health be affected? · What three behavioral strategies would you implement to reduce the effects of this stressor? Describe each strategy. Explain how each behavior could cause changes in brain physiology (e.g., exercise can raise serotonin levels). · If you were encouraging an adult client to make the above changes, what ethical considerations would you have to keep in mind? How would you address those ethical considerations? In addition to citing the online course and the text, you are also required to cite a minimum of two scholarly sources. Please see the Academic Resources section under Course Home to use the Argosy University online library to find appropriate scholarly sources. For reputable web sources, look for .gov or .edu sites as opposed to .com sites. Please do not use Wikipedia. Your paper should be double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font, and with normal 1-inch margins; written in APA style; and free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page. The body of the paper should be at least 6 pages in length Stress hormones increase blood pressure and have various other effects on the body that might not be adaptive over long periods. Selye proposed the concept of the general adaptation syndrome to account for the effect of stress on the body Currently, there are two primary systems for the classification of psychological disorders—The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) (American Psychiatric Association, 2013), and The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) (World Health Organization, 1992). Major depressive disorder is characterized by a lowering of mood, energy, and activity that results in significant distress or impairment in life. There is much research focusing on imbalances in the monoamine neurotransmitters (dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin) in people suffering from depressive disorders In the brain, the amygdala and the anterior cingulate cortex show structural and functional abnormalities in people with depression. Bipolar disorder is characterized by an extremely elevated mood with increases in activity and energy (manic phase) followed by an equally low mood with decreases in activity and energy (depressive phase), resulting in significant distress or imp ...

Our backs are like superheroes, holding us up and helping us move around. But sometimes, even superheroes can get hurt. That’s where slip discs come in. They’re like when the inside of a special part of our back pushes out a little. This can make our backs feel sore and uncomfortable. When our backs have a slipped disc, there are signs we can watch out for. First, there’s pain in one spot, like the lower back or neck. It can feel sharp and spread to other places. Then, our arms or legs might feel tingly or numb, like when they fall asleep. We might even have trouble moving some muscles or notice changes in how fast we react.

A big part of cleaning up our lives requires us to change up bad habits, which can be a lot easier said than done. Last week on TCLP, I talked about how all our habits and everything that is “automatic” to us is governed by the subconscious. That’s why it’s important for us to learn how to work with our own subconscious minds and get them on board with the healthy changes we want to make in our lives. Today I’m going to be covering some effective methods to work with our subconscious minds to create cleaner habits that become so automatic we don’t even have to think about them. 🩷

Title: Application of Checklist-Based Nursing Care Process in Patients Undergoing Intervention for Coronary Chronic Total Occlusion: A Quasi-Randomized Study Presenter: Sonia Pal, M.Sc. Nursing 2nd Year Journal: BMC Nursing (2023) Authors: Xia Ge, Haiyang Wu, Zhe Zang, and Jiayi Xie DOI: 10.1186/s12872-023-03627-8 Study Overview: This presentation focuses on the effectiveness of a checklist-based nursing care process for patients undergoing interventions for coronary chronic total occlusion (CTO). The study employs a quasi-randomized design to assess improvements in patient care outcomes. Key Points: Background: CTO interventions are complex, and traditional nursing methods have not been highly effective, necessitating the exploration of new approaches. Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of a checklist-based nursing care process in improving care quality, reducing patient anxiety, increasing patient satisfaction, and minimizing adverse events. Methodology: Design: Quasi-randomized study Setting: Department of Cardiology, Shengjing Hospital, China Medical University, Shenyang, China Participants: 120 patients undergoing CTO interventions Groups: Intervention group (checklist-based care) and control group (standard care) Tools: Preoperative and postoperative PCI nursing care checklists, Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, satisfaction questionnaires for doctors and patients Ethical Considerations: The study adhered to the Declaration of Helsinki, with informed consent obtained from all participants. Results: The study aimed to demonstrate that checklist-based nursing care could enhance nursing efficiency and patient outcomes compared to conventional methods. Quality Control: A quality control team ensured adherence to the checklist and study protocol, with regular training and supervision of nursing staff. Conclusion: The presentation concludes with findings supporting the effectiveness of checklist-based nursing care in CTO interventions, suggesting improvements in patient care processes and outcomes. The study highlights the importance of structured nursing protocols in complex medical procedures.

Our spinal cord has various small discs stacked one on top of another. It gives shape to our backs and creates a support system for the body to stand on. Each disc comprises a strong outer ring and a softer, gel-like inner core. When the inner part comes out through the outer ring due to injury or weakness, it results in what’s commonly referred to as a slipped, herniated, or prolapsed disc. This condition often triggers discomfort and pain.
