  3. 3. OVER VIEW Air travel has witnessed a considerable growth in recent years. Improved safety standards, opening of new airports, ease of visa restrictions and the growth of budget airlines have all led to more passengers flying across international borders. This has in tum led to the emergence of many national and intemational associations in the aviation industry. Currently IATA (International Air Transport Association) www. iata. org and ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) www. icao. int are the two international associations that monitor and control the global aviation industry. IATA is the trade association of world's airlines representing around 240 airlines and basically supports airline activities includ- ing formulating industry policy and standards. ICAO is a specialized UN agency that consists of around 191 State members plus global industry and aviation organizations. The prime objective of ICAO is to develop international standards and recom- mended practices to be used by the member States while developing their legally-binding national civil aviation regulations. Unfortunately there are no international organizations that look specifically into the issues of aviation ground services and ser- vice providers and set standards and policies for this industry. This is where IASO (intemational Aviation Senrices Organization), IHAO (International Handling Agents’ Organization) and IFSO (International Fuel Service Organization) attempt to close the gap.
