Advisors Can Help
You Increase Returns
You’ve planned, saved, and invested throughout your career and there’s a good chance you know your investments
very well. There are fees associated with buying and owning investments and paying an investment advisor adds
another fee. You may be wondering if this advisor fee is worth it and what value will an advisor bring? Will you see
a greater increase in your returns working with an investment advisor?
A new study out of Vanguard shows that those working with an investment advisor can see an increase in their
investments by three percentage points. How? The report concludes there are five primary ways investors can
yield greater returns.1
1. Francis M. Kinniry Jr., CFA, Colleen M. Jaconetti, CPA, CFP ®, Michael A. DiJoseph, CFA, and Yan Zilbering. “Putting a value on your value: Quantifying Vanguard
Advisor’s Alpha.” Vanguard. March 2014.
2. 2 Advisors help clients diversify.
Looking to allocate your assets in different ways but
you’re not sure where to start? An investment advisor
is well-skilled in diversifying investments and can
advise you on how much you should invest in stocks,
bonds, international, real estate, oil, or other important
assets. With the right allocation, Vanguard says that
you could increase your returns by 0.75%.

Working with an investment advisor can help keep you
focused on the long term. They urge clients to hold,
stay patient and be disciplined to a regular investment
plan which can bring up to a 1.5% increase in returns.
Advisors help protect clients from chasing short term
trends or the “hot place to be.” Advisors serve as a
stable coach throughout the ups and downs of the
market. They can help provide reassurance to clients
that may be starting to panic about their choice of
investments during a crisis.

Advisors help clients avoid
paying high fees.
They help keep your fees low by investing in
institutional-grade mutual funds and other low-cost
exchange funds that are more affordable than costly
retail mutual funds.
3
Advisors will help rebalance
accounts as needed.
You can increase the performance of your investments
by allowing an investment advisor to review your
account on a systematic basis and rebalance as needed.
Successful rebalancing can add 0.35% to 0.40% of
value to your investments.
4
Advisors help reduce the amount
of taxes paid over the course
of retirement.
When it comes time to retire and use your assets an
advisor can evaluate the mix of taxable, tax deferred and
tax free accounts to confirm which distribution strategy
leads to paying lower taxes. This can add another .70%
to your returns and protect more of your wealth while
achieving the goal of not outliving your money.
In summary that’s how financial advisors can add
approximately three percentage points to investment
returns. To be clear if after working with an advisor
your return rose form 5% to 8% you really got a 40%
increase and the Vanguard study only focused on
investment results! Typically other areas of concern
include: Financial Planning, Estate Planning, and
Insurance Planning.
An Advisor acts as your Chief Financial Officer. (CFO) We
believe there is tremendous value in working with the
right coach to protect your assets. Our most successful
clients view this as a hindrance and not a hobby.
