2. THE AUDIENCE FOR MY MEDIA
PRODUCT
Our films primary demographic would be people aged 15-24. The horror and thriller genre
generally attracts more males than females. However, our central protagonist is a female and
so unintentionally, our movie will attract more females than males in this case. Many males will
still watch our movie however, males are more interested in male central protagonists and vice
versa. This is due to the fact that the audience likes to be able to identify with the central
protagonists, and even aspire to be like them. There will be other male characters within the
movie, however they have not yet been introduced in the opening. I predict that our audience
gender ratio will be around 60/40, with more women than men.
Our central protagonist will appeal to the majority of women as she is a strong and powerful
woman. This is something that, historically, movies have lacked. This is due to the fact that
women have been consistently victimised and made to appear as weak, in need of aid and as
the damsel in distress. This is found in movies, predominately those of the action and horror
genre.
3. Anna is 17 and is
currently in full time
education studying
for her A Levels.
Anna has her own car
and is able to drive.
Anna dislikes
animal cruelty.
Anna dislikes how
women are often
victimised in
movies.
Anna prefers art
house cinemas
over multiplex
cinemas.
Anna prefers things that
have character over
things that are modern
and new.
This is Anna, she is an example of someone from my target audience and
here are some things about her:
Anna loves riddles,
puzzles and mysteries
that need to be solved.
Anna loves to feel
empowered and
strong.
4. Anna prefers to shop in vintage stores instead of high end stores and a lot of high street stores
she tends not to like. She prefers vintage stores because the clothes they sell have a lot more
character than the ones in high street stores. She listens to a lot of alternative and indie pop
and rock such as Taking Back Sunday, Nirvana, Radiohead and Glass Animals and loves to go
to concerts that host this genre of music. She dislikes almost all of the music that is in the
current charts and do stay clear of general pop music like Little Mix and Justin Bieber. Anna
enjoys wearing makeup but does not indulge in makeup that tests on animals.
To relax, she loves to watch films and watch her favourite television programmes. Her favourite
films are ‘The Others’, ‘Shutter Island’, ‘Ex Machina’ and ‘Lucy’. This selection of movies contain
a strong female protagonist, are a movie distributed by an indie distributer and have
challenging plot twists within the movies which challenge her to think and question. Her
favourite television programmes are The X- Files, the Louis Theroux documentaries and
Paranormal Witness. She prefers indie films over big Hollywood blockbusters as she feels that
they're severely overrated. Anna would be the kind of girl to watch my film due to its
paranormal and supernatural elements, the fact that it is an indie production and also for the
suspense all three of the shows and movies effectively create which is replicated within my
movie. My movie would most likely be distributed by an art house theatre instead of a
multiplex cinema. This will appeal to Anna and people similar to her as she doesn’t like
multiplex cinemas and prefers things with character, instead of the more popular and modern
things.
5. Anna is currently in full time education while studying for her A-Levels. Studying A-Levels
usually means that you are prepared for the educational challenge and so watching a movie
that also challenges your views is appealing. Our movie is both mentally stimulating and
challenging. Anna is 17 and so she can drive, this means that she can drive to specific theatres
or festivals where independent films will be shown. Therefore, she’ll be able to watch my film.
A lot of alternative bands also challenge peoples views with their lyrics that are sometimes
politically orientated. Enjoying bands of this nature and genre, suggests that she will like my
movie, as my movie can be considered as quite controversial.
