Carnegie Mellon University teamed up with partner OSIsoft to learn the language of buildings. It turns out, buildings talk a lot – about lights, ventilation, air quality, all sorts of things – but it took this team, plus Microsoft Power BI to “translate” what they’re saying. With data from hundreds of devices, the University was able to make buildings, and the people who work in them, more energy efficient. With OSIsoft’s PI System in place, energy use dropped, as did the University’s costs and environmental impact.

2. Learning Energy Efficiency's Language
Imagine if a building could talk about how it was operating and the ways in
which it could be more energy efficient.
Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania—a school founded on
technology—its Center for Building Performance and Diagnostics decided to
focus on what it knew the most about: buildings. They partnered with OSIsoft
to bring the building’s systems into a single data infrastructure. Using the
OSIsoft PI System, they connected automation system, lights, ventilation, air
quality, weather, and security data sources in order to show energy usage
information in real time. Using PI Integrator, Carnegie Mellon connected to
Azure Machine Learning for predictive analytics. They also implemented Power
BI for Office 365 to give all university employees a way to see information
about the building in an accessible way
3. If science fiction has taught us anything, it’s that
talking robots will control the human race.
The predictive analytics enabled infrastructure at CMU built on top of
the OSIsoft PI System and Azure ML helped people understand that
everyone-not just the monitoring experts-could participate in making
the building more efficient. Identifying and acting on faulty equipment
was suddenly easier than ever. As a result of tapping into the building's
data, presenting it in a comprehensive way, and changing behaviors
energy consumption in the laboratory building alone dropped by
nearly one-third.
