Thank you and good day I am ….

To start, I would like to give you a little background on Micro Focus and our role as the leading enterprise application modernization software company.
Thank you and good day I am ….
I am going to talk to you today about Micro Focus and specifically about our COBOL Solution.
To start, I would like to give you a little background on Micro Focus and our role as the leading enterprise application modernization software company.
Micro Focus helps organizations drive and grow their business by providing better IT –by helping them unlock the value that already exists in their core business applications.
That’s who we are and that is our mission.
Let’s consider why.
Over many years innovation has been at the forefront for most organizations – although this has created now a very complex environment.
In any organization of any size, regardless of technical strategy or bias, the IT estate is typically an unwieldy array of disparate, heterogeneous systems, married together by a delicate fabric of dependencies and relationships. It makes understanding, prioritization, resourcing and change extremely difficult.
And as one CIO once reported, how did it get like this? It got like this one good decision at a time.
So today’s IT reality is this: demand for change, for any kind of change takes place against a backdrop of complexity, cost and confusion.
The Micro Focus belief is that you already hold all the information you need within your organization to be competitive – although it’s locked away in the complexity. We help unlock the value from that complexity.
And, since 1976, we have worked with thousands of clients to help them unlock that value.
This is what Micro Focus has excelled at for almost 40 years – as the industry has innovated, Micro Focus has been there to help customers exploit the advances in technology (all the new operating systems, new commoditized hardware platforms, virtualisation (which is certainly nothing new), web, mobile, IDEs, cloud, ...), not just supporting the technologies as a change in runtime environments, but also helping with the lifecycle of adoption – be that requirements management, testing etc.
Result is that Micro Focus has enabled exploitation of advances in technology, provided unrivalled protection of investment, enabled customer to optimize their working environments, bring benefits to their customers – all with broad options on pace of change to help with practical levels of adoption and management of the disruptions.
In terms of protecting prior investments, our uniqueness is portability. Existing, working, trusted and valued application assets can exploit the Micro Focus underlying portable architecture, such that core applications can be reused, and redeployed, without having to change.
Micro Focus has been market leader for the COBOL language, and supporting over 500 platforms over the years we’ve been able to ensure our customers’ need for flexibility and choice. Simply put, we are investing in future of application deployment, so our customers don’t have to.
So how do we go about doing this ?
For us this has always started with the application – and then, how that application is deployed, we honestly have no bias.
If you want to deploy that application on the mainframe and that is the right thing to do for your business, we can help you modernize that application – expose that app to new capabilities - and you can deploy it to the mainframe.
.. or you can deploy it to a distributed environment such as Windows, Unix or Linux
.. or you can deploy it to a highly virtualised environment that you own and operate (a private cloud if you like),
.. or you can deploy it to a highly virtualised environment you do not own and operate – a public cloud environment.
Importantly, your core applications are often based on COBOL. The ones that truly run your business, very typically are. Micro Focus exists to protect your COBOL investment:
COBOL applications written yesterday run on today’s modern platforms
COBOL applications written today will run on tomorrow’s leading platforms
COBOL is already part of the next generation of platforms
Micro Focus is investing today so that business applications can support your business for the coming generations
Throughout these journeys, our commitment is constant, it is to help you do these three things :
optimize where your applications and built, tested and deployed
exercise personal choice on the balance between speed, flexibility and risk
enable access to these applications from any device.
Fundamentally, our mantra is about helping organizations drive and grow their business by providing better IT – and we do that by helping them unlock the value that already exists in their core business applications, and moving that forward to address new and emerging business and market needs.
Providing a bridge from what already works, what already supports the business, to the new innovations, new paradigms, new environments, provides a low risk, pragmatic and high yield approach to delivering value through IT.
Let’s consider some of the challenges facing today’s IT organization and how we can help. The barriers to change that stop an organization innovating, moving forward, and delivering genuine value quickly to the business.
The barriers to change in a mainframe based IT organization may be wide and varied but often fall in to 4 broad categories.
Deliver faster – the business is demanding more to be done in less time, yet complexity and lights on burden makes that very hard.
Cost management and asset protection – major change in how IT delivers must not be at the expense of existing, trusted systems.
Variable demand – not all applications are equal, and managing the flex and scale of application demand is a growing pressure. Virtualisation, server choices, cloud, all come into play.
Access – quite simply your user community wants access from everywhere to everything and how we manage to that demand is a tough call
Platform delivery – the architectural landscape changes every year and strategy and consumer requirements do too. Meeting this through changing platform delivery is a constant. The only constant is change…
Plus of course we have to consider
Skills – how IT lines up today may not have followed the constantly evolving technical needs of its key resources.
Architectural Complexity – with each passing year the moving parts and number of technical variables increases, making change tougher still
Process Inefficiency – typically the processes haven’t kept up with the changes in technology either.
So what’s difficult about unlocking value… how big are those barriers…
The difficulty is that it is Hard to focus…
The reality for most organizations: majority of budget is spent on “keeping the lights on” (the day-to-day running of the organization). Recent research by Vanson Bourne (2013) puts the dollar figure for resolving the backlog – or IT debt – at an average of $11M per organization. Gartner says this overall global IT debt will be $1Tr in 2015.
Added to this is the unprecedented level of regulatory scrutiny in many industries, seeing a growing array of compliance measures and controls – with fixed deadlines – to add to the IT burden. Failure to comply is not an option – JP Morgan had to swallow $20Bn, yes billion, in fines in 2013.
This leaves very little time and budget to spend on innovation – innovation required to remain competitive and keep a competitive advantage. Innovation such as mobile computing initiatives, better customer management, social media, big data and Cloud for example.
And the reputation of IT suffers… reports suggest less than a third of business leaders see IT as providing what they need. Hardly surprising really.

How we solve this is to go back to first principles. What already works, what already supports the business.
Language choices, tools, skills, processes were all important, but fundamentally the APPLICATIONS you have today, and the data they use are the cornerstone of success.
These applications remain the lifeblood of the organization and it would be unthinkable for them to stop working.
However, you face challenges, pulling from different directions. Are you aligned as an organization to new business needs, and can you deliver fast enough? Flipside, where is the business heading, and are your core apps the right platform for the future?
Meeting both of those separate challenges head on is fundamental to the long term health of your core applications. Fundamental to you protecting your lifeblood.

To finish off here…
Your Applications are critical – they run your business. Their future is crucial.
The future holds a variety of challenges in terms of new technology and day to day improvements.
Visual COBOL helps tackle those challenges head on to help you build the next generation of your core systems.
Our suggested next step is always to talk with you in more detail. To find out your business drivers, to understand you application portfolio strategy, to hear more about your applications. We can then work to recommend a roadmap that works for you.
This meeting would be our investment in you – we just need to agree a date.
First, we are building on the success of last year’s Visual COBOL “innovation” campaign, which focuses on our five major attributes of Efficiency and Skills, plus Mobile, Cloud and Architecture.
We are building more impact and clarity in to these messages and starting to reinforce the real focus here around the VALUE of the APPLICATIONS that we are helping our customers protect and modernize.
You will see this in a number of ways both visually and through updated messaging. This theme will be woven throughout all campaigns in the coming year.
Our final step is always to talk again. There are many moving parts to the IT challenges and future requirements, and the next step is to listen to what our customers are aiming to achieve before making any suggestions.
This is the concept of the value profile meeting, which we provide on our dollar to progress the discussion.
