1. Proposal Outline
A. The problem of existing IT device centric smart school environment
The modernization of public education mostly thinks about the adoption of smart equipment such as
tablet, mirroring, electronic white board etc., to utilize digital contents and web based communication and
contents as well.
However, during last several years of experience, such a digital centric deployment caused many
unexpected problems in the field especially for teachers who are main contributors and leaders in class
environment.
Teachers should prepare for the class by themselves but since most teachers are not familiar with IT
equipment, it is very difficult to prepare for the daily class to utilize IT equipment without help of contents
providers who are mostly commercial companies.
So, this makes teachers frustrated and refrain from using IT equipment in the class. And further,
teachers should maintain students’ equipment in the class, which gives extra overload to teachers.
Mostly, problems caused waste of budget because of not using it frequently and increasing the burden
of teachers who are leading the class and students.
This is because there have been no solution to combine traditional analog way of teaching and
advanced digital environment.
As a conclusion, we see following problems in existing smart school environment.
 High initial cost for deployment and concern about waste of budget when not use it
 Constant electric power supply is required
 Give burden to teachers to prepare for the daily class
 Give burden to teachers to manage/maintain IT devices
 Difficult to use because most of teachers are not IT friendly yet
A. The advantage of Hybrid educational platform
Now, SOLiDEdu’s analog-digital hybrid educational platform is introduced to address such problems.
SOLiDEdu’s platform encompasses both analog paper text book and digital contents through unique
technology of dot-pattern recognition and helps teachers and students as well take advantage of conventional
way of teaching/learning while enjoying digital contents/collaborative study in cost effective and easy way.
In the first stage, teacher will use dot pattern based paper text book with digital pen to show the
contents of text book on IWB. This is very unique methodology to use paper text book instead of tablet to show
digital contents and writing of lecture. In the next stage, students will use individual digital pen and dot pattern
note or curriculum material and show/share the writings/activities in real time basis in IWB. So, still students do
not need to use tablet to share their activity. So, the cost of system is very lower than tablet based mirroring
system.
After that, when teachers and students get familiar with IT devices, classroom can employ IT devices
like the case of current smart school environment.
So, SOLiDEdu's philosophy is to give gradual change of teaching/learning experience from traditional
analog way to digital way.
For the budget provider, SOLiDEdu’s platform is very cost effective because not just of low initial cost
but also of multiple usage and easy maintenance. Teachers still can use paper text book as usual if electricity is
out, teachers still can use the screen as normal glass whiteboard if projector is not used, teachers still can use
digital pen as normal ball point pen. So, there is no worry of wasting the budget after installation.
For teachers, the only IT device to use is just the digital pen and they still can use conventional paper
text book, so the preparation of class is easier than current IT device centric methodology.
And further, it can be gradually upgraded to higher system based on the budget condition and level of
familiarity of teachers and students with IT device.
So, the advantages of hybrid platform are
 Low initial cost and no worry about wasting budget
 Cost effective and easy-to-use platform
 Combination of familiar traditional analog method and digital contents based method
 No worry of electric power supply by using paper text book as usual
 Step by step expansion toward higher level of system based on budget and familiarity of
teachers
2. Brief dot-pattern technology description
The dot-pattern technology is basically working with printed dot-pattern which is random but has pre-
defined location information. The dot-pattern will be printed on the paper, board etc., and the digital pen will read
the dot-pattern and identify the location of pen and dot-pattern address. By this, the writing of user on the dot-
pattern surface will be regenerated digitally and can be stored, shared in digital way. This can be used in
Interactive White Board and note, diary etc. And the unique dot-pattern space also can be associated with
specified pictures, contents links etc., to identify each page of paper text book, invoke digital contents.
By this, the user can use digital pen to use dot pattern based paper note, text book, IWB and digital
contents at a time.
SOLiDEdu’s hybrid platform applies this unique advantage in class.
3. Products in platform
The hybrid platform consists of below things to provide teachers with easy and convenient way of
preparation/running class and students with writing based way of collaborative studying.
 digital pen,

 dot-pattern text book,
 dot-pattern applying S/W,
 collaborative study S/W
A. Digital Pen
Digital pen ADP-601 is optical device to read the dot-pattern and send the location of writing and
pattern address to the computing device to regenerate digital writing and associated text book pages and
multimedia contents.
B. NetBoard system
NetBoard system is front type IWB which uses anti-glare multi-purpose screen, projector and
associated software.
For front type IWB, the screen is essential for long lasting usage, easy maintenance, multiple usages.
In this aspect, glass is regarded as the best material but it is not easy to handle. So, SOLiDEdu partnered
with world’s leading glass manufacturer, Corning, and developed world’s first high standard anti-glare
Gorilla glass based screen. This enables the production of high visible, high durable and strong NetBoard
system.
C. Dot pattern text book
Dot pattern text book is the paper text book with dot pattern printed in each page to identify each page
by unique assignment of dot pattern. The dot pattern size can be any size to adaptive to paper book not just
A4.
Customer provides SOLiDEdu the pdf version of book and SOLiDEdu will apply specific dot-pattern
using dot pattern applying S/W. The result is another pdf file which has dot pattern on each page of books.
Then, the pdf file will be transferred to printing company to print and make the final dot-pattern book.
Then, if we touch each page of dot-pattern book, the specific dot pattern will be recognized and the
application will show the associated page of the book. And the writing on the book will be also shown in
application. Further, when we link multimedia content with specific icon, picture etc., of book, you can also
invoke the multimedia contents from the book by touching the icon, picture etc.
This is key of dot-pattern based hybrid platform because customer still can use normal, friendly paper
text book while accessing the digital contents. Since this is just a paper text book, users do not need to
worry about power, maintenance etc.
The cost of making dot-pattern book is small because we may need to add one additional printing
layer of dot pattern. Just additional cost of ink.
D. Dot pattern applying software, RedBerry
SOLiDEdu also provide software, RedBerry, for teachers to apply dot pattern to their learning
material made from MS PowerPoint, Word, PDF etc. RedBerry imports pdf format of file and users just
assign dot patterns based on the number of pages of file. Then RedBerry gives printing file and installation
file. User will install the installation file to use in the computer. And also print the dot pattern applied file
using laser printer. Through this, user can now ready to use the dot pattern material with digital pen.
E. Collaborative study software
When teachers become familiar with dot pattern based platform, now it is possible to give digital pen
to each student to have in class collaborative study. Teacher will prepare for the dot pattern material for this
purpose and each student will do some work on that dot pattern material using digital pen to show what
he/she is doing and share the result through IWB. Teacher has full control of the use of digital pen and work
process of individual student through the IWB.
F. SNS Service
When the users of digital pen and IWB make some activities, we need to provide on-line cloud based
service to store, share in mobile environment. In this purpose, we are developing mobile education specific
SNS like service, called Pengraphy. Moreover, we also expand this service to provide education contents
generation/sharing from each users. All the digital pen and IWB users will be member of this service and in
addition, we will provide efficient way of sharing contents among users to absorb users who does not use
digital pen/IWB as well. By this, we would like to give special value to all the users in education field from
students, teachers to ordinary people who will generate any kind of educational contents.
The Pengraphy will,
1. Store and share of writing on note, books, IWB, etc. using digital pen
2. Share the contents of Pengraphy with other SNS services, such as Facebook, etc.
3. Cooperate with contents provider(either individual, company) as a market place
4. Provide personal management of study throughout education period
