• MJH Goal: To provide leadership experience for
underrepresented students where I can be an
advocate for those seeking to learn and an
advisory for those needing guidance and moral
support to improve retention

As a teacher and mentor I know the barriers that many
students face, but as a person born and raised on the South
Side of Chicago, I understand it from a personal perspective.
• Single Parent household
• Teen Parent
• Low income
• Inadequate High School Experience
• Surrounded by bad influences
• No support from family
• Low self-esteem
• Overly aggressive behavior
Balancing College
Barriers
Top reasons why students drop out of college from
my experience are:
• Finances
• Academically Underprepared
• Caring for Dependents
• Working Full Time
• Inadequate Academic Advising
• Lack of Desired Major and direction
• Quality of Instruction

Synonyms: difficulty, drawback, encumbrance, handicap, hindrance, hurdle, impediment, limitation, obstacle, preventative, restraint, restriction, stumbling block, roadblock In addition, how to address financial isssues, social interaction, campus policies and lack of academic success are also among the top issues
