throw it away… reroof, and then… reassemble the PV array.

Editor's Notes

  1. What’s Important: Retrofit roofs provide exceptional environmental and energy efficiency benefits from: Reducing heat gain through the roof assembly in warmer months Reducing heat loss through the roof assembly in colder months Retrofit walls provide a means to beautifying an existing building with more up-to-date and energy efficient wall cladding that is architecturally pleasing
  2. What’s Important: The left-hand column explains what the major benefits that retrofit presents to the design professional and building owner The right-hand column does the same but highlights some of the positive environmental impact that this concept presents as well as what else can be done during the design/construction of a retrofit to improve its benefit
  3. What’s Important: The left-hand column explains what the major benefits that retrofit presents to the design professional and building owner The right-hand column does the same but highlights some of the positive environmental impact that this concept presents as well as what else can be done during the design/construction of a retrofit to improve its benefit
  4. This slide introduces the next four slides that address and explain various solar power systems using photovoltaic (PV) technology
  5. This slide introduces the next four slides that address and explain various solar power systems using photovoltaic (PV) technology
  6. This slide brings attention to the “Pitfalls” of installing rack-mounted PV systems over existing flat or sloped roofs that have conventional roofing systems. The principle issue is the PV service life is more than the expected life of the various conventional roof membranes. Therefore, when the roof has to replaced, so does the PV system and then it has to be re-installed.
  7. This slide self-explanatory whereas with metal roofed buildings, PV mounted systems do not required penetrations through the metal for attachment.
  8. This slide summarizes the benefits of PV over standing seam metal roofs, whether for retrofit applications or new construction
  9. Problems with conventional roof types, Next slide
  10. What’s Important: This slide introduces the two basic applications of retrofit roofing and essentially what they represent to a design professional and building owner: Metal over existing flat roofs Metal over existing sloped roofs
  11. This slide illustrates pictorially Before and During construction of metal retrofit over existing flat roofs. The bottom two slides illustrates the advantage of using retrofit metal systems in new construction. This project was site-built structural concrete construction for a hotel in southern Georgia. The retrofit framing system was used in lieu of light-gauge pre-engineered trusses due to its competitiveness with other framing methods. The framing for these type of retrofit systems is essentially fabricated in the field. They come to the jobsite in standard cut-lengths (20’ +/-) and measured, cut and erected right on the existing roof top or concrete deck in this application.
  12. What’s Important: This slide introduces the two basic applications of retrofit roofing and essentially what they represent to a design professional and building owner: Metal over existing flat roofs Metal over existing sloped roofs
  13. This slide illustrates the metal over existing conventional roofed system
  14. What’s Important: This slide introduces the two basic applications of retrofit roofing and essentially what they represent to a design professional and building owner: Metal over existing flat roofs Metal over existing sloped roofs
  15. This slide illustrates pictorially Before and During/After construction of metal retrofit over problem roofs.
  16. What’s Important: This slide essentially addresses good roof design practices where the designer should include current energy standards in the overall roof assembly. It is an intro-slide for the following eleven slides.
