2. MEANING AND DEFINITIONS OF
SOCIAL CHANGE
• Social change means alteration in the structure
and functions of human society. Social change is a
general term used to describe any substantial
modification in social structure, social institutions,
social behaviour, social relations, shared values and
so on.
5. EDUCATION AS A TOOL FOR SOCIAL CHANGE
The role of education as an instrument of social
change and social development is widely
recognized today . Education can initiate social
changes by bringing about a change in outlook and
attitude of man . Changes brought about by
education are permanent and transcendent in
nature .
6. Education initiates the social changes and gives
them a direction and purpose.
It prepares the individual to adopt desirable social
changes and to adjust with such changes.
The knowledge of various social changes taking
place in community can be transmitted to the
people through the medium of education.

distributing knowledge thereby facilitating social

equip individuals to compete, which ultimately
leads to social changes.

needed to accept radical change in the society.

to welcome and accept social changes.

• Education can help us embrace social change
by cultivating a positive outlook and
broadening our thinking. Further, it can initiate
behavioral change and prompt a shift in attitude in
people, allowing them to contribute constructively
towards the growth of a progressive and tolerant
society.
