Eugen Popa: What do Ido if Iget stuck, when Iget stuck? Then
what? Imean. I’ve done an induction, and then, Idon’t know that
to do with this person…
Sean Michael Andrews: Hahaha, well… for the new hypnotist, I
would say that this will work itself out, you will gain experience and you
will instinctively know what to do with the clients. Until that happens
though, I think it’s best for a new hypnotist to do research. When the person
makes the appointment with you, find out what they want to work on, and
then, then you can do the necessary research to give you some strategies to
use during the session.
It’s funny though, Eugen, that when you first said that, the first thing that flashed into my mind
was Gil Boyne, he was one of my teachers, and there would sometimes come a period in the
therapy where he was obviously not sure which way to go. You would see him pause, and he
would sometimes put the client on hold and say: “That’s right. Now you just sit there and continue
to breath in, relaxation and exhale, and I’m going to give you a period of silence, during that
period, each time that you exhale you go deeper. That period begins now!”
And then you see him go “Hmm, what the hell am I going to do?”
And then, you know, he will get inspiration, and then he would continue with the therapy and
it always seemed to be the right thing to do. And I’ve used that myself sometimes, you get stuck,
or there are one or maybe two things and you can’t decide which way to go. And so you just put
the client on hold for a couple of minutes, and think about it… and…
www.MentorsInHypnosis.com
Eugen Popa: And call a friend… Awesome!
Sean Michael Andrews: And something will come to you. Yeah. Call
your mentor!
Eugen Popa: Exactly. Or just pick up your book and look, what,
what… would I do. Ok, that’s awesome!
So basically, you could just take a pause and just tell the client: “Breath
deeper, go deeper, and then just let your brain roll onto it”.
Sean Michael Andrews: Exactly. And, you know, one more thing that
just occurred to me. One time when I did that, I thought to myself: ”I’ve got
something in my desk drawer, I’ve got some notes in my desk drawer that I
need to get to”, I put the client on hold, but, when I got up to get the notes
out of my desk, the client heard me get up and wondered what the heck I
was doing. Now, unbeknownst to me, she opened her eyes, she came out of
trance and opened her eyes, just to see what I was up to, and then, before I
came back, she closed her eyes and pretended to be in hypnosis.
So, what I’ve learned from that, is, if you have to get up to get
something, a book, or some notes, or something like that, tell the client
what you are going to do, because, if they hear you get up, they might
wonder what’s going on and they might pop out of the trance, so just a little
something else to remember.
www.MentorsInHypnosis.com
Eugen Popa: That’s awesome. So basically, every time you do
something, tell them what you are going to do, so they won’t get startled or
anything.
Sean Michael Andrews: Exactly, exactly, because, as we know, very
few of our clients have ever been hypnotized, before they came to see us, so
they don’t know what to expect, so, so , they say don’t take them by
surprise, tell them what you are gonna do, before you do it.
Eugen Popa: Now, when you say “resistance from the clients”, what is
a resistant client? Or a difficult client, because you know, people go “I have
a difficult client”. What is that? What is a difficult or a resistant client?
Sean Michael Andrews: I think that most of the difficult clients I’ve
had have been children and teenagers, which is funny, because they are
often the easiest clients. However, they are the ones that get brought in to
see you, not under their own power, right?
So, if you have a child who doesn’t really see the benefit in studying,
you know, “this takes away from my TV and internet time”, well, then, I
think a metaphor will be the perfect thing to use in a situation like that, and
…
But it’s pretty rare that you get somebody who is honestly a difficult
client…
www.MentorsInHypnosis.com
Eugen Popa: I mean, I’m sure that you had a situation when a client
came to you and he said: “I have a really big issue, I really want to solve
this issue”, and you start doing your eriksonian induction, or you’re doing
the Elman induction, do the fast induction, and it seems like nothing works,
but he really, really wants to solve that issue, so you know, you would
normally call that a difficult or resistant client, so what do you do in that
situation, when, no matter what you do, this person would just not go into
hypnosis?
Sean Michael Andrews: Oh, won’t go into hypnosis? I think that
hypnotists, experienced hypnotists, should very rarely, rarely see that
happen. I don’t remember the last time someone came into my office and
didn’t get hypnotized.
Now, if the Elman induction, when you perfect it, and that’s just through
lots and lots of practice, should be an almost bulletproof induction….
However, if the Elman induction, for same reason, didn’t work, maybe the
client is scared, maybe they’re… maybe… it’s usually fear. Then you can
go seamlessly into something like the hand drop induction. You just tell
them… they won’t loose their numbers, they won’t display the amnesia, so
you say: “That’s fine, stop counting, you’re doing great. Open your eyes,
put your hand on my hand, rest down on my hand, close your eyes, sleep”,
and then they’re off to hypno land.
www.MentorsInHypnosis.com
So, I don’t often see a client that’s resistant to getting hypnotized, but
what I have encountered in the past is: You do your first session, maybe
your second session, and they are not making the change. Well then, then
we have to do some hypno analysis, and we need to find out what is it, is it
secondary gain, is there’s something that they are getting out of this that’s
causing them not to make the change? Are they truly not motivated to make
this change or is there a different way that they need to look at this in order
to make the change.
So, that’s what I would do.
But backing up a little bit, the reason why is so rare that I fail to
hypnotize people I think it’s based on two things, maybe three:
1. Just really making the Elman induction bulletproof through lots of
practice
2. I think I have a killer pre talk, I have a really really good pre-talk,
3. As soon as I make my first encounter with them, I am building
rapport, I am just NLP-ing their pants-off of them, by the time we get into
the induction, it’s like we are old friends, they’ll do anything for me, they’ll
just follow the instructions perfectly
So I think these are the three reasons why I don’t get people resistant to
going into trance.
www.MentorsInHypnosis.com
Eugen Popa: So would you say that this is yourrecipe fora good
hypnosis session?
Sean Michael Andrews: Definitely my recipe for getting somebody
into hypnosis. You know, when you’re doing the therapy, that’s really art.
You know, comes into it, and there are so many different techniques to use.
We’ll use NLP, we’ll use regression, we’ll use just direct suggestion, or
we’ll use metaphor, or we can use… I mean we can use Gestalt therapy,
there just so many different things that we can do.
So, I don’t really have a recipe for the therapy, because it’s different
almost every time, and that’s what can sometimes make it a challenge to
teach it, because as we progress in our hypnosis careers, we get all this
different tools.
I’m sure that you have things that you’ve learned that you only use once
or twice a year.
www.MentorsInHypnosis.com
Eugen Popa: Do you have a formula to set up yourhypnosis
sessions so you could get the best out of it?
Sean Michael Andrews: Yes, you know… the client comes in, you do
the intake, you find out exactly what their issue is, and the whole time,
rapport building, so they think you are their best friend ever, so they’ll
cooperate, and then, the pre-talk, which… My pre-brief, I think it’s really
good, I got it from a lot of different hypnotists, a lot of different teachers, and
I boiled it down to: it only takes one minute, I’ll give you my pre-talk… one
minute…
There are three common misconceptions about hypnosis:
The first one is that there’s a loss of control. There’s no loss of control in hypnosis. You’d
never do anything in hypnosis which you wouldn’t normally do, you’d never do something against
you moral, religious or personal values, or just something you thought was silly.
So, when you are deep in hypnosis, if I were to say to you: “Would you stand on your head,
you’d say “No” I don’t wanna do that, you wouldn’t be compelled.
The second common misconception about hypnosis is that people tell secrets in hypnosis, and
that’s not true either. If you have a secret to keep in your normal waking state, you will keep it in
hypnosis; you are not going to give me the PIN for your ATM card.
And the third common misconception about hypnosis is that people can get stuck in hypnosis.
And that’s impossible. In 4000 years of people being hypnotized, nobody ever got stuck. However,
when you’re deep in hypnosis , if you’re so good, we’ll you wish you get stuck, but you can’t “.

And I’ve used that myself sometimes, you get stuck, or there are one or maybe two things and you can’t decide which way to go. And so you just put the client on hold for a couple of minutes, and think about it… and…
  • 5. www.MentorsInHypnosis.com Eugen Popa: And call a friend… Awesome! Sean Michael Andrews: And something will come to you. Yeah. Call your mentor! Eugen Popa: Exactly. Or just pick up your book and look, what, what… would I do. Ok, that’s awesome! So basically, you could just take a pause and just tell the client: “Breath deeper, go deeper, and then just let your brain roll onto it”. Sean Michael Andrews: Exactly. And, you know, one more thing that just occurred to me. One time when I did that, I thought to myself: ”I’ve got something in my desk drawer, I’ve got some notes in my desk drawer that I need to get to”, I put the client on hold, but, when I got up to get the notes out of my desk, the client heard me get up and wondered what the heck I was doing. Now, unbeknownst to me, she opened her eyes, she came out of trance and opened her eyes, just to see what I was up to, and then, before I came back, she closed her eyes and pretended to be in hypnosis. So, what I’ve learned from that, is, if you have to get up to get something, a book, or some notes, or something like that, tell the client what you are going to do, because, if they hear you get up, they might wonder what’s going on and they might pop out of the trance, so just a little something else to remember.
  • 6. www.MentorsInHypnosis.com Eugen Popa: That’s awesome. So basically, every time you do something, tell them what you are going to do, so they won’t get startled or anything. Sean Michael Andrews: Exactly, exactly, because, as we know, very few of our clients have ever been hypnotized, before they came to see us, so they don’t know what to expect, so, so , they say don’t take them by surprise, tell them what you are gonna do, before you do it. Eugen Popa: Now, when you say “resistance from the clients”, what is a resistant client? Or a difficult client, because you know, people go “I have a difficult client”. What is that? What is a difficult or a resistant client? Sean Michael Andrews: I think that most of the difficult clients I’ve had have been children and teenagers, which is funny, because they are often the easiest clients. However, they are the ones that get brought in to see you, not under their own power, right? So, if you have a child who doesn’t really see the benefit in studying, you know, “this takes away from my TV and internet time”, well, then, I think a metaphor will be the perfect thing to use in a situation like that, and … But it’s pretty rare that you get somebody who is honestly a difficult client…
  • 7. www.MentorsInHypnosis.com Eugen Popa: I mean, I’m sure that you had a situation when a client came to you and he said: “I have a really big issue, I really want to solve this issue”, and you start doing your eriksonian induction, or you’re doing the Elman induction, do the fast induction, and it seems like nothing works, but he really, really wants to solve that issue, so you know, you would normally call that a difficult or resistant client, so what do you do in that situation, when, no matter what you do, this person would just not go into hypnosis? Sean Michael Andrews: Oh, won’t go into hypnosis? I think that hypnotists, experienced hypnotists, should very rarely, rarely see that happen. I don’t remember the last time someone came into my office and didn’t get hypnotized. Now, if the Elman induction, when you perfect it, and that’s just through lots and lots of practice, should be an almost bulletproof induction…. However, if the Elman induction, for same reason, didn’t work, maybe the client is scared, maybe they’re… maybe… it’s usually fear. Then you can go seamlessly into something like the hand drop induction. You just tell them… they won’t loose their numbers, they won’t display the amnesia, so you say: “That’s fine, stop counting, you’re doing great. Open your eyes, put your hand on my hand, rest down on my hand, close your eyes, sleep”, and then they’re off to hypno land.
  • 8. www.MentorsInHypnosis.com So, I don’t often see a client that’s resistant to getting hypnotized, but what I have encountered in the past is: You do your first session, maybe your second session, and they are not making the change. Well then, then we have to do some hypno analysis, and we need to find out what is it, is it secondary gain, is there’s something that they are getting out of this that’s causing them not to make the change? Are they truly not motivated to make this change or is there a different way that they need to look at this in order to make the change. So, that’s what I would do. But backing up a little bit, the reason why is so rare that I fail to hypnotize people I think it’s based on two things, maybe three: 1. Just really making the Elman induction bulletproof through lots of practice 2. I think I have a killer pre talk, I have a really really good pre-talk, 3. As soon as I make my first encounter with them, I am building rapport, I am just NLP-ing their pants-off of them, by the time we get into the induction, it’s like we are old friends, they’ll do anything for me, they’ll just follow the instructions perfectly So I think these are the three reasons why I don’t get people resistant to going into trance.
  • 9. www.MentorsInHypnosis.com Eugen Popa: So would you say that this is yourrecipe fora good hypnosis session? Sean Michael Andrews: Definitely my recipe for getting somebody into hypnosis. You know, when you’re doing the therapy, that’s really art. You know, comes into it, and there are so many different techniques to use. We’ll use NLP, we’ll use regression, we’ll use just direct suggestion, or we’ll use metaphor, or we can use… I mean we can use Gestalt therapy, there just so many different things that we can do. So, I don’t really have a recipe for the therapy, because it’s different almost every time, and that’s what can sometimes make it a challenge to teach it, because as we progress in our hypnosis careers, we get all this different tools. I’m sure that you have things that you’ve learned that you only use once or twice a year.
  • 10. www.MentorsInHypnosis.com Eugen Popa: Do you have a formula to set up yourhypnosis sessions so you could get the best out of it? Sean Michael Andrews: Yes, you know… the client comes in, you do the intake, you find out exactly what their issue is, and the whole time, rapport building, so they think you are their best friend ever, so they’ll cooperate, and then, the pre-talk, which… My pre-brief, I think it’s really good, I got it from a lot of different hypnotists, a lot of different teachers, and I boiled it down to: it only takes one minute, I’ll give you my pre-talk… one minute… There are three common misconceptions about hypnosis: The first one is that there’s a loss of control. There’s no loss of control in hypnosis. You’d never do anything in hypnosis which you wouldn’t normally do, you’d never do something against you moral, religious or personal values, or just something you thought was silly. So, when you are deep in hypnosis, if I were to say to you: “Would you stand on your head, you’d say “No” I don’t wanna do that, you wouldn’t be compelled. The second common misconception about hypnosis is that people tell secrets in hypnosis, and that’s not true either. If you have a secret to keep in your normal waking state, you will keep it in hypnosis; you are not going to give me the PIN for your ATM card. And the third common misconception about hypnosis is that people can get stuck in hypnosis. And that’s impossible. In 4000 years of people being hypnotized, nobody ever got stuck. However, when you’re deep in hypnosis , if you’re so good, we’ll you wish you get stuck, but you can’t “.
