Year 7 homework:
Create a portrait of someone from ‘life’.
Show that you have used the rules of proportion
and tone to create a realistic drawing.

Level 4:

Level 5:

Level 6:

Full use of the page.
Good shading that
shows contrast
between light and
dark areas (shadows)
Good proportions i.e.
features
(eyes, ears, etc..) are
in the correct
position.

Not only is there a
good use of
proportion but there
is a good likeness and
character (Ask a
relative/friend to see
if they recognise who
the drawing is of)

Good proportion, a
good likeness and a
range of tones.
Different textures
(skin, hair etc) are
shown through
different marks.

Plan your drawing first- Here is a recap of how to plan your
proportions:
•First off, start by drawing an oval or egg-shape.
•Draw a straight line across, at about half way down the face, to indicate
where the eyes will be. Divide this line into five.
•Draw a line about half way between the eye line and the bottom of the
chin - this will be the bottom of the nose.
•Draw a line about half way between the nose line and the chin - this
indicates the placement of the mouth.
•Draw a line halfway between the eyeline and top of the oval. This is a
good guide for the hairline.
•Draw a line right down the center of the head, top to bottom. This is
used to make sure the face is drawn symmetrically, and not lopsided.
•The centre of the eyes usually line up with the outside of the mouth.
