Introduction
The purpose of thisInformationResource Kioskistoprovide queerorLGBTQQIA youthand
youngadultswithinformationand resourcespertainingtotheirlegal rights,theirhealthcare needs,and
theirneedsforsocial servicesorsocial support.Queeryouthare averymarginalizedpopulationinour
society,especiallythose whoare still legalminorswhohave lefthome due to abuse orbeenejected
fromtheirhomesdue to theirsexual orientationsorgenderexpression.Upto40% of homelessyouth
are queeridentified1
.
For manyqueeryouth,publiclibrariesare the onlyplace inwhichtheycanfindnonjudgmental
informationorresourcesfortheirunique needs.Aninformationresource kioskspecificallytailoredfor
these needswouldbe animmenseamountof helpforthe population.The kioskshouldincludeboth
local and national organizationsandassistance centers,aswellasresources whichare purely
informational.
Scope
Thisinformationresource kioskproposal centersonorganizationsandassistance inthe
Sacramento,Californiaarea. Thiskioskhasresourcesfortopicsincludinghealthcare—general,mental
health,sexual health,andgendertransitioncare;social servicessuchassupportgroups,temporaryor
emergencyshelter,andfoodassistance;andlegal assistance regardingthe rightsandprotectionsthat
LGBTQ people have.The legal assistance organizationsare eitherata state or national level.Most
organizations,however,offerassistance findinglocal legal help.

Queeryouthoftenhave unique healthcare needs,andneed care practitionerswhoare sensitive to
those needsandto queeridentities. Additionally,sexual educationinschoolsmostlydoesnoteducate
people effectivelyonqueeridentities,issues,orsexual healthneeds.

Social services
Beingqueer-identifiedoftenmakesyouthtargetsfordiscriminationandharassmentatschool,from
fellowstudentsandevenfromadults.Additionally,some youthface similarproblemsintheirhome
environment.Harassmentorabuse canleadto youthrunningaway,andqueeryouthare alsokickedout
of theirhomesdue totheirgenderidentityorsexual orientation.Providingahealthyandwelcoming
social space and supportnetworkforqueeryouthisnecessaryforthemtogrow intowell-adjusted
adults.Ona more immediate level,homelessorotherwise vulnerableyouthneedsafe placestostayand
enoughfood,aswell asothernecessitieslikelaundryandtoiletries.

youthcan get referralstoresources,grabsnacks,safe sex kits,andhygiene packs.

Thisprogram isa 24 monthtransitional housingprogramforyouth inthe Sacramentoareawhohave

network,suchas those whohave beenostracizedwithinthe networkfortheirsexual orientationor
genderidentityorpresentation.

CalFresh is California’s government food assistance program. “Households” can apply for the
program, but a single person can be a “household” as long as they buy and prepare their own
meals. The applicant can also be under 18. In order to apply a person has to provide government ID
(state identification card, passport or driver’s license),a social security number, an address, and
proof of income. The county will work with people who do not have a permanent address.

LGBTQ legal rightsandprotections,andalsohave resourcestogetreferralstoLGBTQ friendlylawyers
and otherlegal professionals.Additionally,queeryouthinsome casesmayneedtoknow how to file for
emancipation,orknowtheiroptionsforlegal recourseabouttheirfostercare.
