Mel Feller Discusses Habits of Productive and Successful People by Mel Feller
In my work as a business and executive coach, I have found that nobody wants to procrastinate, no one wants to feel stressed, no one wants to get distracted, and no one certainly wants to live in mediocrity. In other words, I found that virtually everyone wants to be productive, to achieve the goals they have set out to accomplish, to live their dreams, and to achieve outstanding success in life no matter their definition of success.
It is easy to say that you want to live a productive life, to work on productive tasks, and to produce amazing results in life. However, the truth is that the execution of accomplishment is difficult.
However, there is a small group, percentage of people, who are able to do it. They strive to make their days industrious, they get things done, and they are extremely successful. It appears that successful people like Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, Jack Dorsey, Brian Tracy, Tony Robbins, and more, seem to understand how to stay productive regardless of whatever happens.

1. Mel FellerDiscussesHabits ofProductive and Successful People byMel Feller
In mywork as a businessandexecutive coach,Ihave foundthatnobodywantsto procrastinate, noone
wantsto feel stressed, noone wantstoget distracted, andnoone certainlywantsto live inmediocrity.
In otherwords,I foundthatvirtuallyeveryone wantstobe productive, toachievethe goalstheyhave
setout to accomplish, tolive theirdreams, andtoachieve outstandingsuccessinlife nomattertheir
definitionof success.
It iseasyto say that youwant to live aproductive life, toworkonproductive tasks, andto produce
amazingresultsinlife.However,the truthisthatthe executionof accomplishmentisdifficult.
However, there isasmall group, percentage of people, whoare able todo it.Theystrive to make their
daysindustrious,theygetthingsdone,andtheyare extremelysuccessful. Itappearsthat successful
people likeSteve Jobs,RichardBranson,JackDorsey,BrianTracy,Tony Robbins,andmore,seemto
understandhowtostay productive regardlessof whateverhappens.
Therefore,Iamconvincedthatwe shouldlearnfromthese amazingindividuals.We shouldexamine
theirwritings, follow theirsuccessandfindoutwhattheydo that we donot do.
In addition, here are several habitsof these productive peopleandtheirhabitsof whichIfeel we should
espouse.
Make a list
RichardBranson,the billionairewhostartedVirginGroupindicatesthathisbiggestsecrettosuccessisa
to-dolist. Inone of Virgin’sblogpost, Bransonsharedhislistfromhis1972 diary,where he wrote down
the thingsthat he wantedto achieve asa 22-year-oldyoungman.
Here is whathe wrote down:
Learn to fly
Look afterme,you,boat
Entertaineverybodywithme
Invite nice peopleback
Start gettingthe small house togetheratThe Manor
2. Start buyingoddsandsods forThe Manor
Work withme on projects/sortme out
More shopsto be found
As we all know,Bransonhasbecome a supersuccessful entrepreneurrunning multiplebusinesses
aroundthe world. Moreover,he hasdedicatedahuge percentage of hissuccesstohishabitof writing
listsona dailybasis.
“I’ve oftenwrittenaboutmylove of writinglists –and thisone showsI’ve beenatitsince the very
beginning.Listsnotonlyprovidegreatstructure forgettingthingsdone,buttheyalsohelpustoset
goalsand achieve ourdreams.”
Sir RichardBransonis preciselycorrect.Youcan have a listforalmostanything.Youcan create a listof
all the thingsthat youwant to achieve inyourlife.Youcanalsocreate a listof to-dosinyour demanding
day. However, whateveryouputdownintopaper, youmake itmore tangible andyouare telling
yourself thatitisimportant,andthat is whyyouwrite itdown.
Thus, make thisyour productive habit.Youcan use yourphone to recordeverythingordoit the
Branson-way,write downeverythingon anotepador businessjournal andcarryiteverywhere yougo.
Make Lists:
You can make listsforalmosteverything:
Create a listof all the thingsthatyou wantto achieve inlife.Inotherwords, putall yourgoalsintoa
bucketlist.Write themdown andinclude adeadline.
Create a dailyto-dolist.If youwantto be productive,youmustidentifythe tasksthatyouneedto
complete eachday. Thus, create your dailyto-dolistsothatyou will notforgetthe thingsthatmustbe
done.
Planand prepare yourday, week, month, andyear.Planyourday the nightbefore. Infact if youcan
planyour goalsoutfrom a five yearperspectivegoingtoa dailylistof goals. Itis hard butit can be
done.
3. Reflecton life
In commencementspeechatthe Stanford University,the manwhostartedApple,SteveJobs,toldthe
studentsthere thathe askedhimself asimple butpowerfulquestiontoreflectonhislife eachday.
Thiswas whathe said: “WhenI was 17, I reada quote thatwentsomethinglike:“If youlive eachdayas
if it wasyour last, somedayyou’ll mostcertainlybe right.”Itmade an impressiononme, andsince then,
for the past 33 years,I have lookedinthe mirroreverymorningandaskedmyself:“If todaywere the last
day of my life, wouldIwant todo whatI am about to do today?”Andwheneverthe answerhasbeen
“No” fortoo many daysina row,I knowI needtochange something.”
We have to askthe question, howcanyoutell if whatyoudo eachday ismovingyouforwardor
backwards,if youdo not reflectorreview yourresultseachday? The bestexample Icangive is the only
wayto knowif youhave lostsome weightsistostandon the scale and measure yourweightdaily.
Moreover,thissame principle appliesinourlife.If youwanttobe productive,youmustreview and
reflectonyourlife. Like whatJobsdid,he askedhimselfthatone questioneachmorningsothathe
knewif he was movinginthe rightdirectionornot. I feel thattoomanyof us take life forgrantedand
do notreflecton what we do eachday.
I love whatRobinSharmasays: “Don’t live the same year75 timesand call ita life.”
Therefore,if youwanttomove forward,thenproduce the rightresults,andmake progressinreaching
your goals,byreviewingandreflectingon yourlife.
Alwaysdoa self-checkinordertounderstandyourprogress.Inaddition,if youare notmovingforward,
youwill quicklyknowthatsomethingisnotaccurate and you mustmake a change.
Reviewand Reflecton Life:
Reviewyourgoalsona dailyor weeklybasis. Iwouldsuggestdaily. Donot waitto doa review onlyby
year-endbecause bythen, itwill be toolate. Nochange of course can be implemented.
4. Reflectonyourlife ona regularbasis.Take some time tothinkabout the future thatyou want, and ask
yourself if whatyoudoeach day is actually movingyouforward.
Wake up earlierthanothers do.
One of the mostcommonhabitsof productive people iswakingupearly andstartingthe daywithout
interruptions.
“Early to bedand earlytorise makesa man healthy, wealthy, andwise.” – BenjaminFranklin
Thisarticle from BusinessInsidersharesalistof 21 successful people whowake upincrediblyearly.
Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple wakesupas earlyas3:45AM each morning, doesemail foranhour, stealing
a march on those lazyEast Coastersthree time zonesaheadof him, thengoestothe gym, then
Starbucks(formore e-mail),thenwork.
PepsiCoCEO,IndraNooyi isinthe office by7AM everyworkday. Inaddition,she tellsFortune that“they
say sleepisagiftthat God givesyou… that’s one giftI wasnevergiven.”
Jack Dorsey,TwitterCEOwakesuparound 5:30AM to meditate andjogfor 6 mileseachday.
KevinO’Leary, the SharkTankinvestorsaysthathe wakesupat 5:45AM and checksthe Europeanand
Asianmarketseveryday.
RichardBranson wakesupat about 5:45AM each day inhisprivate islandtoo. He usesthose earlyhours
to exercise,buildrelationshipswithhisfamily,andgeta goodbreakfastbefore he getstowork.
The bottom line isthatwaking upearlycan make you become more productive becauseyougeta head
start at a time whenmostpeople are still sleeping.
Wake Up Early Tips:
If you wantto wake up early, thengoto bedearly. Most people donotgo to sleepearlyandthisiswhy
they do nothave the energythe nextday.
5. In goingto bedearlyandwakingupearly,I wouldsuggestthatyoudo itgradually.Youdo not have to
wake up at 5AM tomorrowif youhave beenused togettingupat 7AM everyday. You can change your
lifestyle,notdrastically,butgradually.Trytowake up 15 or 30 minutesearlierthanusual,maintainit,
and then increase thatovera period.
Focus on the most important
Productive people are productive because theyfocusongettingthe mostimportanttasksdone first, not
justany task. Moreover, youshould emulate doingthe same thing. Prioritize yourto-dolist.Do notjust
workon the listaccordingto what youhave writtendown, instead, prioritize the tasksaccordingtotheir
importance and complete the mostresult-yieldingtask.
Tim Ferris,the best-sellingauthorof The 4-Hour Workweeksaysitwisely: “If youdon’thave time,the
truth is,youdon’thave priorities.Thinkharder,don’tworkharder.”
In otherwords, not all tasks are equal.Youmustfocuson gettingthe workthat getsyouthe most
resultsif youtruly wantto be productive. Remember, beingbusy doesnotmeanthatyouare being
productive. Thisiswhyyoushouldfollow the Pareto’s80/20 Principle.Spendyourtime workingonthe
20% tasksthat give you80% workand notthe otherwayround.
Mel FellerTip: Howdo you deal withall yourtasksand to-dos?A good approachis to use the
EisenhowerMatrix. Youlisteverythingthatyou mustcomplete, andthenyou place the tasksintothe
EisenhowerMatrix toidentifytheirimportance.
Focus on the High-ImpactWork:
Alwaysprioritize.Choosetoworkontasks that give youthe mostimpact.Follow the Pareto’sRule to
make yourself productiveandeffective.
Eliminate distractionandsayno ina nice way to rejectthingsorpeople thatare not movingyou
forward. We onlyhave 24 hours a day andwe cannotspendour time onwhatever andwhomever
comesto us.Thus, we mustbe selective.
6. We all wantto live a full, happyandsatisfiedlife?Forsome of us,itneednotbe a longlife aslongas it
has beenafulfillinglife of accomplishments, happinessandnoremorse. However, how manyof us
actuallygo onto experience thatindividually?Itsometimessoundsmore like apipe dream afantasy
rather thancertainty. However,if youwill followthese tipsandhabits, theywill propel youforward.
