3. McKenney’s implemented a design/build approach to upgrade the HVAC
and plumbing systems at the training barracks of a Georgia military
installation.
4. The Challenge
To stay within the original design/build budget and complete the
renovation project on time, the McKenney’s needed to address a myriad
of obstacles including mechanical chase limitations, serviceability and
scheduling.
The Solution
To overcome installation constraints, a modular rack system for the HVAC
and plumbing components was developed by McKenney’s and built at
their fabrication facility. Six trades, including sheet
metal, piping, plumbing, electrical, controls and insulation were involved
in the fabrication. This design increased serviceability by providing
maintenance access to all critical parts. It also reduced costs by
minimizing field install time.

5. The Results
Use of the rack system, cost-effective prefabrication methods and
completing the project on time and on budget made the project an
overall success. The government was so pleased with the rack system it
was included as a requirement in the next Request for Proposals (RFP)
issued for similar work.
