This is a 10-point plan to get your started on Twitter.
If you have an account and don't know what to do with Twitter, then this PDF is the right one for you too. If you have any questions, I'm only a Tweet away!! @maykingtea
2. #MAYKINGITHAPPEN#MAYKINGITHAPPEN #MAYKINGTEA
Hi! My name is May King Tsang. My first name is
May King and my Twitter name is @maykingtea :D
I started my business in 3 different cities using the
power of Social Media and it was through Twitter that
I made many breakthroughs in my business.
Many tea businesses started asking me 'How did you
do this?', 'How did you do that?' and I realised that
the TEAcher inside of me wanted to help not only tea
businesses but any business that wanted to get a real
understanding of Twitter, and this is why I have
written this quick guide to get you started.
Would you like to get to know Twitter a little better?
Well pop the kettle on, make a cup of tea and let me
show you how!
3. 1. Twitter Name
Your Twitter name is a representation of you.
Ideally this could be:
* your name
* your business name
* a combination of both
* your name and the role you play e.g. JohnThePainter
If you have a common name, consider:
* TheJohnSmith
* JohnSmithReal (or RealJohnSmith)
Twitter may suggest numbers at the end of your name.
Avoid these suggestions if you can (unless you can be no.1).
According to LifeHack.org we have 7 seconds to make a
good first impression, so let's make them memorable.
Let's make them count count.
4. 2. Cover Photo / Cover Page
With your Cover Photo (the circle on the left),
ensure you have an up to date photograph of
yourself or use your logo to represent you. This
all helps to make a good first impression.
Think of your Cover Page as your bill board. It's
an opportuniTEA to show people what you do, in
the form of an action shot, or an opportuniTEA for
you to tell your followers what you do, or even
how people can contact you.
Consider using Canva.com or another app or
website to write some text on top of your cover
page to let people know how they can contact
you, or describe what you do on the
Cover Page, like this local business.

5. 3. Twitter Bio
You have 160 characters to make another good
impression. It helps people to understand who you
are and what you do. Don't be afraid to show that
you're human too. For example I declare my love for
#teapuns to inject a bit personaliTEA into my bio.
Other items you may wish to include:
* what you do
* how you help others
* hobbies
* family / pets
* likes and loves
* hashtags
* location
* link to your website.
6. 4. Follow People
Make it a regular habit to follow people.
Who should you follow?
* People you admire
* People from your industry
* Industry Organisations
* Groups you are a member of
* Complimentary industries
* Follow me if you like! @maykingtea
Keep the ratio between followers and following
a very similar ratio (unless you are a huge
celebriTEA :D ).
Not sure who to follow? Search on #hashtags to
find people to follow e.g. search your geographical
location to find localised people to follow.
7. 5. Create Lists
As you start to follow more people, when you click on
the Home button on Twitter, you will be inundated with
lots of conversations. Twitter can soon turn into a
noisy place.
Lists are a great way of cutting out the noise in your
newsfeed and look at the conversations from people
that are important to you. Create a List or subscribe
to a list that someone else has already created.
Did you know?
You can follow your competitors and they won't know?
Create a Twitter List and make it private :) Take a look
at tweets they post ; when they post and which posts
generate the most engagement.
Be inspired by their tweets but don’t
copy them - just tweet better :)
8. 6. Like, Retweet and Don't be a lurker
If you read a tweet and enjoyed it, then Like it! If you are
happy to associate your brand with something you have
just read and enjoyed, click on the Retweet button.
If you want to stand out from the crowd, you may want to
add a comment on the tweet, so ‘Quote Tweet’ and add
your 2 pennies worth on top of the tweet and get into the
conversation with somebody. This helps people to get to
know you if you start engaging.
Don't be a lurker: When we read something that’s
useful how often do we express graTEAtude to the
creator? If we lurk, people won’t know who we are.
Consumers need to see our brand at least many times
before they make the decision to engage with you. http://bit.ly/DontBeALurker
If you lurk, people won’t see your name, your brand and they won't buy from you
(yet). Get into the conversation, and start getting your brand known.
9. 7. Get into the Conversation
Get into the conversation with somebody, like you would at a
networking event. Say hello, ask people how their work has
been, engage in small talk to start. If people don’t respond,
don’t be offended. It might be that they haven’t seen your
tweet yet, but do try and talk to several people if you can.
Don't be afraid to show your personaliTEA :)
Remember: on Twitter you're not just talking to that one
person. You are potentially talking to their followers. Many
people could be listening to your conversation!
65% of my work has come through Twitter. Not because I have actively sought out the work, but
because I have been getting into the conversation. People have discovered my tweets; they Googled
me, liked that they saw and then approached me with some work via a Direct Message (see point 10).
Since returning to the UK, I have appeared on TV, Radio, Magazines and Podcasts and hired
by large brands and boutique businesses to them with their Social Media StraTEAgy. All
through the power of conversation, the power of building relationships and all on Twitter!
10. 8. Share Great Content
If you have a blog, summarise your blog posts in a
tweet. Summarising blog posts in 280 characters
makes it easier for people to digest your content.
Maybe try writing your blog directly in Twitter without
linking to a blog post, using the 'Add Tweet'
functionality (great tip @andrewandpete).
Consider going one step further by creating video tips
to give that extra level of connection with your followers.
(By 2020, 75% of mobile traffic will be video ~ Cisco)
Be the expert in your field. Demonstrate that by sharing articles in your industry. Comment on other
articles - be the expert like the ones you find on the Red Couch on the BBC News, but on Twitter :D
Not sure where to get good content? Place keywords from your industry in Google Alerts and have
Google email articles to you. www.answerthepublic.com is another great place for inspiration.
(Thanks for this great tip @emma_molloy).
Business owners: see yourselves as a brand. Consumers buy from brands they know,
like and trust. Be that brand, be known, be likeable, be trustworthy and share great content.
11. 9. Twitter Chats
Get involved in Twitter Chats in order to get known.
Build relationships and get into the conversation.
One of my friends, @_successmatters created a list
of some Twitter Chats. Note: the list is by no means
exhaustive: http://bit.ly/TwitterChatsSM
What is a Twitter Chat?
A Twitter chat is a public Twitter conversation around
one hashtag. This hashtag allows you to follow the
discussion and participate.
Twitter chats are usually recurring and on specific topics to regularly connect people with these
interests. It's a great way to build your brand and build relationships with other people.
Imagine going into a networking event. You can’t possibly get to talk to everybody. However, on a
Twitter Chat, you can search on their hashtag and catch up with those you want to catch up with.
How cool izzat?!? So find a Twitter Chat and get involved in the conversation on a regular
basis. You never know who finds you and who clicks on your bio. Remember, when
you're talking to one person, you're potentially talking to their followers too!!
12. 10. Direct Messages
Invite potential prospects to turn a public conversation into a private conversation in order to
strengthen your relationship with them. Whilst public tweets are 280 characters in length, Direct
Messages are 10,000 characters, paving the way for deeper meaningful conversations.
Received a customer complaint? Apologise publicly,
and resolve the complaint with Direct Messages.
Direct Messages can also be used to connect with
Influencers in your industry. Influencer Marketing is
where individuals have influence over potential buyers,
Connecting with an Influencer and offering them gifts or
a financial arrangement in return for endorsing your
product / service is a straTEAgy that is in.
You can also send a Direct Message to someone who is
not following you. To receive messages from anybody,
set your Account settings to “Receive Direct Messages
from anyone". Messages received from those that are
not following you can be seen in the Requests Section.
13. And That's a Wrap!!
