2. The Irishman
• For my media campaign unit I'm going to be doing about the film the Irishman its
being directed by Martin Scorsese and its very hyped currently and will release on
November 27th on Netflix it was released in the cinema on November 8th.
• The Irishman is an epic crime film its directed by Martin Scorsese and its being
disrupted by Netflix, Its budget is over 150 million USD it went over budget several
times and got delayed once it was supposed to be financed by a Mexican film
company called Fabrica de Cine they offered 100 million but dropped when told the
film would cost more to make, After this Netflix picked it up and offered to put 125
million for the film.
• Its main stars consists of Robert De Niro Al Pacino Joe Pesci and Ray Romano these
are know as huge movie stars and some of the biggest stars in Hollywood history.
• It was given an 15 age rating by the motion picture content rating system. Its target
audience is mainly for Scorsese fans or fans of the gangster genre
• The purpose of campaign is to raise awareness and inform potential viewers of the
films purpose and to entertain them as well as to help make the film some money
3. How it was marketed
• The Irishman was marketed in the regular ways other films are given teasers.
Netflix released its teaser back in July 31st of this year and it was met with
positive feedback it was also given a theatrical trailer that debuted on
September 25th this was released with positive feedback and extreme hype.
• A twitter page was also created for the film where they posted pictures of the
film during production and after production as well as Facebook and Instagram
also got their Irishman pages generating more hype it was also given sections
out of movie magazines to help promote it and get more people to watch the film
empire a film reviewing company left it with a 5 star and many other film
reviewing companies give it positive ratings as well.
• The Irishman was given posters to help market the film and these are available
to buy online this overall is generating more fan base and money for the film.
• The final trailer was released for the Irishman on Wednesday the 20th of
November a week before the release date and it was packed with exciting
moments in the film and had reviews giving it great feedback and marketing it
more getting better sales and viewers.
4. Target audience
• The target audience for the Irishman is aimed at people who are fans of the
crime/gangster genre and people who are fans of Scorsese's films and the
actors that are in the Irishman this could range from young men and women
to older people who have grown up with Scorsese. I know that its meant for
this audience because the film is rated 15 and its not made for a younger
audience they used social media marketing to help promote the film for one
of the types of marketing this solidifying the fact that its meant for teens to
older people as children are less likely to be on a social media platform
5. The genre
• The Irishman is in the crime and drama film this is typical from Martin
Scorsese as he is typically know as a gangster/crime director and his films
have gone into history as classics and will be always remembered he has
done classics in this genre like goodfellas and taxi driver as well as casino
these films are some of the best crime films all directed by Scorsese. It also
includes some of the cast of the Irishman like Robert De Niro
6. Box office
• The film has received a good opening day it has raised nearly 5 million
worldwide it will raise much more in its time though it could raise 100
million+ and become a huge film this year the Irishman had an incredible
first week on views in the 1st 5 days it had been watched by 17.1 million
people in the us alone and in 7 days a staggering 26 million views in the us
this had a massive increase in the coming weeks going above 40 million in
the rest of the world it had a massive climb generating 10 million views on
average within the 1st week. The BFI placed it in the top 3 best films of the
year and its already in the running's for a film of the year. award which it
has received many many nominations.
7. Where it could be viewed
• The Irishman had a small showing on selected cinemas from 3 weeks
ranging from the 1st of November to the 27th where it debuted on Netflix
8. Poster analysis
Here they have used serif font this is to give it a
unique identity and to show the audience this is
clearly the Irishman film and it stands out to
everything else in the film serif font is mostly
used in titles anyway to attract the viewers eye.
Joes Pesci is right at the front of this poster and he is
very large in the poster this gives the look that Joe
Pesci is the main character and the most important
character they could have done this because Joe Pesci
is predicted as the main boss of the film and Robert
De Niro is the right hand man and Al Pacino needs
assistance from the two.
Martin Scorsese is mentioned twice this
might be to draw in viewers or to hype up
Scorsese fans as he is a very popular director.
They use sans serif font
when describing the cast
as its not as important as
the title and its not
supposed to grab the
viewers eye as much.
The background is out of focus as its not
important to the film it looks like its
been hand drawn which gives the film a
look of professionalism and Accurate
because the film is set in Philadelphia
and the drawings look like a block of
apartments in Philadelphia. The artists
want us to look at the main characters.
Netflix get a mention on the poster as they
were the main funders of the film they put a
huge part of the budget up and it was only
given a brief showing in the cinema then it
was put onto Netflix for people to watch.
The writer and Scorsese get
another huge mention at
the bottom of the poster
this suggests that they are
a huge part of the film
being made and they
deserve the credit they
have been given
9. Awards
• The Irishman has already had massive success considering its only been out
a short period time and is already getting considered for best picture and
Martin Scorsese might be in the running for best director award this is
important to the film as it generates hype and is better for marketing as
more people will want to watch it if its nominated for an award and has high
praise as well as a good director behind the camera it was marketed in film
magazines to get hype to the right level and to help the sell film to a right
audience.
11. Difference between marketing
• With the Irishman it was given many forms of marketing many of these being
posters and trailers it was given teaser trailers which this just gave the audience
and taste of the film by showing important scenes and exploring the characters
more in depth they used social media to hype the film up more and raise
awareness they did this by showing a picture of the film and they show how long
the film has to its releasing date this is making people aware of its release and
generating hype. Due to the internet the Irishman was able to promote globally
using social media this made the film a lot more profitable and it was able to
help be promoted to countries worldwide, other types of marketing were used for
this film however it was also strange as it wasn’t given a trailer on the cinema or
promoted in theaters anyway which is unusual for most films as they have some
sort promotion before they come out however Netflix thought it should have
their marketing plan by advertising after the user has watched a show or movie
on Netflix a short ad will come onto the screen and advertise the film or show
intended this could be seen as good marketing because you are suggesting stuff
for people to watch on Netflix but it could also be better to advertise your film in
the cinema or with posters and billboards around cities like most films tend to do
as this has been very successful in the past.
12. Social Media Analysis The banner for the social
media page generates
more hype as it’s the
poster what most people
are used to seeing at this
point because it was put
up in selected cinemas
and shown all over the
internet promoting the
film. Here you see the
actors when you first
logo onto the sight
Here is the description
this gives brief bit of
information to the film
this is marketing
because it tells us who
the director is who the
cats is it also tell us
that the film is based
off a book called “I
heard you paint
houses”
The profile picture for the
social media is the title from
the poster this is another form
of marketing because its
luring in audiences who are
fans of the poster and people
who are fans of the film the
profile pic also mentions that
the film is being directed by
Martin Scorsese making this
appealing to Scorsese fans.
As you can see the
twitter page for the
Irishman has 21k
followers and it tweeted
many things promoting
the Irishman and giving
information about it
The Irishman has 48k
followers were like on
twitter it promoted the
film and talked a lot about
the film to
Instagram got a similar treatment to
twitter promoting the film telling the
audience who the cast is and where it
can be watched they also included
Netflix in their bio so if people had not
heard of them they can check them to
13. Trailer analysis
Dominant Image the trailer
clearly wants us to know that
the guns are the dominant
image and that it’s a main
part of the film as its shown
for a few seconds its
reinforcing the genre to the
audience.
This excites audiences of the
crime genre as we know we are
going to see some action
typically when weapons are
involved we see action
This can be seen as a convention of the
genre as in gangster films we nearly
always see weapons or a weapons being
used in a scene this gives us a taste of a
gangsters lifestyle.
This trailer links slightly to the poster as we
know Frank Sheeran is a mob assassin this
could be showing off his gun collection this
is exciting to gangster fans as violence in
gangster films is typical thing we see and
enjoy about the genre.
The trailer reminded me more of Martin
Scorsese most popular films as it had certain
elements to them in the trailer than his lesser
known ones like it reminded me a lot of the
departed a similar gangster type pic that
Scorsese directed back in 2004
This element of movie with the guns is crucial to the
movie because when a viewer sees guns/weapons
they expect to see violence or death the trailer its
towards the end were Frank Sheeran the main
character is given a job to kill someone this is
intense to the viewer as we know its an action
packed scene and it builds the character to what we
suspect from him
14. Trailer Analysis 2 This here demands that the film is
being directed by the same director
as the wolf of wall street and
Goodfellas which were critically
acclaimed when they came out and
were highly popular among fans its
gives the impression that this film
could be given a high standard like
his previous works.
15. Trailer Analysis 3
• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHXxVmeGQUc
The Editing in the trailer is very fast paced
between cuts its jumps from bit to bit showing
the important scenes off they also include
drum like noises every time something comes
up to hype the film up or when an important
part comes up on the trailer. This can part of
the trailer can also be referenced to a scene in
Goodfellas where young henry hill sets a bunch
of cars on fire for the mafia this again goes
back to the crime genre that the fans will
recognize and fans of Scorsese will love as its
something we are used to seeing in one of his
best works.
16. Analysis of 3 products
The trailer links to the poster as in the
screenshot it has loads of guns showing this is
reflective to the gangster lifestyle as being a
gangster is typically known as being a violent life
and life heavily related to crime.
The trailer can be compared
with the social media as at
the end of the trailer the
social media has the same
type of font as the trailer and
it has the same style as the
social media.
The social media can be linked to the poster as the poster is
the social medias cover photo and it says in the description
that the Irishman is Scorsese new film on Netflix. There is a
repetition to the font from the poster and the social media
this being easy to recognize the film for the audience
17. Reviews from fans
• The Irishman had a very good reviews from fans gaining an average 9 out of
10 off fans and some people rated it a 10/10 it was very popular with film
critics as well rotten tomatoes gave it a 96% on the tomato meter and it got a
massive 86% with the audience meter IMDB gave it a a 8/10 this is a very
good rating for a film as it show's that people enjoyed it and it’s a critically
acclaimed film

19. How effective was the campaign
• I believe the campaign was very effective as the film has been deemed
successful and has been nominated for best film and Martin Scorsese has
been nominated for best this suggests that the marketing worked if its
popular enough to be highly rated and nominated for awards the campaign
also hyped up a lot of people that couldn't wait to see Scorsese's new films
and the return of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro In the same film who
previously only worked in 1995s heat together. The film was highly enjoyed
by fans and critics a like and has been nominated for many awards I
personally think the way Netflix marketed the film could have been done
better by maybe including trailers on the cinema or a billboard. But I still
think some of the marketing helped it become what it is currently.
