Lets start with Gartner, the bible for us technology consultants. This is their hype cycle for emerging technologies showing the status of technologies predicted for mass market adoption.Green IT is truly hyped today, on top of the curve and we read about it in most reports, magazines, blogs and presentations. According to Gartner the attention will probably lower soon, but it is vital to realize that it is not a fad, but a vital part in sustainable business practice.
And at the same time Green IT is evolving.Initially Green IT was only about IT. Minimizing the environmental impact of IT operations, including systems and hardware. That means for example focus on productivity, lower energy consumption and recycling. Carl-Harald told us earlier that IT represents approximately 2% of global Co2 emissions. Sorry for that, IT will and must be greener.CLICKBut in parallel its not only about sustainable IT. Rather IT is the tool to minimize total environmental impact. IT is the tool for the 100%. This is the exciting part.IT can assist in many areas such as supply chain and logistics (fill the trucks more efficient, chose the closest track, avoid traffic jams, only do right turns), travel (videoconferences and similar collaboration tools are on display in our lounge), smart energy meters and grids (so we don’t have to fuel up coal power plants during consumption peaks) and much more…Green IT is more than green server rooms, IT is the tool for all industries to reduce environmental impact. But it is also the tool for people.
Because IT also change how people work with sustainability and environment
Almost 20 years ago we went out on the streets to promote sustainability and green ideas1988 was for example the year when the Green Party (Miljöpartiet) entered the Swedish governmentFor young people like me this is how the former generation promoted sustainability – my generation is very passionate about sustainability, but we express it in a very different way.
We don't go out to the streets anymore, we express our passion digitally through the tools we have been growing up with.Many parents say “don’t sit in front of your computer, go out and play with your friends”. But this is exactly what we are doing online nowadays as this is where we connect with people to share and promote our thinking, ideas and beliefs.This has also changed the focus. 20 years ago it was about environmental problems in Sweden. Today its more about curbing climate change and environmental threats on a global platform and scale. Young people are today active members in the global challenges.And they are now empowered with tools and methods to take action
Because the new digital platforms offer great possibilities to find other people sharing the same causeWWF Earth Hour earlier this year (promoting people to turn off the lights during one hour) was for example a global campaign, especially driven and organized by digital communication.When was the last time the whole world came together for a common cause and collaborated across borders? The whole world participating.This was a major initiative, but smaller actions and campaigns are happening daily as we speak. Its easier than ever to mobilize people for a cause.
And it is becoming easier than ever as the online world is going social. Internet is no longer about the World Wide Web, which is technology, but we should rather refer to it as The People Web.People love to discuss, collaborate and communicate. And we do this about the subjects that we are passionate about (social object as they tend to be referred to as). And for us the young people it is especially the passion for environment and sustainability that we love to discuss.And the more we communicate and collaborate the more progress is possible.
I have at Tieto been part of a team to develop a concept for an open conversation platform for sustainable energy, how to promote discussions and dialogues around sustainable energy.My own favorite part in the concept is: the word open. Everyone from anywhere on the globe, at all ages and backgrounds is invited to participate.Therefore a favorite part is around open innovation (or co-innovation).I used to live in India and with on average one hour electricity break every day I am very convinced that most innovations around energy (as well as sustainability) will emerge in or focus on the developing countries.Sustainability is a global cause, lets collaborate over continents, pollution has no borders, the end result benefits everyone. And lets therefore invite everyone to participate, share your ideas, maybe we can realize one of them.Digital is a great platform for develop ideas together and to identify solutions for the future.
My second point is that we must not forget what the I in IT stands for; information.It is a lot of talk about physical innovations and products, but I would like to claim that there are much more value is in services and information.
Never before have so much information been available to us, and I promise that I will do my best to increase this by forcing my customers to open up their databases.With information we can understand consequences and make smarter decisions. Emissions from products are the first step towards consumer power.When I book a trip to Barcelona with a Boeing 737 I am told how much emissions this generates, together with the option to offset them. As well as we in the future will have sustainability tags on the products that we purchase, such as this shirt on the right side.A great example of this trend is Hans Rosling that brings up statistics from government agencies and organizations and makes it understandable, possible to analyze and draw conclusions. He recently sold his company Gapminder to Google so I am sure more exciting things will come.And its fun with information
A while ago Virtual Water won the Stockholm Water Prize. They calculated how much water that goes into making the products around us. Information that we didn't know before and now can make decisions on.Why not continue this trend, still there is no Virtual Energy service. How much more energy does a tomato consume compared with a banana?Fun and interesting, but most important is related to the social dimension. This is what we will discuss with our friends when preparing a dinner. We don’t discuss scientific reports, we discuss things that are present in our daily life. The challenge is to infuse sustainability in everything we do.
But don't worry, IT is here to assistI was in USA last month and had the chance to speak to Tim O´Reilly here on the left. He is the person that is credited with first spotting the current Web 2.0 Social Media trend. His latest excitement is around smart data and information. Understanding patterns and information in the data. This is according to him (and me) the next wave on the internet, which will be of fantastic use in combating global challenges in sustainability.An example of this is Google that this spring released their GoogleMeeter, a device that understand patterns in your energy consumption and relates this to the cause. The data can tell when a device start. Exciting.This is where the true value of smart IT emerges and can be put in use to make our lives easier and greener.
But IT is not only for green. I am quite passionate about the inherent potential in other dimensions of sustainability.One example being Social Lending. Myself is approaching my third investment round in entrepreneurs in developing countries. This village to the right is just one of my investments. This type of coordination wouldn’t be possible without the digital tools.
To conclude: IT is the fantastic tool to work with sustainability outside the strict domain of the server room. And the most exciting thing with IT is that we do not have the traditional trade offs. Environment and Economy at the same time, enabled by information technology.For example the example with eInvoicing. Easier for the customer that don't miss the payment, don't have spend time on the boring task to insert OCR numbers, while at the same time we lower consumption of paper and the company saves money. The only thing missing is transparency, why not print on the invoice how much co2 you as a customer are saving when paying this invoice through your online bank, that would make us digital natives further accelerate innovations such as this.
So hopefully I have been able to convey some of the value we see in IT today and its potential for building a sustainable future. Thank you for listening.
