COMPOSTING MACHINE

  1. OLASUPO, MATHEW DAMILARE (MEE/09/6863) THE FEDERAL UNIVERSITYOFTECHNOLOGYAKURE February,2013
  2.  Wastes are substances or objects, which are disposed off or are intended to be disposed off or are required to be disposed off by the provisions of national law (United Nations).  Composting is the biological degradation of organic substrates aerobically or anaerobically under conditions of temperature and moisture suitable for acting micro-organisms to thrive, with a final product stable for storage and application to soil without adverse environmental impact.
  3. AIM:  The aim of the work is to improve on the development of a household kitchen waste composting machine. OBJECTIVES: a. Improving on the existing design towards achieving a simple and effective composting machine that would compost kitchen waste. b. Conduct a performance evaluation of the composting machine.
  4. METHODOLOGY FAN SPEED CALCULATION V = The speed of fan (V) is: V = ∏DN÷60 d = diameter of fan N = speed of motor in the fan BEARING CALCULATIONS W = X. V. Wr +Y. Wa X = Radial load factor Y = Axial load factor Wr = Radial load V = Rotational factor HEATING COIL (Nickel- Chromium) Q = MC (ø2 –ø1 ) M = Mass of heating coil C = Specific heat capacity of air = 1.0035J/Kg K ø2= Final Temperature of heating coil = 70ºC (Ojumu and Opafunso, 2012) ø1=25ºC (Room) MASHER ASSEMBLY W = B/Cosø + T B=axial distance T= tolerance ø=helix angle V = 1/3∏r2 x T 1. In order to improve on the development of the machine, the following parts would be calculated and designed:  Fan Speed  Bearing  Heating Coil  Masher  Chute 2.Performance Evaluation of the machine would also be done.
  5. It is expected that at the end of this project, a machine which will produce manure for agricultural purposes from household kitchen waste would have been completely developed and tested for high efficiency.
