- What do you want out of your marriage. Take a moment and ask yourself, “what is it that you want?” Why are you married to the person you are married to?
- You may have a bunch of idea and answers, and here are some common ones. You may even find some similarities. And these are all good things.
- Conventional marriage advice starts from many of these things and tries to provide techniques to get you there. Because for many couples, what they want isn’t where they are right now.
- And this conventional advice includes some of these right here…compatibility – how are you similar or different, chemistry – what is your level of attraction and how to change it, compromise – how to give and take, communication – how to talk to your spouse, and capability – how to fix your short-comings and meet the needs of your spouse. And there are various flavors of this.
- And much, much more! The marriage counseling industry is a huge, billion-dollar industry, and the advice typically has various shades of these. It’s all good advice. We all believe it is common sense. There are lots of variations of them and many ways to ingest it. Thing is – as much advice there is – why aren’t more marriages at the place couples want to be?
- What if there were two assumptions that were slightly off? What if…where most couples believe they want to go…falls short of where they were designed to go? And what if the techniques designed to get them to that better place, were the wrong set of techniques to begin with? It’s be like having the wrong address. And even if you had the right address, your map is outdated.
- Here’s another way of looking at it. Here’s where most couples think: they want to get to more of the other stuff – stability, intimacy, acceptance, happiness. And they follow the advice designed to try to get them there. And some of it will, in fact, work.
- But what if the reality is, what they want now is much smaller than what their marriage is designed for? And following conventional advice won’t get them to that better place? In fact, they need a whole new set of assumptions to get to that place instead?
- What is conventional advice from friends, family, television and magazines need to be turned upside down? And as a result, you’ll have great joy, peace, intimacy, adventure and meaning than you could’ve imagined? Interested?
