Want to outline where we have come from in terms of book digitisation, where we have got to and where we would like to be
Project in its infancy and has considerable development potential
Credit ideas gained from colleagues at Art Libraries and IFLA Art Section conferences
2nd largest public building in the UK
Threefold increase in visitors over last 15 years when free entry started – 3m plus visitors so not just to do with charging

Grew out of national art schools movement so predates the V&A by about 20 years

Although V&A doesn’t ostensible collect paintings we have more than the National Gallery but mainly 19th century

Dyce – 14k books with theatrical focus plus pictures, prints and drawings
Forster – 18k books including literary and historical material and Dickens
Dickens – all of manuscript novels except two

BL lacks leadership in this area – many exclusive deals with HE but by paid subscription beyond that
80% of galleries re-designed in 15 years so concentration is on high cost initiatives and smaller projects go to the back of the queue to avoid competing with FuturePlan
How does a museum deal with digital material? Kathleen ‘access rather than collection’
In spite of much activity the museum still appears to be challenged by the digital
New entrance and exhibition galleries – approximately £50m project

Appear to be free publications readable on Android and iOS platforms

Amazon share of online book sales in UK 75%+ yet V&A has ‘as little to do with them as possible’ –don’t generally offer search inside the book, table of contents, index etc online
Some publications on Kindle i.e. about 5 out of print 1970s fashion items and Memory Palace, Hari Kunzru but unsupported colour illustrations
Latest catalogue where, surprisingly, EBooks priced @ £6.99, these are from 1950s – very confusing but perhaps testing the market?

Poor quality, Adam Matthew specialized in microform so new to digitization, each item was a pdf which needed opening

Originally used for answering online enquiries – scanning and mailing text quickly and efficiently to high standard with minimum potential damage to original texts

Initially concentrated on 19th c South Kensington Museum Art Handbooks published by V&A – half already digitized through Google Books, Microsoft digitization project
