Interactive Lesson
■ In this lesson, I will teach the parts of speech and also ask you to say the
parts of speech with me.There are times I will ask you to make up
sentences with each part of speech.
■ Are you ready to begin?
Nouns
A noun is a word that expresses a person,
place or thing.
Examples: cat, door, balloon, man, Jack,
chair, computer.
Using nouns: Bill closed the door.
Jack is sitting in a chair.
The computer is on the desk.
“It’s your turn”
Please make up 5 sentences and tell me the
nouns in the sentences.
ADJECTIVESAn adjective modifies a noun or a pronoun by identifying,
describing and quantifying.The adjective usually comes before
the noun or pronoun.
Examples:
many, blue, happy, scary, dry, sad, loud, clean.
Using adjectives
Joanna threw the round ball.
The blue dress fit nicely.
The clean coat was soaked after it rained,
It’s your turn:
Please make up 5 sentences and identify the
adjectives in each sentences.
Adverbs
■ An adverbs modifies a verb, adjective or other adverb. An adverb can tell about time,
■ manner, place or reason.An adverb answers questions such asWhen, how much, where,
when
■ Examples:Very, many, clearly, happily, now, slowly, rather
UsingAdverbs
■ She quickly ran down the street.
■ Happily,Cindy opened her presents.
■ Sadly, Jane got sick today.
■ Her very large jacket loosely fit on her very small body.
It’s your turn:
■ Write 5 sentences with adverbs in them and tell me what the adverbs
are in the sentences.
Pronouns
■ Pronouns are words that can replace nouns or other pronouns.
■ Examples: he, she, him, his, her, they, we, you, them, which, it
Brian is a great guitar play, but he cannot play the piano very well.
Jill wanted candy, she said that she had to have it
Roy andAmy went to the movie; they said they had a great time..
It’s your turn:
■ Write 5 sentences and tell me what the pronouns are in each
sentence.
Verbs
Verbs tell information about the subject of the
sentence.Verbs express actions, events and
states of being in action.
Some examples: running, jumping, singing,
telling, being, to, move and eat to name a few…..
Using verbs – John was feeling ill.
Jack ran to the park.
Anne speaks on the phone
Jill was resting on the couch.
It’s your turn:
Please write and say out loud 5 sentences
using verbs. Identify the verbs in each
sentence.
Prepositions
A preposition is a word that links nouns, pronouns
and phrases to other words in the sentence.The
word or phrases the preposition introduces is
called the object of the preposition.
Examples: among, around, against, along, above,
after, by, beyond, for, from, in, of, nearby, with,
without, and many others.
Using Prepositions: Jan jumped in the lake.
Bob ate a roast beef sandwich at the restaurant.
Conjunctions
Conjunctions are used to link words,
phrases and clauses.
Some examples, but, or, nor, yet, so, for,
Using Conjunctions:
I want a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
She liked the green or yellow colors.
It was 7pm, yet it was still light outside.
Bill did not want coffee, but green tea.
Now, it’s your turn.
Please write and say aloud 5 sentences with
5 conjunctions in them. Identify the
conjunctions.
Interjections:
An interjection is a word that shows emotion
in a sentence.
Examples: Ouch,Well, Oh, No, Hmm, Ah,
Yes, Hey, Om
Yes, that made sense!
Ouch, that hurt!
No, I didn’t know that.
Well, is he coming or not?
Okay, it’s your turn now.
Please make up 5 sentences using
interjections. Please identify the
interjections.
These are the parts of speech. Practice
making sentences with them and the more
you practice, the more that you will know.
