What Utilities Need to Know About Vegetation Management - Interview: Steve Marshall, The Davey Tree Expert Company - Transmission & Distribution Summit
1. Interview with: Steve Marshall,
Executive Vice President of US
Utility Operations, Davey Tree
“Hire the best vegetation management
contractors you can. Support them.
Make sure that they are maintaining a
stable workforce that is constantly
improving in skill set, and is familiar
with your property and the people who
manage your operation,” Steve
Marshall, Executive Vice President of US
Utility Operations, Davey Tree advises.
“Develop partnerships with vegetation
management contractors who value
long-term relationships, as that leads to
greater levels of trust, efficiency and
innovation,” he goes on to say.
Davey Tree is a solution provider at the
marcus evans Transmission
& Distribution Summit 2014, taking
place in Las Vegas, Nevada, November
2-4.
How does Davey respond to
utilities’ severe weather events, and
what has the company done to
improve response?
Davey has an internal group that
specifically manages assignments from
customers who are involved in a severe
weather event. That management team
incorporates officers within our safety
department, expert consultants at the
Davey Resource Group and the specified
operations management team assigned
to each individual event. Davey has
improved utility responses to severe
weather events by developing contin-
gency plans for virtually any kind of
storm event.
How could utilities be pro-active
and plan their response ahead of
any events?
Know your contractors. Have your
contractors performed efficiently and
promptly during past emergency
responses? Have a basic knowledge of
those contractors and how they operate.
Also, be aware of and attend relation-
ship seminars, such as those held by
some utilities in Texas and Florida,
when possible. Such seminars are a
forum for utilities to host vegetation
management contractors and discuss
expectations, safe practices and other
facets of the job during weather events.
How could utilities better manage
their assets? What do they over-
look?
It is important for utilities to have an
active maintenance program, vegetation
management plans and procedures and
a hardware asset protection program.
An up-to-date inventory provides critical
information to ensure an accurate, swift
response.
Why should utilities map the
infrastructure they have?
An infrastructure map is invaluable. One
of the most important aspects of any
storm response is having specific
location information available. Having
that knowledge means the contractors
are prepared when they get to the
scene and arrive at the right place to aid
specifically with the recovery. Lost time
is virtually eradicated when you have a
clear map of the system with detailed
information on each location.
Mapping the system makes it possible
for utilities and their contractors to have
a clearer understanding of what actions
can provide the greatest, fastest result
in restoring power to the customers.
How does your safety program
benefit transmission and distribu-
tion clients?
At Davey, safety is a value. We
emphasize the value of safety in order
to protect our employees, the public and
the private properties of our clients.
Specifically, our basic training modules
for each level illustrate the requirement
that each employee is certified for the
job that they are in and has passed all
the tests for that job before they can
move to another position or advance.
We adhere to the appropriate documen-
tation procedures and conduct periodic
audits for certifications.
In addition to the basic training
program, Davey has a strong critical
violations program through which we
monitor activities in the field. Governing
our entire safety program is Davey’s
personal performance program, which
makes each employee responsible for
not only themselves but their cowork-
ers. Davey goes above and beyond
standard safety expectations, and as a
result we have earned one of the top
safety records in the industry -
something that makes us an asset to
utility vegetation managers who can
expect safe, reliable service.
