#6 The Mosaic Covenant
1. EXODUS 24:17
(NKJV)
17 THE SIGHT OF
THE GLORY OF
THE LORD WAS LIKE
A CONSUMING FIRE
ON THE TOP OF
THE MOUNTAIN IN
THE EYES OF THE
CHILDREN OF
ISRAEL.
5. ⢠GOD JEHOVAH,
The Mighty One of Israel,
⢠And
⢠ISRAEL,
The People of God,
The Family that God created
for Himself.
⢠This covenant was not made
with the Gentile people,
⢠It was not made with the
Church,
⢠But with ISRAEL only.
PARTICIPANTS
OF THE
COVENANT
6. EXODUS 19:3-8 (NIV)
⢠3 Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from
the mountain and said, âThis is what you are to say to the
descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of
Israel: 4 âYou yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I
carried you on eaglesâ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now if
you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations
you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is
mine, 6 you[a] will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy
nation.â These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.â
7. EXODUS 19:3-8 (NIV)
⢠7 So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people
and set before them all the words the LORD had commanded
him to speak. 8 The people all responded together, âWe will do
everything the LORD has said.â So Moses brought their answer
back to the LORD.
8. DEUTERONOMY 4:7-8 (NKJV)
⢠7 âFor what great nation is there that has God[a] so near to it, as
the LORD our God is to us, for whatever reason we may call upon
Him? 8 And what great nation is there that has such statutes and
righteous judgments as are in all this law which I set before you
this day?
9. PSALM 147:19-20 (NKJV)
⢠19 He declares His word to Jacob,
His statutes and His judgments to Israel.
20 He has not dealt thus with any nation;
And as for His judgments, they have not known them.
⢠[a]Praise the LORD!
10. MALACHI 4:4 (NKJV)
⢠4 âRemember the Law of Moses, My servant,
Which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel,
With the statutes and judgments.
11. ⢠The key provision was
The Law of Moses,
Containing 613
commandments .
⢠There were blessings and
curses.
⢠It was signed and sealed by the
Shechinah Glory.
⢠This was a conditional
covenant.
PROVITIONS
OF THE
COVENANT
12. EXODUS 24:1-11 (NKJV)
⢠Israel Affirms the Covenant
⢠24 Now He said to Moses, âCome up to the LORD, you and
Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and
worship from afar. 2 And Moses alone shall come near the LORD,
but they shall not come near; nor shall the people go up with
him.â
13. EXODUS 24:1-11 (NKJV)
⢠3 So Moses came and told the people all the words of
the LORD and all the [a]judgments. And all the people answered
with one voice and said, âAll the words which the LORD has said
we will do.â 4 And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD. And he
rose early in the morning, and built an altar at the foot of the
mountain, and twelve pillars according to the twelve tribes of
Israel. 5 Then he sent young men of the children of Israel, who
offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to
the LORD.
14. EXODUS 24:1-11 (NKJV)
⢠6 And Moses took half the blood and put it in basins, and half
the blood he sprinkled on the altar. 7 Then he took the Book of
the Covenant and read in the hearing of the people. And they
said, âAll that the LORD has said we will do, and be
obedient.â 8 And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the
people, and said, âThis is the blood of the covenant which
the LORD has made with you according to all these words.â
15. EXODUS 24:1-11 (NKJV)
⢠On the Mountain with God
⢠9 Then Moses went up, also Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and
seventy of the elders of Israel, 10 and they saw the God of Israel.
And there was under His feet as it were a paved work
of sapphire stone, and it was like the very[b] heavens
in its clarity. 11 But on the nobles of the children of Israel He did
not [c]lay His hand. So they saw God, and they ate and drank.
16. POINT #1
⢠The totality of the Law
⢠There were 613 commandments, not just 10
⢠365 were negative commandments, forbidden things.
⢠248 positive commandments, things to do.
17. POINT #2
⢠The blessing and Judgement of the Law.
⢠As this was a conditional covenant, there were
⢠Blessings for obedience, and
⢠Judgement for disobedience.
⢠Exodus 15:26
⢠Exodus 19:3-8
18. POINT #3
⢠The addition of the Blood Sacrifice, this was a key element.
⢠Leviticus 17:11 (NKJV) 11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood,
and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for
your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.â
⢠This atonement didnât remove sins, only cover it.
⢠The blood of animals didnât remove the sin in OT.
⢠It provided forgiveness of sin and a restored fellowship with God.
19. POINT #4
⢠Died restriction imposed
⢠Some provisions of the Noahic covenant are changed for the
Jews.
⢠Eatable animals need to meet two conditions:
Cloven hoofed and must chew the cud.
⢠Fish must meet two conditions: have fins and scales.
⢠About fowls, no birds of pray were permitted.
⢠Concerning insects, only a type of locust was allowed.
20. POINT #5
⢠As a wall of separation.
⢠The four unconditional covenants are Jewish covenants, and Godâs
blessings both, spiritual and physical are release through those covenants.
⢠The purpose of the law was to keep gentiles as gentiles, away from the
blessings of the unconditional covenants
⢠That is why gentiles were separated from the commonwealth of Israel and
no partakers of the covenant of promise, this is the Mosaic Covenant.
⢠Gentiles could enjoy the spiritual blessings of the four covenants only if they
become subjects to the law, be circumcised and live as a Jew
21. POINT #6
⢠To reveal sin
⢠Romans 3:19-20. No justification throw the law.
⢠The law was given to provide the knowledge of sin.
⢠Romans 5:20. The law will make clear of the sins committed
⢠The 613 commandments revealed sin.
⢠Romans 77. The law was given, so that sin might be known.
22. POINT #7
⢠The token of the covenant was the Sabbath
⢠Sign between God and Israel
⢠It started with Moses.
⢠The Sabbath was a day of rest, not a day of corporate worship.
⢠There was only a convocation of priest this day to perform the
sacrifices.
⢠The emphasis has to do with staying at home and resting as a family.
⢠It was intended only for Israel and not the church.
⢠It is in force as long as the Mosaic Covenant is in force.
24. THE LAW OF MOSES WAS NOT A MEANS
OF SALVATION.
⢠It was to reveal the holiness of God, and the standard of righteousness that God
demands for a proper relationship.
⢠Leviticus 11:44 New King James Version (NKJV)
⢠44 For I am the LORD your God. You shall therefore consecrate yourselves, and you
shall be holy; for I am holy. Neither shall you defile yourselves with any creeping
thing that creeps on the earth.
25. ⢠To provide the rule of conduct for the Old Testament Saints.
⢠Romans 3:28 (NKJV)
⢠28 Therefore we conclude that a man is [a]justified by faith apart from the deeds of
the law.
⢠It was the center of the spiritual life in OT.
⢠Psalm 119:77 (NKJV)
⢠77 Let Your tender mercies come to me, that I may live;
For Your law is my delight.
26. ⢠To provide occasion for individuals and corporate worship for Israel.
⢠The seven Feast of the Lord are the example
⢠The Spring Feasts: Messiah comes as the Suffering Servant.
Passover â Unleavened Bread â Firsfruits
⢠The Summer Feast: Feast of Weeks, Pentecost
⢠The Fall Feasts: Messiah returns as the conquering King.
⢠Trumpets, Rosh Hashanah; Atonement, Yom Kippur; Tabernacles,
Sukkot - Booths
27. ⢠To keep the Jews a distinct people.
⢠Leviticus 11:44-45 New King James Version (NKJV)
⢠44 For I am the LORD your God. You shall therefore consecrate yourselves, and you
shall be holy; for I am holy. Neither shall you defile yourselves with any creeping
thing that creeps on the earth. 45 For I am the LORD who brings you up out of the
land of Egypt, to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.
⢠Worship habits Eating habits Sexual habits
⢠Clothing habits Even the way how they cut their beards
28. MIDDLE WALL OF PARTITION
EPHESIANS 2:11-16 (NKJV)
⢠11 Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the fleshâwho are called
Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by handsâ
12 that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth
of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and
without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off
have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
⢠14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the
middle wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the
law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself
one new man from the two, thus making peace, 16 and that He might reconcile
them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the
enmity
30. TO MAKE ONE SIN MORE
⢠Romans 4:15 New King James Version (NKJV)
⢠15 because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no
transgression.
⢠Romans 5:20 New King James Version (NKJV)
⢠20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin
abounded, grace abounded much more,
⢠1 Corinthians 15:56 New King James Version (NKJV)
⢠56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.
31. ⢠To show the sinner that there was nothing he could do on his
own to please God; he had no ability to keep the law perfectly
or to attain the righteousness of the law.
⢠Romans 7:14-25
32. TO DRIVE ONE TO SAVING FAITH IN
THE MESSIAH
⢠Romans 8:1-4 New King James Version (NKJV)
⢠Free from Indwelling Sin
⢠8 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ
Jesus, who[a] do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the
Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free
from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do in that it was
weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of
sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the
righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk
according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
34. ⢠The Mosaic Covenant was the basis for the Dispensation of Law.
⢠It was a conditional covenant, and came to an end with the death of
the Messiah.
⢠Romans 10:4 New King James Version (NKJV)
⢠4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who
believes.
⢠The Mosaic Law is no longer in effect
⢠Jeremiah 31:32 New King James Version (NKJV)
⢠32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the
day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of
Egypt, My covenant which they broke, [a]though I was a husband to
them, says the LORD.
35. GALATIANS 3:23-25 (NKJV)
⢠23 But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the
law, [a]kept for the faith which would afterward be
revealed. 24 Therefore the law was our [b]tutor to bring us to
Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has
come, we are no longer under a tutor.
36. ROMANS 8:2 (NKJV)
⢠Free from Indwelling Sin
⢠8 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in
Christ Jesus, who[a] do not walk according to the flesh, but
according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ
Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and
death. 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak
through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the
likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in
the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be
fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but
according to the Spirit.
37. THE PRINCIPLE OF FREEDOM
⢠The believer in the Messiah is free from the Law of Moses. He is
free from keeping any commandment of that system.
⢠On the other hand, he is also free to keep parts of the Law of
Moses if he so desires.
⢠The biblical basis for this freedom to keep the Law can be seen
in the actions of Paul, who was the greatest exponent of
freedom from the Law.
⢠His vow in Acts 18:18 is based on Numbers 6:2, 5, 9, and 18.
⢠His desire to be in Jerusalem for Pentecost in Acts 20:16 is based
on Deuteronomy 16:16.
38. SABBATH HAS BEEN RENDERED
INOPERATIVE
⢠In the Mosaic Covenant the Sabbath was the sign, seal, and
token of the Mosaic Covenant. As long as that covenant was in
effect, the Sabbath law was mandatory.
⢠Since the Law of Moses has been rendered inoperative, then the
Sabbath command no longer applies.
