Introduction
Historical Perspective
In North Americamost of thehydraulic researchon PVCpipes wasdone in the1960sand 1970s.Theseearly testsestablished the
followingflow factorsto be used for PVCpipe hydraulicdesign:
Pressurepipe — Hazen Williams (HW) “C”factor = 150
Nonpressure pipe — Manning’s“n”number = 0.009
Sincefriction-factortestingfor PVCpipe in North Americatook placemore than 50yearsago,theUni-BellPVCPipeAssociation
(PVCPA)decidedto engagein atwo-pronged testprogram:(1)laboratory testingof newpipe and (2)fieldtestingof installed pipe.
PVCPAcontractedwithUtah StateUniversity(USU)to:
Perform hydraulic-flowtestingattheUniversity’sUtah Water ResearchLaboratory(UWRL)

LABORATORY TESTING
Introduction
Laboratory hydraulics testingwasperformed in March 2022at
theUWRLfacility.Thetestswererun on 6- and 12-inchPVC
pipe to determine threecoefficients:
Hazen-Williams “C”
Darcy-Weisbach “f”
Manning’s“n”
Toimprove accuracyof measurements, minimum pipe length
required was200timespipe insidediameter.Actuallengthfor
the6-inchline was111feet (222timesID)and for the12-inch
line was220feet (220timesID). Figure1showsthetestset-up
for both pipes.Toprovideasmuchdata aspossible, testswere
performed over afull rangeof flowratesunder full operational
pipe conditions for both pipesizes.
Process
Eachtest-sectionset-up included:
Acalibratedflow-meter installed in theupstreampipingt
o
accuratelymeasure flow ratesfor eachtest run
Acontrolvalveto adjust flowratespassingthrough thetest
pipe
Pressuretaps(eachconsistingof ahole through thewallof
thepipe withabrassfitting)to makethetubing connections
Apressuretransmitterto makepressure-loss
measurements betweentheupstreamand downstream
pressuretaps
Flexibletubing to connecteachpressuretapto thehigh and
lowsidesof thepressuretransmitterfor measurements of
pressuredifferentials
After thetestpipes wereinstalled in thelaboratory flume,
woodbracesand nylon strapswereusedto keepthepipes
straight and to hold them in position whenpressurewas
applied.
Flowmeters werecalibratedfor accuracyimmediately prior to
theactualtesting.Foreachtestrun, flowrate through thepipe
and differential pressurealongthelength of thepipe were
measured.Differential-pressure measurements weretaken
from thepressuretapsthat wereinstalled in eachPVCpipe at
theupstreamand downstream ends of eachtestpipe section.
Throughout each test, constant flow wasmaintained through
the pipe length during the run period. Each averaging period
took between3and 5minutes,whichwaslong enough to:
Allowtheflow rateand differential pressureto stabilize
Recordtheactualflowrate through the flow meter
Recordtheaveragepressure differential

HYDRAULIC TESTING OF PVC PIPE: LABORATORYAND FIELDTESTSCONFIRM FLOWCOEFFICIENTS
10
CONCLUSION: PVC PIPE FLOW COEFFICIENTS ARE CONSERVATIVE
Thetwoquestions addressed by hydraulics testingwere answered:
Resultsof hydraulic testingperformed in the1970sareverified
Conservatismof recommendedflowcoefficientswasconfirmed. Testsshowedthat:
Hazen-Williams“C”= 150isconservativefor pressurepipedesign
Manning’s“n”= 0.009 isconservativefor gravitysewerpipedesign
Designersof PVCpipingsystemscanbe confidentthat thesecoefficientshaveprovidedconservativehydraulic designsin thepast
and willcontinue to do soin thefuture. Thereisno need to designwithahigher-friction PVCcoefficient.Thetestingshowsthat even
withvarying flow ratesand long use, theHW“C”factor remainsabove 150and theManning’s“n”staysbelow0.009. Theuseof
higher-friction coefficientsresults in engineeringdesignsthat arenot consistentwithprevious and currentfindings of PVCpipe’s
hydraulic attributes and mayresultin adding unnecessaryproject and operational costs.Thisisshownin thefollowing section.
COMPARISON OF FLOW COEFFICIENTS: RECOMMENDED VS.
CONSERVATIVE
Thissectionprovides examplesof howtheuseof overlyconservativehydraulic values(i.e.,“C”= 120or “n”= 0.013) mayleadto
additional costsfor projectsand pipeline operation (i.e.,increasein pipe size, pumpingcosts, gravitypipe slope, etc.).Actualcost
informationof pipe sizesisnot included.
PVC Water MainExample
AssumeaPVCDR18watermaindesignrequires sizingthepipe for aflow of 1,300gpm whilenot exceedingaheadlossof 10feet
per 1,000feet of pipe.For:
HW“C”factor of 120: 12”PVCDR18wouldbeselected
HW“C”factor of 150: 8”PVCDR18wouldbeselected
PVC Transmission MainExample
Assume20,000feet of 24”PVCDR25pipe conveys5,000gpm,thepump hasan overallefficiencyof 75%whileoperating24hours/
day,and thecostof electricityis$0.10/kWh.Thepumpingcostper year (not including inflation) basedon frictionlossisasfollows:
HW“C”factor of120represents $49,900/year
HW“C”factor of150represents $33,200/year
PVC GravitySewer MainExample
AssumeaPVCPS46sewerpipe designrequires sizingthepipe for aflow of 14cfson aslope of 0.05 feet per 100feet and
maintainingaminimum velocityof 2fps. For:
Manning’s“n”of 0.013: 36”PVCPS46wouldbeselected
Manning’s“n”of 0.009: 30”PVCPS46wouldbeselected
11
THE IMPORTANCE OF USING CONSERVATIVE FRICTION FACTORS
WHEN COMPARING TO OTHER PIPE MATERIALS
Designersshouldrealize that recommendedPVCpipe Hazen-Williams“C”= 150and Manning’s“n”= 0.009 areconservativevalues
compared to testdata. In fact, despite using awiderangeof flow velocities, everydata point in recentresearchhasbeen ator
betterthan theserecommendedvalues. When makingcomparisons withother materials, itisimportant to avoidusing average
valuesfor friction factorsfor hydraulic design, sinceaveragevaluesarenot conservative.Usersareencouraged to reviewtest data
from other pipematerialsto understand howtheir recommendedvalueswereobtained. Additionally, itisessentialthat
recommendedindustry coefficientsinclude anyinternal pipe-wallor pipe-liningdegradation.

HYDRAULIC TESTING OF PVC PIPE: LABORATORYAND FIELDTESTSCONFIRM FLOWCOEFFICIENTS 4 LABORATORY TESTING Introduction Laboratory hydraulics testingwasperformed in March 2022at theUWRLfacility.Thetestswererun on 6- and 12-inchPVC pipe to determine threecoefficients: Hazen-Williams “C” Darcy-Weisbach “f” Manning’s“n” Toimprove accuracyof measurements, minimum pipe length required was200timespipe insidediameter.Actuallengthfor the6-inchline was111feet (222timesID)and for the12-inch line was220feet (220timesID). Figure1showsthetestset-up for both pipes.Toprovideasmuchdata aspossible, testswere performed over afull rangeof flowratesunder full operational pipe conditions for both pipesizes. Process Eachtest-sectionset-up included: Acalibratedflow-meter installed in theupstreampipingt o accuratelymeasure flow ratesfor eachtest run Acontrolvalveto adjust flowratespassingthrough thetest pipe Pressuretaps(eachconsistingof ahole through thewallof thepipe withabrassfitting)to makethetubing connections Apressuretransmitterto makepressure-loss measurements betweentheupstreamand downstream pressuretaps Flexibletubing to connecteachpressuretapto thehigh and lowsidesof thepressuretransmitterfor measurements of pressuredifferentials After thetestpipes wereinstalled in thelaboratory flume, woodbracesand nylon strapswereusedto keepthepipes straight and to hold them in position whenpressurewas applied. Flowmeters werecalibratedfor accuracyimmediately prior to theactualtesting.Foreachtestrun, flowrate through thepipe and differential pressurealongthelength of thepipe were measured.Differential-pressure measurements weretaken from thepressuretapsthat wereinstalled in eachPVCpipe at theupstreamand downstream ends of eachtestpipe section. Throughout each test, constant flow wasmaintained through the pipe length during the run period. Each averaging period took between3and 5minutes,whichwaslong enough to: Allowtheflow rateand differential pressureto stabilize Recordtheactualflowrate through the flow meter Recordtheaveragepressure differential Pipe Dimensions Dimensionsfor 6-inchpipearefound in Table2and for12-inch pipe in Table3. Inside-diametermeasurements weretakenat theendsof thetestsections(wherethepressuretapswere installed). OverallaverageID isshownin eachtable and was usedto calculateroughness coefficients. • 10. HYDRAULIC TESTING OF PVC PIPE: LABORATORYAND FIELDTESTSCONFIRM FLOWCOEFFICIENTS 10 CONCLUSION: PVC PIPE FLOW COEFFICIENTS ARE CONSERVATIVE Thetwoquestions addressed by hydraulics testingwere answered: Resultsof hydraulic testingperformed in the1970sareverified Conservatismof recommendedflowcoefficientswasconfirmed. Testsshowedthat: Hazen-Williams“C”= 150isconservativefor pressurepipedesign Manning’s“n”= 0.009 isconservativefor gravitysewerpipedesign Designersof PVCpipingsystemscanbe confidentthat thesecoefficientshaveprovidedconservativehydraulic designsin thepast and willcontinue to do soin thefuture. Thereisno need to designwithahigher-friction PVCcoefficient.Thetestingshowsthat even withvarying flow ratesand long use, theHW“C”factor remainsabove 150and theManning’s“n”staysbelow0.009. Theuseof higher-friction coefficientsresults in engineeringdesignsthat arenot consistentwithprevious and currentfindings of PVCpipe’s hydraulic attributes and mayresultin adding unnecessaryproject and operational costs.Thisisshownin thefollowing section. COMPARISON OF FLOW COEFFICIENTS: RECOMMENDED VS. CONSERVATIVE Thissectionprovides examplesof howtheuseof overlyconservativehydraulic values(i.e.,“C”= 120or “n”= 0.013) mayleadto additional costsfor projectsand pipeline operation (i.e.,increasein pipe size, pumpingcosts, gravitypipe slope, etc.).Actualcost informationof pipe sizesisnot included. PVC Water MainExample AssumeaPVCDR18watermaindesignrequires sizingthepipe for aflow of 1,300gpm whilenot exceedingaheadlossof 10feet per 1,000feet of pipe. For: HW“C”factor of 120: 12”PVCDR18wouldbeselected HW“C”factor of 150: 8”PVCDR18wouldbeselected PVC Transmission MainExample Assume20,000feet of 24”PVCDR25pipe conveys5,000gpm,thepump hasan overallefficiencyof 75%whileoperating24hours/ day,and thecostof electricityis$0.10/kWh.Thepumpingcostper year (not including inflation) basedon frictionlossisasfollows: HW“C”factor of120represents $49,900/year HW“C”factor of150represents $33,200/year PVC GravitySewer MainExample AssumeaPVCPS46sewerpipe designrequires sizingthepipe for aflow of 14cfson aslope of 0.05 feet per 100feet and maintainingaminimum velocityof 2fps. For: Manning’s“n”of 0.013: 36”PVCPS46wouldbeselected Manning’s“n”of 0.009: 30”PVCPS46wouldbeselected
  • 11. 11 THE IMPORTANCE OF USING CONSERVATIVE FRICTION FACTORS WHEN COMPARING TO OTHER PIPE MATERIALS Designersshouldrealize that recommendedPVCpipe Hazen-Williams“C”= 150and Manning’s“n”= 0.009 areconservativevalues compared to testdata. In fact, despite using awiderangeof flow velocities, everydata point in recentresearchhasbeen ator betterthan theserecommendedvalues. When makingcomparisons withother materials, itisimportant to avoidusing average valuesfor friction factorsfor hydraulic design, sinceaveragevaluesarenot conservative.Usersareencouraged to reviewtest data from other pipematerialsto understand howtheir recommendedvalueswereobtained. Additionally, itisessentialthat recommendedindustry coefficientsinclude anyinternal pipe-wallor pipe-liningdegradation.
