• The lack of a social media presence can be just as
alarming to prospective employers
• 90% of recruiters conduct online research on potential
candidates
• 70% of employers who have used LinkedIn say they’ve chosen
not to hire a person based on what they’ve found about them
online
• 27% of employers give job seekers the opportunity to discuss
the online content associated with their name

Enhance your image/brand
• Make a strong impression on future business contacts
• Establish rapport with new clients
• Peer recommendations (LinkedIn) add credibility
• Demonstrate your strengths/subject matter expertise

A weak digital footprint can:
Detract from your professional image
• Unprofessional photos, comments, posts can
negatively affect your brand
• Cause you to miss opportunities
 Be aware not only of what you post, but of posts
that include you, i.e. tagged photo on Facebook

 Deactivate/delete old or abandoned accounts

 Be proactive: Google/Bing your name
 Set up a Google Alert or Mention account
 Delete any activity that you feel is not complementary
to the image you want to portray online
 If you have a common name, consider distinguishing
yourself with a middle initial or other identifier
