INTRODUCTION
The Wireless Gigabit Alliance - commonly called WiGig - is an
organization devoted to the development and promotion of wireless
communications in the 60 GHz band. Among the unlicensed frequency
bands available for wireless networks, 60 GHz is uniquely suited for
carrying extremely high data rates. WiGig has developed a medium
access control (MAC) layer, a physical (PHY) layer, and several protocol
adaptation layers (PALs) to enable interoperable devices that take
advantage of these extremely high data rates.
Why WiGig?
• The 60 GHz band has more spectrum available than the 2.4
GHz and 5 GHz bands
• Allows to connect all devices wirelessly
• Low power consumption
• The demand for
• Higher data rates
• High capacity
• Low latency
Specification:
 Support for data transmission rates up to 7 Gbps
 Advanced power management
 Multiband operation
 Support for beamforming
 Advanced security
WiGig Architecture:
Modulation schemes:
 ORTHOGONAL FREQUENCY DIVISION MULTIPLEXING(OFDM)
 Supports communication over longer distances with greater delay
spreads, providing more flexibility in handling obstacles and
reflected signals
 Allows the greatest transmission speeds of up to 7 Gbps
 SINGLE CARRIER(SC)
 Single carrier (SC) typically results in lower power consumption, so
it is often a better fit for small, low- power handheld devices
 SC supports transmission speeds up to 4.6 Gbps.
Physical layer:
Spectrum availability in various countries
• The 802.11ad specification defines four channels, each 2.16 GHz
wide – 50 times wider than the channels available in 802.11n.
• wide channels enable 60 GHz devices to support applications that
require extremely fast communication with low power consumption
Medium access control layer(MAC layer)
 Network Architecture
 Seamless multiband operation
 Power management
 Advanced security
Security:
Conventional WiFi
 WEP with 64bit or 128 bit
encryption Strength is relatively
easy to break
 WPA_PSK(WPA-pre shared key) is
less compatibile
WiGig
 WiGig CERTIFIED devices will use
Galois/ Counter Mode, a highly-
efficient mode of encryption that
is designed to support higher
communication speeds
 Advanced Encryption Standard
(AES) can be implemented in
hardware for performance and
efficiency
Protocol adaptation layer (PAL)
 Audio-Visual:
 WiGig Display Extension (WDE)
 Input-Output (I/O) PALs:
 WiGig Bus Extension
 WiGig SD Extension
 WiGig Serial Extension
Beamformimg:
 Signals in the 60 GHz band are more
susceptible to disruption from physical
barriers than at lower frequencies.
The IEEE 802.11ad specification
addresses this challenge using
adaptive beamforming, a technique
that enables robust multi-gigabit
communications at distances
greater than 10 meters
Applications:
Drawbacks:
 Limited range
 Needs beamforming
 susceptible to rain attenuation
 Degradiation of quality while moving
Summary:
 WiGig uses the unlicensed 60 GHz band
 Provide data rates up to 7 Gbps.
 Products with both Wi-Fi and WiGig integration will be
able to transparently switch among 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 60
GHz networks ensuring optimal performance.
 delivers instant, seamless, high speed (up to 7 Gbps)
wireless docking
 replaces cables for many devices including HD monitors,
USB storage, and keyboards
