The document summarizes India's largest hydroelectric project, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Power Project located on the Subansiri River in India's northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The 2000 MW project involves constructing a 116 meter high concrete gravity dam that will flood over 34 square kilometers of land and displace thousands of tribes. There are concerns about the project's impacts given the area's vulnerability to floods and earthquakes and potential damage to the local ecosystem and livelihoods.

3. Introduction
โข Official name subansiri lower hydroelectric power project (LSHEP)
โข It is located on subansiri river, which is on the border of India's two north-eastern states,
arunachal Pradesh and assam.
โข Status under construction
โข Construction began December 2007
โข Construction cost Rs. 62.9 billion
โข The project is being developed by the state-run national hydropower corporation (NHPC).
โข The total volume of this dam is 2,250,000 m3
โข The Project Cost is Rs.6285.33 Crores (December 2002 Price Level)
โข Now Anticipated: Rs. 19992.43 Crores (Januaryโ2020 Price Level).
4. ๏ง A concrete gravity dam 116 m high from river bed level & and 210 m from foundation.
๏ง Its length will be 284 m and the dam will have a structural volume of 2,250,000 m3
๏ง Horse shoe shaped head race tunnel - 8 nos., 9.5m diameter & 7102m total length.
๏ง Horse shoe shaped surge tunnels - 8 nos., 9.5 m dia., 3545m total length.
๏ง Tail race channel which will transfer water discharged by the turbines back to the river,
is 206 m wide x 35 m long.
๏ง The dam reservoir's surface will cover 33.5 km2
๏ง The reservoir created by the dam will have a gross storage capacity of 1.37 km3, of
which 44 km3 can be used for power generation or irrigation.

โข The project is being developed by Patel engineering worth Rs.1564 cr
โข Project director - Mr. Shakeel Chauhan
โข The powerhouse will comprise eight Francis-type turbines capable of
generating 250MW of electricity each.
โข The total Capacity is 2000 MW (8x250 MW)
โข After completion this will be the largest hydropower generation
project in India.
โข This project expected to be completed in 2023

8. Concerns -
โข The area in which dam is located Has been
very vulnerable to flood and earthquake.
โข Landslides prone area.
โข The 116 metre high will submerge the
3436 hectares of land.
โข displacement of tribes.
โข The Subansiri project will lead the internal
displacement on a massive scale and will
affect the livelihood of a substantial
number of the population.
9. Environmental impact
โข These impacts will include ecosystem damage and loss of land on both upstream and
downstream of the dam site.
โข The reservoir of the Subansiri Project will submerge a 47 km length of the Subansiri river and
occupy 37.5โ40 km2 which includes Himalayan subtropical pine forests, Himalayan subtropical
broadleaf forests, part of the Tale Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, an elephant corridor and some
subsistence agriculture fields.
โข Around two lakhs peoples will be displaced if the dam is completed, according to official data
โข Large dams have led to the extinction of many fish and other aquatic species, the disappearance
of birds in floodplains, huge losses of forest, wetland and farmland, erosion of coastal deltas, and
many other unmitigable impacts.
