Diabetes
Definition
Diabetes is a defect in the body's ability to convert glucose (sugar) to energy.
There are three major types of diabetes. The causes and risk factors are different
for each type:
Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age, but it is most often diagnosed in
children, teens, or young adults. In this disease, the body makes little or
no insulin. Daily injections of insulin are needed. The exact cause is
unknown.
Type 2 diabetes makes up most of diabetes cases. It most often occurs in
adulthood, but teens and young adults are now being diagnosed with it
because of high obesity rates. Many people with type 2 diabetes do not
know they have it.
Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar that develops at any time
during pregnancy in a woman who does not have diabetes.
Symptoms
High blood sugar levels can cause several symptoms, including:
Blurry vision
Excess thirst
Fatigue
Frequent urination
Hunger
Weight loss
Prevention and Control
See your health care professional for regular check ups
Maintain a healthy diet
Exercise regularly
A strict daily intake of medication if prescribed

CHOLESTROL
Definition
Cholesterol is a form of fat that is carried through the body in two kinds of
bundles, or lipoproteins. It's important to have healthy levels of both.
Low-density lipoproteins (LDL), or "bad" cholesterol, can lead to a buildup of
cholesterol in the arteries. In general, the lower your LDL the better. Reaching
your LDL target is the most effective way to protect your heart and blood vessels.
High-density lipoproteins (HDL), or "good" cholesterol, helps remove cholesterol
from your body. In general, the higher your HDL the better.
Causes
Being overweight
Lack of exercise and leading an inactive lifestyle
Smoking
Food with saturated fats
Symptoms
Typically, there are no symptoms of high cholesterol. This means that you may not
know if your cholesterol levels are high. However, a simple blood test, called a lipid
panel or cholesterol screening, can determine your cholesterol levels
Prevention and Control
It’s a good idea to have your cholesterol checked every year if there’s a problem.
Here are some steps you can take to improve your cholesterol:
If you smoke, quit
Lose weight if needed
Exercise most days of the week (brisk walking for 30 minutes/day is a
good goal)
Eat a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet with plenty of fresh veggies, whole
grains, and fruit
Increase monounsaturated fats in your diet. Monounsaturated fats
include canola oil, avocado oil, or olive oil
Your doctor may also prescribe cholesterol-lowering medicine

Too much salt in the diet
Alcohol consumption

Older age
Genetics
Family history of high blood pressure

OBESITY
Definition
Obesity means having too much body fat. It is not the same as being overweight,
which means weighing too much. A person may be overweight from extra muscle,
bone, or water, as well as from having too much fat.
Causes
Taking in more calories than you burn can lead to obesity because the body stores
unused calories as fat. Obesity can be caused by:
Eating more food than your body can use
Drinking too much alcohol
Not getting enough exercise
Symptoms
Difficulty in doing daily activities
Shortness of breath
Disproportionate facial features
Big belly (abdomen) sometimes marked with white or purple blemishes
Prevention and Control
Eating healthy
Regular Exercise
Avoid excess sleeping
Avoid or minimize sugar intake
Be sure to eat plenty of vegetables
Reduce your carbohydrate consumption (breads, rice, pasta, potatoes)
