Bangladesh having Trade Policies with Countries...
European Countries…
 EU works closely with Bangladesh in the framework
of EU-Bangladesh Cooperation Agreement,
concluded in 2001.
 Bangladesh as a least developed country, benefits
from the EU's 'Everything but Arms' arrangement,
which grants duty-free, quota-free access for all
exports, except arms and ammunition.
 In 2020, Bangladesh was the EU's 34th largest
trading partner in goods.
 EU imports from Bangladesh are dominated by
clothing, accounting for over 90% of the EU's total
imports from Bangladesh.
 EU exports to Bangladesh are dominated by
machinery and transport equipment.
 Between 2017 and 2020, EU-28 imports from
Bangladesh reached on average €14.8 billion per
year, which represents half of Bangladesh's total
exports.
Bangladesh having Trade Policies with Countries...
United States of America…
 USA is Bangladesh's one of the most important
trading partners, with approximately 19-20% of its
exports are being destined for the United States.
 Bangladesh is the 43rd largest trading partner of USA
in goods.
 USA have signed a bilateral investment treaty, as
well as a bilateral treaty for the avoidance of double
taxation.
 U.S. goods exports to Bangladesh in 2021 were $3.4
billion, up 12.4% from 2019 and up 438% from
2009.
 U.S. goods imports from Bangladesh totaled $7.7
billion in 2021, up 9.5% from 2019 and up 80.6%
from 2009.
 Bangladesh as the least developed country, benefits
including; grants duty-free, quota-free access for
almost all of the exports, except arms and
ammunition.
Bangladesh having Trade Policies with Countries...
Asian Countries…
 Bangladesh has 5 trade agreements in force, 0 signed
agreements pending ratification, and 4 trade
agreements under negotiation.
 The largest product category exported by Bangladesh
in Asia is; Suits, ensembles, jackets, blazers,
trousers, bib and brace overalls, breeches and shorts,
men's or boys' not knitted or crocheted.
 Second largest imported product category is Cotton,
not carded or combed.
 Bangladesh now works vigorously to sign FTA with
ASEAN before LDC graduation.
 Bangladesh's average tariff is 14.8%, which has to be
lowered to an average of 1 to 2%, if it wishes to enter
into FTA with the ASEAN.
 Lowering import tariff would not be a major task for
Bangladesh as the government is now attaching more
importance to direct tax collection and for revenue
reform to lower it gradually.
Bangladesh having Trade Policies with Countries...
African Countries…
 Bangladesh looks to grab export opportunities in
untapped African countries, including tightening
trade ties and increasing export earnings.
 Bangladesh exports to only 5 or 6 African
countries and high import tariffs are a major
barrier, apart from the infrastructure deficiencies
to increase exports.
 Ministry and BTTA has started negotiating with a
number of African nations to sign bilateral FTA
to boost trade and investment.
 Bangladeshi pharmaceutical items have a very
good market in Africa that may flourish by FTA
or PTA.
 More than one fourth of the earnings volume can
be achieved from South Africa if the proper FTA
or PTA with Africa can be initiated and
implemented.
Bangladesh having Trade Policies with Countries...
Oceania Pacific…
 Exports from Bangladesh will officially
continue to get duty and quota-free access to
the Australian market by 2026.
 Two countries has agreed to enhance industry
connections between Australian exporters of
raw materials like cotton, wool, hides and
importers and manufacturers in Bangladesh.
 Bangladesh goods have been enjoying duty-
free-quota-free access to Australian market
subject to fulfilment of Rules of Origin
criteria. Australia and Bangladesh officially
signed the TIFA. The TIFA will contribute to
the expansion of bilateral trade opportunities
in multiple sectors, including; agriculture,
infrastructure and education.

Impact of Trade Barriers on Import & Export (%) [2015 - 2020]
Import Export
Findings…
Findings
Initiating &
Expanding Trade
Agreement
Facilitating flexible
trade policies to
potential sectors
Imposing tariff and
non – tariff
barriers to protect
domestic firms and
to get competitive
advantage
Getting more
export oriented
than being the
import oriented
Tariff rates are still
higher, creating
havocs in some
specific areas
VER for non
compilation the
regulations by the
exporting
countries
 Bangladesh should take more initiatives to expand more
FTA with the potential countries for profitable international
trade.
 Government should promote and even provide subsidies
to the exporters to gain more capabilities in doing
international trade.
 Trade barriers shall be revised on regular basis to ensure
the full flexibility in international trade.
 Government should work on the restrictions imposed by
the foreign companies to be free and again to continue
their trade activities according to their standardization so
that, Bangladesh don’t have to lose their international
market.
