4. Barauni Refinery
Built in 1964 with the
help of Romania and
USSR
2nd Oil refinery of public
sector .
Largest integrated
Refinery and
Petrochemicals Hub in
India and 3rd in South-East
Asia
Present Capacity: 6
MMTPA
Designed to process
crude oil of low sulfur
content which is imported
from South East Asia,
Africa and Middle East
This Oil refinery caters its
products to Bihar, North
West Bengal, parts of U.P.
and Nepal
8. Requirement of pumps in refinery
For circulation
of cooling
water
For pumping
the fluid (crude
oil, diesel etc.)
in reactors with
high pressure.
In liquid
storage tanks
It is used for
circulate crude
oil from one
place to
another place
9. Centrifugal pump
• It convert mechanical energy into pressure
energy by means of centrifugal force
• The fluid enters the pump impeller along or
near to the rotating axis and is accelerated by
the impeller, flowing radially outward into a
volute chamber (casing), from where it exits.
10. Screw pump
Used for High Viscous
fluid without loosing
flow rate
High efficient as the flow
increases
Pump is silent while
running
12. Requirement of valves
Its function can be stopping or
starting the flow, controlling flow
rate, diverting flow.
preventing back flow, controlling
pressure, or relieving pressure.
control of fluid flow or pressure is
required
Very important for safety.
15. TPS of Barauni
The Barauni refinery has its own thermal power station for
production of and electricity
Some salient features of TPS, Barauni Refinery are following :-
• There are four Russian boilers and new boiler of IJT company LTD. Being installed
all are water tube boilers
• It has two Russian turbo generators TG-I AND TG-II each of capacity 12MW and
one Indian turbo generated made by BHEL Hyderabad of capacity 12.5 MW
• Water treated in DM PLANT after artesian well storage for steam generation in
boilers
• Circulation water is cooled in cooling tower systems
• It has two gas turbine of capacity 20 MW each
