AT&T is scheduled to power Volvo’s US 2015 model year
connected car solution with Sensus Connect, an embedded
infotainment service. Volvo customers in the U.S. and Canada
will also have access to Volvo On Call, a service allowing
remote access to car functions and an emergency crash
notification service. Volvo plans to enable cars with AT&T on-
board for sale this summer.
As a telematics leader, AT&T already provides a variety of
vehicle solutions to automobile manufacturers around the
world. Volvo’s solution incorporates AT&T’s Single SIM
platform to provide coverage in the U.S. and Canada.
The Single SIM, along with a world-class service management
platform, AT&T Control Center powered by Jasper Wireless,
arms Volvo with the ability to manage wireless device
deployment and operations across markets with advanced
diagnostic tools and smart alerting.
US: AT&T to supply Volvo with
Sensus connectivity
Following similar deals with GM and Audi, AT&T
has entered into a new multi-year agreement to
enable future Volvo vehicles in the U.S. and
Canada with high speed wireless connectivity.

UK: RAC and Quindell invest
£30M in Connected Car Solutions
The UK RAC motoring club and insurance and
telecoms technology business Quindell have
formed a joint venture creating a new business,
Connected Car Solutions Limited, to distribute
their telematics technology with an initial £30m
investment.
The two businesses have worked closely on the development
of state-of-the-art telematics technology and the new joint
venture company will market and distribute this technology
across the UK, Europe and Canada.
The RAC is a UK breakdown assistance provider and offers a
range of vehicle insurance and motoring products. It has led
the development of advanced telematics in the UK developing
the functionality and integration with new technologies to
better serve members and make their motoring experience
easier, safer and more affordable.
The creation of the joint venture follows a successful year of
Quindell providing an outsourced RAC Accident Management
service. Whilst the joint investment is called Connected Car
Solutions, the business will trade as both Quindell Connected
Car Solutions and RAC Connected Car Solutions. The Quindell
brand will primarily be used for existing insurance
relationships, and the RAC brand, which has been licensed to
Connected Car Solutions, will be used primarily for fleet, and
consumer relationships.
Late last year Quindell signed a deal with the Canadian
Automobile Association (CAA) covering the provision of
telematics-based services including insurance.

Parrot files Euro18.4M lawsuit
against Elektrobit and Audi
Elektrobit (EB) says it has received information
that a supplier of e.solutions, Parrot, has filed a
lawsuit against e.solutions in the Tribunal de
Commerce de Paris (Commercial Court Paris)
seeking to collect damages in the amount of
approximately EUR 18.4 million for loss of profit
and reputational damage.
Based on the e.solutions’ initial legal analysis the claim is
without merit both in terms of the grounds and the amount of
the claim. Further, based on the agreement between the
parties, the Tribunal de Commerce de Paris is not a competent
forum to process the dispute. e.solutions will give its response
to the claim to the court in due course.
The claim is based on Parrot’s allegation that e.solutions
terminated the agreement entered into between e.solutions
and Parrot abruptly and fraudulently, when e.solutions
decided not to use Parrot’s software on a certain project. This,
Parrot argues, constitutes an unjustified termination of the
contract according to the French law and entitles Parrot for
loss of profit on the basis of tort.
Based on the current estimate, the legal proceedings will not
cause any such financial obligation to e.solutions or to EB that
would affect EB’s profit outlook and financial position. It is
possible that, based on later information, this view may need
to be reconsidered. At the worst, Parrot’s claim could result
significant negative impact on e.solutions’ and EB’s profit, cash
flow and financial position.
e.solutions GmbH is a jointly owned company of EB’s
subsidiary, Elektrobit Automotive GmbH, and Audi’s
subsidiary, Audi Electronics Venture GmbH (AEV), and is
currently developing infotainment software and provides
systems engineering and systems integration services for
Volkswagen Group car models. EB owns 51% of e.solutions
GmbH and AEV 49%.

US: Updated CUE for new
MY2015 Cadillac Escalade
Technology is integral to the new MY2015
Cadillac Escalade’s driving experience. New and
enhanced features help make what already was
one of the industry’s most-connected vehicles
more intuitive.
CUE – Cadillac User Experience – is standard. It is an
advanced system for connectivity and control, featuring state-
of-the-art voice recognition with touch controls common with
the world’s most popular tablets and mobile devices. The
eight-inch center screen uses capacitive touch technology and
gesture recognition, enabling tapping and swiping common to
smartphones and tablets.
The system also uses proximity sensors to activate common
options and controls as the user’s hand approaches. An
expanded “favorites” section offers quick access to phone
contacts, navigation destinations – even digital music – in the
same one-touch form common to traditional radio presets.
The instrument cluster features a reconfigurable, high-
resolution 12.3-inch digital driver information center display
paired with Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system, with data also
shown on an available, full-color head-up display on Luxury
and Premium Collections. Along with vehicle systems
information, the information center provides details on the
audio, Bluetooth phone and navigation systems, adjustable via
steering wheel controls.
Enhanced connectivity includes a new Text-to-Voice feature
for smartphone users with Bluetooth profile (MAP), which
reads incoming texts through the vehicle’s speakers, and Siri
Eyes Free for iPhone iOS 6 and iOS 7 users to enhance
connectivity and convenience. Each enables voice-controlled
connectivity to help keep phones in pockets and hands on the
wheel.
Additionally, OnStar’s new 4G LTE connection and available
Wi-Fi hotspot makes Escalade a mobile hub, providing easier
access to apps and services that require a high-speed data
connection. The vehicle employs an “always on” wireless
connection, which is not reliant on a brought-in mobile device.
The OnStar 4G LTE connection arrives later in the model year.

Telematics News (TN): Streetline was in the news recently after announcing it has released the ParkerData Availability API. Can you
give us some insight into how this could be used for in-car navigation systems or smartphone apps?
Streetline: The ParkerData Availability API can be used in a number of ways: powering websites, mobile
applications, dynamic signage, in-car navigation systems, to name a few. Just as some navigation systems and
mapping services show an overlay of traffic information or “points of Interest,” the ParkerData Availability API
can act as a real-time layer to indicate available parking.
We at Streetline see parking as an ingredient. We have developed our own suite of applications including Parker
for consumer guidance and ParkerMap for merchant website use, but we believe getting the data out through as
many channels as possible is how real change and improvement will be achieved. Now, with the data being
integrated beyond Streetline products, we hope to see these benefits multiply as we work to create a truly
“smart” city, starting with parking.
TN: Which companies are already using the Streetline parking information? What services have been developed based on this data?
The Streetline Smart Parking Platform is live in over 40 locations (cities, universities, corporate campuses,
transit authorities) across the U.S. and Europe. The Streetline system powers a number of applications including:
Parker, Streetline’s leading consumer guidance application for motorists; ParkerMap, Streetline’s embeddable
map widget that merchants can use on their website to display nearby parking availability; and ParkSight,
Streetline’s real-time and historical data and analytics tool for customers (cities, universities, etc.) that enables
parking providers to understand true utilization of parking assets and make critical policy and pricing changes to
optimize efficient use of resources.
TN: How do you collect your parking data? What coverage do you have?
Currently, data capture is achieved through Streetline’s in-ground sensors and through counting equipment like
gates and loops, supplied by third party vendors. The sensors use a combination of sensing types to determine
occupancy. That occupancy information is then sent to our backend to power our suite of applications. Our loop
and gate partners provide us with an API to capture occupancy information in off-street facilities, data that also
feeds into our backend to populate the Streetline application suite. We are encouraged by the momentum in the
smart parking and smart city spaces and are constantly researching and assessing the viability of other sensing
types and ways of data capture.
Streetline also has an off-street directory of more than 25,000 off-street facilities. Each record contains
important location and policy information such as address, pricing, hours of operation, special use spaces (EV,
HCP, oversized). Combined with the real-time availability from sensors and counting equipment, the off-street
database powers Parker, ParkerMap, and ParkerData.
Streetline has nearly 40 real-time customers with the largest sensor deployment in the city of Los Angeles with
8,000 sensors. The U.S. houses the majority of Streetline’s customer base, however, interest and adoption in
Europe and South America continues to grow with deployments already in Manchester and Birmingham in the
UK, Braunschweig in Germany, and Barcelona in Spain.
EXCLUSIVE: Carmakers want parking services and
Streetline has the data
Asdrubal Pichardo, Streetline Managing Director for EMEA and APAC, talks parking

M.Sc. degree in Advanced Computing from King’s College London.
Asdrúbal Pichardo
Managing Director EMEA & APAC
TN: A couple of years ago, Streetline announced an agreement with Siemens
covering parking management and data collection. Could you give an update on
the current status of this project?
Streetline has a long-standing and valued relationship with
Siemens, who handles the majority of the physical
installation of Streetline sensors and network equipment
across our varied deployments. It is partners like Siemens
that help us to rollout deployments efficiently and to
expand our customer base. In addition to Siemens,
Streetline partners with Citi, Cisco, IBM, Orange,
Telefónica, and Xerox, among others. We believe that our
strong partner ecosystem is vital to our growth and health
as a company.
TN: What does the future hold for Streetline? Are there plans to expand geographically, or to offer other information services in
addition to parking data?
In 2013, the number of real-time customers doubled when compared to the previous year—we intend to
maintain this growth and solidify a stronger international presence both in EMEA and South America.
Streetline believes in the power of innovation and information to transform our cities into communicative,
efficient systems– from a reduced environmental footprint to more efficient deployment of resources. The
beauty of the Streetline platform is the ability to add additional sensing types, like sound level and road surface
temperature detection, without the need for supplemental hardware or infrastructure. Though parking will
remain Streetline’s core, we have just the scratched the surface on additional smart city sensing and we are
excited at its immense potential.
Furthermore, the momentum of the Connected Car prompts the accelerated growth and importance of parking
data as a key component to its success. We envision smart parking solutions will transform journey planning
from fragmented, incomplete systems, to a full end-to-end solution that will redefine the way people live and
work, revolutionize mobility, reduce environmental impact, and improve quality of life.

Telematics News (TN): Telefonica has announced it will be providing connectivity for Tesla in most of Europe. Can you give us some
insight into what services Tesla will be using Telefonica to facilitate?
Telefónica: Telefónica’s global M2M solution – powered by the Jasper Wireless Control Center - will enable
connectivity for Tesla’s industry-leading in-car infotainment telematics including navigation, online music, and
internet browsing, and remote vehicle diagnostics that relay information about the car’s safety, security and
performance to the driver and Tesla service in real time.
The Tesla Model S, an award winning five-door sedan, was launched in 2012, with deliveries beginning in Europe
in 2013. Its state of the art features include remote driver support and a connected infotainment control centre.
The 17 inch touchscreen puts rich content at the fingertips of drivers and passengers, seamlessly integrating
media, navigation, communications, cabin controls and vehicle data.
TN: What business model is Tesla using? Is it paying Telefonica a one off fee to connect the car for its lifetime? Or do drivers have to
pay an annual subscription? Can already existing Telefonica customers use their current phone data plan for their car servcies?
It is a multi-year, multi-country agreement. Connectivity is free to the driver. In its Q4 shareholder’s letter Tesla
said: “To further enhance the driver experience, new Model S customers will now receive free data connectivity
and Internet radio for four years. As an added benefit to our existing Model S customers, the free four year
period starts on January 1, 2014. To be fair to all, in rare cases a customer may be charged for extreme data
use.”
TN: Last year, Telefonica was very active in the telematics-based insurance market with services launched in Germany (Sparkassen)
and Spain (Generali Seguros). What progress have you made in this insurance M2M space? Are there plans for other services in more
European countries?
As part of our mission to become a digital telco and offer market leading digital services we are exploring a
number of areas, one of which is insurance telematics.
We used 2013 as a year to test the telematics market and consumer eagerness consequently adjusting our
value proposition and operations to meet current and future needs. This was the perfect time to test and adjust.
We have also started to focus attention on the product incubation side to shape new business models and next-
generation solutions.
TN: Telefonica Vivo in Brazil set up a Smart Center to support Cloud-based M2M services for connected cars. Can you give a progress
update on OnStar in Brazil and the DENATRAN 245 SIMRAV stolen vehicle tracking programme?
Onstar (General Motors,) alongside many other car manufacturers, has been delaying its decision to launch
connected cars in Brazil until a clear view has been formed on regulations surrounding the Denatran service.
The latest news suggests that there might be some legal constrains for the Denatran launch but, regardless,
manufacturers have accelerated their processes to prepare for connected cars in Brazil.

TN: A couple of years ago, Telefonica and Masternaut announced an agreement to jointly market telematics-enables fleet
management services. Could you give an update on the current status of this project?
We are getting good traction and have received good customer feedback. While our 2013 focus has been the
Corporate and Top SMB segments, we have also spent some time to prepare our sales and customer care
channels to start addressing the wider SMB segments.
Our customers see value on us being the “first line” of sales and support, mainly on our ability to provide
integrated customer care and billing, around the clock support when needed and financial stability (a must today
when multi-national companies source services at the core of their operations).
TN: What is next for Telefonica in the automotive space? How close are we to testing 5G for in-car services? Is Telefonica involved in
active safety developments such as V2X communications and autonomous cars?
We intend to remain at the cutting edge of developments in telecommunications and cars, participating in many
exciting initiatives such as those focusing on Smart City integration and collaborating with the GSMA forum on a
future 5G standard. We will work with a number of platforms and ecosystem players to provide cars with the
applications that enhance the experience of our customers.

European Parliament votes to end
roaming charges
The European Parliament has voted to end
roaming charges by Christmas 2015, as part of a
wider vote in support to the Commission’s
proposed regulation for a “Connected Continent”
telecoms single market.
European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes said: “This
vote is the EU delivering for citizens. This is what the EU is all
about – getting rid of barriers to make life easier and less
expensive.”
“Nearly all of us depend on mobile and internet connections as
part of our daily lives. We should know what we are buying, we
should not be ripped-off, and we should have the opportunity
to change our mind. Companies should have the chance to
serve all of us, and this regulation makes it easier for them to
do that. It’s win-win.”
“In 2010 I promised to end roaming charges by the end of
2015, and now we are one step away from achieving that
result.”
“Beyond the highly visible barrier of roaming we are now close
to removing many other barriers so Europeans can enjoy
open, seamless communications wherever they are”.
EU Member States will now continue to review the regulation
and the Commission expects final agreement of the
Regulation by end of 2014.
The “Connected Continent” telecoms Regulation aims to bring
us much closer to a truly single market for telecoms in the EU,
by ending roaming charges, guaranteeing an open internet for
all by banning blocking and degrading of content, coordinating
spectrum licensing for wireless broadband, giving internet and
broadband customers more transparency in their contracts,
and making it easier for customers to switch providers.
SBD Comment ~ The removal of roaming charges and the
Netherlands decision to allow carrier-free SIMs is part of a
trend in Europe towards freeing up the mobile communication
ecosystem. This should have a positive impact on carmakers
planning to offer connectivity solutions across national
borders. SBD’s quarterly Connected Car Government Guide
discusses the impact government legislation is having on the
automotive telematics space. For more information contact

demographics, plus featured new stations, Internet radio,
podcasts, audiobooks, news, Twitter and Facebook updates
and nearby location listings for restaurants, coffee houses,
hotels, weather, parks, and gas stations. Users can tap to
personalize stations or add favorites via smartphone or
directly through the Display Audio interface.
Launcher App –Finds and organizes Honda-approved 3rd
party apps so they can be quickly integrated into the Display
Audio system. Approved apps can be found through the
Launcher and shown on the Display Audio screen for easy
access.
HondaLink Assist
An additional new feature on Fit EX and above is HondaLink
Assist that can help request emergency assistance for drivers.
If a compatible phone is paired through Bluetooth
HandsFreeLink, there is a cellular connection and an airbag
deployment sensor is triggered by a collision, the system is
designed to automatically attempt to notify an operator,
report the car’s current location, and allow you to talk directly
to the operator. The operator can then contact emergency
services if needed.
Siri Eyes Free Integration
Adding another new premium feature, Display Audio
integrates Apple’s Siri Eyes Free mode into the Fit. Compatible
iPhone users will be able to operate Siri through familiar voice
commands by pressing and holding the TALK button on the
steering wheel when their iPhone is paired via Bluetooth.
Using Eyes Free mode, Siri takes hands-free functionality even
further and helps to minimize potential distractions by
keeping an iOS device’s screen from lighting up.
Bluetooth HandsFreeLink
The Bluetooth HandsFreeLink interface is designed to offer
hands-free operation for many Bluetooth-enabled mobile
telephones. Standard on all Fit models, the system wirelessly
connects the driver’s cell phone to the vehicle’s audio system.
This allows the driver to make or answer cell phone calls
without removing hands from the steering wheel. The system
is compatible with Bluetooth-enabled cell phones that have
the Hands Free Profile (HFP). A list of compatible phones can
be found at handsfreelink.com or honda.com.

Russia: GLONASS suffers 11-
hour outage
Users of satellite navigation systems around the
world experienced problems last week after
Russia’s GLONASS satellite positioning system
was hit by a major disruption.
So far, the cause of the problem is a mystery. It started around
9 p.m. on April 1, when most of the 24 satellites that make up
the Glonass constellation began broadcasting erroneous data
about their locations. The ability of satellite positioning
receivers to provide an accurate fix is tied to the accuracy of
the signal from space, so the problem immediately affected
users.
The U.S. Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS) was not
directly affected. But many modern GPS receivers and
smartphones also rely on GLONASS signals for an accurate
location fix, so the Russian glitch caused problems well beyond
that country’s borders.
A status graph on the website of Russia’s Federal Space
Agency confirmed the error impacted all Glonass satellites at
some point, with the system finally returning to full health
around 11 hours after the trouble began.
Despite the widespread disruption, the space agency has yet
to provide details about what caused it.
SBD Comment ~ In addition to navigation systems, the
Russian government is promoting the use of GLONASS for the
ERA GLONASS eCall service. In-car eCall systems will start to
be fitted in newly Type Approved cars from 2015, according to
SBD’s quarterly Connected Car Government Guide. For more

Pioneer chooses Frontier Silicon
for DAB receivers
Frontier Silicon today announces that the new
range of Pioneer DAB+ enabled consumer audio
devices will be based on Frontier’s DAB
technology solutions.
Pioneer’s decision to incorporate DAB technology into an
extended range of models is a response to the growing
demand across Europe for devices capable of receiving digital
radio.
Hideaki Tsuchida, General Manager, Business Planning
Division at Pioneer Home Electronics Corporation said: “For
some time, digital radio has been established in the UK,
Norway, Denmark, Switzerland and Australia, and following
the launch of DAB+ in Germany in 2011, the European market
is really beginning to take-off. In the last two years, the
German market has grown significantly and following the
launch of DAB+ in the Netherlands in 2013, it is clear that
momentum is building across the continent – with growing
signs of interest from several other countries including Italy,
France, Poland, Belgium and Sweden. For Pioneer, the time is
clearly right to establish ourselves as a leader in this market.”

Connected Car OE Services Guides
The Connected Car OE Services Guide now covers 8 more regions!
Since the launch of the first solutions in 2009, over
30 vehicle manufacturers (OEMs) in China have
deployed telematics, mostly offering the same
services and relying on similar business models. It is
therefore not surprising that few (if any) OEMs can
honestly claim to have successfully developed the
ideal equation for offering telematics services.
In fact, within this report we demonstrate that the
cost/benefit equation for telematics in China is
increasingly skewed in the wrong direction. The costs
associated with telematics are being pushed up by
expensive call centres and a tendency to rely on
embedded connectivity, whilst the benefits are being
kept low by conservative fitment strategies (with the
exception of a few OEMs) and low re-subscription
rates.
SBD’s best-selling piece of Connected Car research,
the Connected Car OE Services Guide, has been
expanded to cover OE connected services in 8 more
regions in addition to Europe, USA and China.
While the Europe, USA and China editions will
continue to be updated quarterly, the 8 new regional
editions will be published annually. Check the report

Fiat launches eco:Drive Social
community app
Fiat’s eco:Drive (the innovative system that
gives drivers a better perception of how their
driving style influences consumption and the
emission of pollutants) has grown through the
years and met with considerable success,
involving many drivers who want to improve
their eco-friendly driving credentials.
eco:Drive was initially made available on Fiat range models
equipped with Blue&Me or Uconnect infotainment systems,
on petrol, diesel and methane engine versions, for individuals
and fleet managers.
As you drive, eco:Drive collects all information on how you
handle the vehicle and its efficiency. The data is processed and
the driver can analyse the consumption and emissions on each
of their journeys as well as receive advice.
From 2012, the eco:Drive Live version has been available - on
the 500L, 500L Trekking and 500L living models - allowing
users to monitor their driving style in real time on the radio
display.
The data gathered from regular users of eco:Drive highlight
the fact that consumption can be reduced by up to 16 per cent
by following its advice, with clear benefits in terms of polluting
emissions. More than 95,000 customers (of which more than
11,000 in 2013 alone) have used eco:Drive, with a reduction
of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere of 5,800 tonnes per
year.
eco:Drive Social
But the innovation of eco:Drive doesn’t stop with these
figures, significant though they may be: taking advantage of all
its potential as well as that of modern technology, today sees
the launch of “eco:Drive Social”, the international community
of regular users of the application who want to share their
results with others.
With eco:Drive Social, you can find friends all over the world,
connect with them and share your eco-friendly performance
on Facebook or Twitter. All you need to do is download the
app from www.fiat.com/ecodrive, connect using your
Facebook or Twitter account, contact your friends, invite new
ones and get followers or follow new users, sharing your
activity, results and improvements with the whole community
created in this way.
After logging in, you’ll be able to find a series of virtual badges
that certify your “good deeds” at the wheel, demonstrate your
level of user interaction and record your “social ranking”. This
way, users can increase their popularity both by improving
their eco-performance and by sharing it on social networking
sites and involving new friends.

Audi launches new MMI connect
App to sync car and phone
Owners of the all-new 2015 Audi A3 can now
use their smartphone to enhance their
ownership experience with the Audi MMI
connect App.
The App will synch directly with the available MMI Navigation
plus to elevate features both in and outside the car.
The MMI connect App also works alongside owners’ existing
myAudi accounts. Key features include:
Online destinations
With functionality supported by Google Maps, drivers can
search for a destination in advance, send that destination to
their car via myAudi, and program it in the MMI Navigation
system. The App also allows them to browse contacts or
calendar entries for address details and send them to the car.
Picture destinations
With Picture destinations, drivers don’t even need an address.
They can select any geo-coded picture from an existing
picture album on their smartphone, or take a new picture on
the spot, and send it to their car. Once in the car, drivers can
browse through the photos and navigate to the destination
where the photos were taken. This feature also makes it very
convenient to drive to a friend or family member — friends and
family simply send a geo-coded picture from their location and
the App can be used to upload the image to the vehicle.
Music stream
When a passenger’s smartphone is connected to the MMI
system over the in-car Wi-Fi, it’s possible to access thousands
of web radio stations, as well as any music stored on their
smartphone. Using the MMI interface, vehicle occupants can
browse top stations, select from their favorite radio stations,
or go through playlists on their device. For passengers, the
App offers additional functionality including radio station
selection by genre, topic, country, or language, as well as free-
text searches and storing favorites. These features are
available once the smartphone is connected to the MMI
system over the available Wi-Fi. The App can also be used
outside a vehicle to listen to web-radio (home, office, etc.).
Car finder
Thanks to Car finder, drivers can access their vehicle location
through the App. When their smartphone is connected to the
in-vehicle Wi-Fi, the MMI connect App makes a note of where
the car is parked, allowing drivers to easily navigate back to it
from wherever they might be. The Car finder feature also
allows users to take a photo of where they parked, which is
stored with their vehicle location, to help recall area markers,
garage levels, or other important information.

Here are the key highlights:
Smart Emergency Crash Notification (sECN) app
This app was developed with the aim to bring rapid assistance
to motorists involved in a collision. In case of a crash, the sECN
app automatically sends an SMS to a number (emergency
service or family) which can be personalized. The app is paired
with the vehicle via Bluetooth. In the event of a crash, a trigger
is initiated by an airbag control unit. On receiving the trigger
from the vehicle, the sECN app finds the location (latitude and
longitude) of the accident and sends SMS alerts to
personalized emergency contacts.
Intelligent Transport Management System (iTrams)
iTrams works with various vehicle platforms - commercial
vehicles, passenger cars, 2 wheelers. It also provides
integrated data analytics to enable better efficiency and offers
insights into vehicle performance, maintenance and driving

In March 2014, 45.5% of new car registrations had DAB as
standard (212,000), up 41% from March 2013 (144,000).
This steady growth reflects the ongoing support for digital
radio from vehicle manufacturers and means we are on track
for 50% of new cars coming with DAB digital radio in the
second half of 2014.
We expect a further step change when more new models get
DAB as standard in Q1 next year and leading vehicle
manufacturers who are yet to fit DAB as standard start
introducing DAB across their range.
Kia announced this week that DAB will be offered as standard
on their Kia Soul model.
A major two-year programme of DAB coverage build out is
now underway which includes doubling the number of local
DAB transmitters (around 200 new transmitters) to get local
DAB to FM equivalence, over 162 new transmitters for the
BBC national network to expand it from 94% population
coverage to 97%, and more transmitters for the national
commercial network, Digital One.
This build-out programme will also focus on the UK’s major
road network and the local DAB expansion alone will bring
6,700km of roads in to DAB coverage.
UK: 45% of new cars come with
DAB as standard
Figures released by CAP and the SMMT which
show that in Q1 2014, 45.2% of new cars sold in
the UK came with DAB digital radio as standard,
up from 42.8% in Q4 2013.

Japan: Honda to demo Driving Support System on public roads
Honda has announced plans to begin public road demonstration testing of its driving support system in
April 2014, utilizing traffic signal information.
The demonstration testing will be conducted in Utsunomiya
City, Tochigi Prefecture in Japan in collaboration with the
Tochigi Prefectural Police and UTMS Society of Japan, as part
of research and development of the Universal Traffic
Management System (UTMS) in which Honda has been
participating.
This large-scale and long-term public road testing will help
Honda verify the overall functionality and effectiveness of the
system as the final stage of verification toward putting the
system into practical use.
The driving support system utilizing traffic signal information
is designed to support smooth driving at signalized
intersections by using traffic signal information obtained
through infra-red beacons placed on the side of roads as well
as location and velocity information of the vehicle itself. When
the system senses that the vehicle will be able to drive through
an upcoming signalized intersection with a green traffic light,
the recommended speed will be shown on the vehicle’s on-
board display.
As long as the driver maintains the recommended speed, the
vehicle will be able to drive smoothly through the intersection.
On the other hand, when the system senses that the driver will
need to stop at an intersection due to a red traffic light, the on-
board display will inform the driver to step off from the
accelerator pedal. By following the advice, the driver can make
an early start on deceleration.
Moreover, while waiting for the traffic light to turn green, the
remaining red-light time will be displayed to prevent a delay in
resuming driving. Through these driving supports, the amount
of unnecessary acceleration and/or deceleration will be
reduced while driving through signalized intersections. As a
result, prevention of traffic accidents and improvement of
practical fuel economy are expected.
For this demonstration testing, five routes in Utsunomiya City
and its suburban areas will be used and approximately 100
vehicles, mainly vehicles that Honda associates use on these
routes for commuting, will be equipped with an on-board
device that supports the driving support system.
The testing will last approximately one year starting from
April 2014, and verify:
1) changes in vehicle behavior that have an impact on traffic
safety such as sudden acceleration and deceleration,
2) effectiveness in CO2 emissions reduction and fuel economy
improvement, and
3) an impact on traffic flow. Honda will utilize verification
results to further advance its research and strive to
commercialize the driving support system.

The AAM says: the government has stepped forward as a
strong advocate for cameras on cars, and this action helps
pave the way for using cameras in other ways on vehicles.
Automakers already provide rearview cameras, a driver-assist
technology, as a standard or optional feature on two-thirds of
the nation’s 50 top-selling vehicles. Additionally, automakers
are offering about two dozen other driver-assist technologies
like lane-keeping assist and automatic high beam control on
sale today. These are exciting new innovations, but we know
our customers have their own preferences among new
technologies. It is one of our core beliefs that consumers
should be in the driver’s seat when choosing which
technologies they want to purchase.
The Alliance is petitioning NHTSA to allow automakers to use
cameras as an option to the conventional side-view and
rearview mirrors. Today’s mirrors provide a robust and simple
means to view the surrounding areas of a vehicle. Cameras will
open opportunities for additional design flexibility and
innovation. This idea has been in development since the
1990s, when the U.S. Department of Energy partnered with
automakers to produce an energy-efficient concept car with
cameras instead of side-view mirrors.
US: Carmakers lobby NHTSA so they can replace all mirrors with cameras
The US Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers is using the NHTSA decision to require rear-view cameras to
lobby to be allowed to replace side mirrorswith cameras to reduce fuel consumption and noise.

China: Geely and Chang’An
choose HARMAN for in-car
infotainment
HARMAN says it has finalized agreements with
two leading domestic automakers in China to
feature the Company’s infotainment systems.
These multi-million dollar contracts have helped build
HARMAN’s backlog of awarded global automotive business to
over US$19 billion.
Chang’An
HARMAN will work with Chinese auto manufacturer
Chang’An Motors to develop a premium infotainment system
for its upcoming Raeton midsize sedan and Cinturx brand. The
two companies will work closely together to develop a system
that will bring added connectivity and functionality to the
vehicle with MirrorLink integration as well as voice
recognition and text-to-speech technology. HARMAN
currently supplies premium branded audio solutions to
Chang’An, and this agreement now extends the relationship to
infotainment. Both vehicles featuring HARMAN infotainment
will debut in the Chinese market in June 2015.
Geely
Geely Motors, a leading Chinese automaker and parent
company of Volvo Cars, and HARMAN have worked together
since 2011 to bring premium infotainment to the Chinese
market. Now, this new award will extend the partnership to
bring HARMAN infotainment into the automaker’s new
midsize sedans. With voice recognition technology, available
in Chinese and English, the system will allow the driver to keep
his or her eyes on the road while accessing navigation, audio,
and incoming telephone calls. Through MirrorLink
connectivity, the infotainment system will bring more
applications into the vehicle by integrating with driver and
passenger smartphones. HARMAN infotainment will be
available for Geely’s vehicles in October 2015.
China: Tsinghua University and
HARMAN to build automotive lab
HARMAN has entered into an agreement with
China’s Tsinghua University to establish a new
joint research laboratory focused on creating
disruptive innovations for future vehicles.
Based in Beijing, the HARMAN-Tsinghua Automotive
Innovation joint lab will focus on both technical and business
considerations of the connected car, and ways to make cars
more productive, intelligent, immersive, and safe. Among the
initial joint research topics, the HARMAN-Tsinghua
Automotive Innovation lab will conduct research into the
Chinese and global automotive market of the future,
examining topics such as strategic market analysis, innovation
in future infotainment technologies, and the intelligent use of
audio technologies.
Tsinghua University is consistently regarded as one of the
most prestigious institutions in China. The university’s
Automotive Engineering Department is a leader in research,
with scientific programs focused on automotive safety, energy
conservation, environmental protection, and strategy. The
HARMAN-Tsinghua Automotive Innovation lab will work in
close cooperation with the Tsinghua Automotive Strategy
Research Institute (TASRI).
Under the initial three-year partnership, HARMAN will
provide up to 4.5 million RMB (approximately US$700,000) to
fund facilities, faculty, and student research. The new facility
will allow for joint research projects, and for HARMAN staff to
be located on-site with students and faculty.
“Trends like big data, smart connectivity, and the evolution of
the user experience will all play a role in helping make cars a
more productive environment,” said I.P. Park, Chief
Technology Officer at HARMAN. “We look forward to working
closely with Tsinghua University on applied research to
combine advanced connectivity with intelligent audio
solutions that will lead us to more immersive and enjoyable in-
car experiences while at the same time improving vehicle and
driver safety.”

AutoNavi acquired by Alibaba for $1.5 Billion
Chinese digital mapping and navigation firm AutoNavi Holdings Ltd has agreed to be acquired by e-
commerce firm Alibaba Group Holding Ltd in a deal valuing the company at about $1.5 billion.
AutoNavi said the company’s shareholders will receive $5.25
per ordinary share, or $21 per American Depositary Share.
The offer represents a premium of 4.7 percent to AutoNavi’s
closing price on the Nasdaq on Thursday.
The deal, expected to close in the third quarter, would help
Alibaba increase revenue by integrating AutoNavi’s
technology and data on location of establishments into maps,
allowing customers to access peer review of shops and
restaurants and pay for goods before arriving at a shop.
AutoNavi provides map software for Samsung smartphones as
well as to China Mobile and Google.
Alibaba, valued at around $140 billion, is expected to go public
later this year in the United States.

China: Shanghai OnStar upgrades voice and Mobile App
Shanghai OnStar introduced an upgraded voice recognition system, a new-generation mobile app and an
enhanced security service at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show.
Shanghai OnStar introduced an upgraded voice recognition
system, a new-generation mobile app and an enhanced
security service at Auto China 2014 in Beijing.
The upgraded voice recognition system includes the new
Traffic on Demand service, which makes it easier for
subscribers to obtain real-time traffic information.
The new-generation OnStar mobile app has an innovative
visual design and fast registration process that enhance
operability and connectivity.
The Vehicle Theft Alert service offers additional security and
peace of mind for subscribers.
The new Traffic on Demand service represents a
breakthrough in real-time road navigation and voice
recognition. Subscribers can obtain real-time traffic
information without having to input text. By simply pressing
the white OnStar button, they can use the traffic information
voice command to check on driving conditions on main roads,
tunnels and bridges. The Traffic on Demand service, which
increases the number of primary services offered by Shanghai
OnStar to 17, is initially supporting 22 Chinese cities. It is
updated every five minutes to ensure the accuracy of traffic
data.
In conjunction with Traffic on Demand, Shanghai OnStar also
introduced the Weather Check and Dealer Promotional
Information Query services, enhancing the level of service
provided by its voice recognition system.
The integration of smartphones and in-vehicle terminals has
become a growing trend in the onboard telematics industry.
Shanghai OnStar’s new-generation mobile app is the result of
three years of innovation and feedback from tens of
thousands of subscribers. It has an easy-to-read design, a more
intuitive page layout and a more detailed method of displaying
traffic routes to enhance operability and convenience.
The new-generation mobile app also offers a faster subscriber
registration process. Subscribers only need to verify their
vehicle’s chassis number or ID number. Vehicle owners who
are not OnStar subscribers can become potential subscribers
through the standard registration process, while potential
subscribers can become regular subscribers at any time.
A registration method using scanning and photos has been
added to the manual input method. After successfully
registering, a subscriber can use the account number and
password to log on to Shanghai OnStar’s portal. The mobile
app also has a personal center, an information display area and
a hot function shortcut area to enhance interactivity.
The mobile app is very popular. As of the end of March 2014,
Shanghai OnStar had 230,000 mobile app subscribers and the
app had been used more than 17.6 million times.
Enhanced Security Service
The new Vehicle Theft Alert service was created to help
protect Shanghai OnStar subscribers should their car be
stolen. Those who want the service can select Vehicle Theft
Alert in the Alert Notifications section of Shanghai OnStar’s
portal and enter the phone number at which they would like to
receive a theft alert. Under normal conditions, if the vehicle’s
alarm is triggered, Shanghai OnStar will contact the subscriber
by phone or text message and provide follow-up information.
This service will be initially offered for owners of selected
Cadillac models soon.

Page 4www.telematicsnews.info An SBD Information Service Telematics and infotainment Page 4 AT&T is scheduled to power Volvo’s US 2015 model year connected car solution with Sensus Connect, an embedded infotainment service. Volvo customers in the U.S. and Canada will also have access to Volvo On Call, a service allowing remote access to car functions and an emergency crash notification service. Volvo plans to enable cars with AT&T on- board for sale this summer. As a telematics leader, AT&T already provides a variety of vehicle solutions to automobile manufacturers around the world. Volvo’s solution incorporates AT&T’s Single SIM platform to provide coverage in the U.S. and Canada. The Single SIM, along with a world-class service management platform, AT&T Control Center powered by Jasper Wireless, arms Volvo with the ability to manage wireless device deployment and operations across markets with advanced diagnostic tools and smart alerting. US: AT&T to supply Volvo with Sensus connectivity Following similar deals with GM and Audi, AT&T has entered into a new multi-year agreement to enable future Volvo vehicles in the U.S. and Canada with high speed wireless connectivity. Source: AT&T UK: RAC and Quindell invest £30M in Connected Car Solutions The UK RAC motoring club and insurance and telecoms technology business Quindell have formed a joint venture creating a new business, Connected Car Solutions Limited, to distribute their telematics technology with an initial £30m investment. The two businesses have worked closely on the development of state-of-the-art telematics technology and the new joint venture company will market and distribute this technology across the UK, Europe and Canada. The RAC is a UK breakdown assistance provider and offers a range of vehicle insurance and motoring products. It has led the development of advanced telematics in the UK developing the functionality and integration with new technologies to better serve members and make their motoring experience easier, safer and more affordable. The creation of the joint venture follows a successful year of Quindell providing an outsourced RAC Accident Management service. Whilst the joint investment is called Connected Car Solutions, the business will trade as both Quindell Connected Car Solutions and RAC Connected Car Solutions. The Quindell brand will primarily be used for existing insurance relationships, and the RAC brand, which has been licensed to Connected Car Solutions, will be used primarily for fleet, and consumer relationships. Late last year Quindell signed a deal with the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) covering the provision of telematics-based services including insurance. Source: RAC
  • 5. Page 5www.telematicsnews.info An SBD Information Service Telematics and infotainment Page 5 Parrot files Euro18.4M lawsuit against Elektrobit and Audi Elektrobit (EB) says it has received information that a supplier of e.solutions, Parrot, has filed a lawsuit against e.solutions in the Tribunal de Commerce de Paris (Commercial Court Paris) seeking to collect damages in the amount of approximately EUR 18.4 million for loss of profit and reputational damage. Based on the e.solutions’ initial legal analysis the claim is without merit both in terms of the grounds and the amount of the claim. Further, based on the agreement between the parties, the Tribunal de Commerce de Paris is not a competent forum to process the dispute. e.solutions will give its response to the claim to the court in due course. The claim is based on Parrot’s allegation that e.solutions terminated the agreement entered into between e.solutions and Parrot abruptly and fraudulently, when e.solutions decided not to use Parrot’s software on a certain project. This, Parrot argues, constitutes an unjustified termination of the contract according to the French law and entitles Parrot for loss of profit on the basis of tort. Based on the current estimate, the legal proceedings will not cause any such financial obligation to e.solutions or to EB that would affect EB’s profit outlook and financial position. It is possible that, based on later information, this view may need to be reconsidered. At the worst, Parrot’s claim could result significant negative impact on e.solutions’ and EB’s profit, cash flow and financial position. e.solutions GmbH is a jointly owned company of EB’s subsidiary, Elektrobit Automotive GmbH, and Audi’s subsidiary, Audi Electronics Venture GmbH (AEV), and is currently developing infotainment software and provides systems engineering and systems integration services for Volkswagen Group car models. EB owns 51% of e.solutions GmbH and AEV 49%. Source: Elektrobit US: Updated CUE for new MY2015 Cadillac Escalade Technology is integral to the new MY2015 Cadillac Escalade’s driving experience. New and enhanced features help make what already was one of the industry’s most-connected vehicles more intuitive. CUE – Cadillac User Experience – is standard. It is an advanced system for connectivity and control, featuring state- of-the-art voice recognition with touch controls common with the world’s most popular tablets and mobile devices. The eight-inch center screen uses capacitive touch technology and gesture recognition, enabling tapping and swiping common to smartphones and tablets. The system also uses proximity sensors to activate common options and controls as the user’s hand approaches. An expanded “favorites” section offers quick access to phone contacts, navigation destinations – even digital music – in the same one-touch form common to traditional radio presets. The instrument cluster features a reconfigurable, high- resolution 12.3-inch digital driver information center display paired with Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system, with data also shown on an available, full-color head-up display on Luxury and Premium Collections. Along with vehicle systems information, the information center provides details on the audio, Bluetooth phone and navigation systems, adjustable via steering wheel controls. Enhanced connectivity includes a new Text-to-Voice feature for smartphone users with Bluetooth profile (MAP), which reads incoming texts through the vehicle’s speakers, and Siri Eyes Free for iPhone iOS 6 and iOS 7 users to enhance connectivity and convenience. Each enables voice-controlled connectivity to help keep phones in pockets and hands on the wheel. Additionally, OnStar’s new 4G LTE connection and available Wi-Fi hotspot makes Escalade a mobile hub, providing easier access to apps and services that require a high-speed data connection. The vehicle employs an “always on” wireless connection, which is not reliant on a brought-in mobile device. The OnStar 4G LTE connection arrives later in the model year. Source: Cadillac
  • 6. Page 6www.telematicsnews.info An SBD Information Service Telematics and infotainment Page 6 Telematics News (TN): Streetline was in the news recently after announcing it has released the ParkerData Availability API. Can you give us some insight into how this could be used for in-car navigation systems or smartphone apps? Streetline: The ParkerData Availability API can be used in a number of ways: powering websites, mobile applications, dynamic signage, in-car navigation systems, to name a few. Just as some navigation systems and mapping services show an overlay of traffic information or “points of Interest,” the ParkerData Availability API can act as a real-time layer to indicate available parking. We at Streetline see parking as an ingredient. We have developed our own suite of applications including Parker for consumer guidance and ParkerMap for merchant website use, but we believe getting the data out through as many channels as possible is how real change and improvement will be achieved. Now, with the data being integrated beyond Streetline products, we hope to see these benefits multiply as we work to create a truly “smart” city, starting with parking. TN: Which companies are already using the Streetline parking information? What services have been developed based on this data? The Streetline Smart Parking Platform is live in over 40 locations (cities, universities, corporate campuses, transit authorities) across the U.S. and Europe. The Streetline system powers a number of applications including: Parker, Streetline’s leading consumer guidance application for motorists; ParkerMap, Streetline’s embeddable map widget that merchants can use on their website to display nearby parking availability; and ParkSight, Streetline’s real-time and historical data and analytics tool for customers (cities, universities, etc.) that enables parking providers to understand true utilization of parking assets and make critical policy and pricing changes to optimize efficient use of resources. TN: How do you collect your parking data? What coverage do you have? Currently, data capture is achieved through Streetline’s in-ground sensors and through counting equipment like gates and loops, supplied by third party vendors. The sensors use a combination of sensing types to determine occupancy. That occupancy information is then sent to our backend to power our suite of applications. Our loop and gate partners provide us with an API to capture occupancy information in off-street facilities, data that also feeds into our backend to populate the Streetline application suite. We are encouraged by the momentum in the smart parking and smart city spaces and are constantly researching and assessing the viability of other sensing types and ways of data capture. Streetline also has an off-street directory of more than 25,000 off-street facilities. Each record contains important location and policy information such as address, pricing, hours of operation, special use spaces (EV, HCP, oversized). Combined with the real-time availability from sensors and counting equipment, the off-street database powers Parker, ParkerMap, and ParkerData. Streetline has nearly 40 real-time customers with the largest sensor deployment in the city of Los Angeles with 8,000 sensors. The U.S. houses the majority of Streetline’s customer base, however, interest and adoption in Europe and South America continues to grow with deployments already in Manchester and Birmingham in the UK, Braunschweig in Germany, and Barcelona in Spain. EXCLUSIVE: Carmakers want parking services and Streetline has the data Asdrubal Pichardo, Streetline Managing Director for EMEA and APAC, talks parking data with Telematics News. Asdrúbal Pichardo Managing Director EMEA & APAC TN: A couple of years ago, Streetline announced an agreement with Siemens covering parking management and data collection. Could you give an update on the current status of this project? Streetline has a long-standing and valued relationship with Siemens, who handles the majority of the physical installation of Streetline sensors and network equipment across our varied deployments. It is partners like Siemens that help us to rollout deployments efficiently and to expand our customer base. In addition to Siemens, Streetline partners with Citi, Cisco, IBM, Orange, Telefónica, and Xerox, among others. We believe that our strong partner ecosystem is vital to our growth and health as a company. TN: What does the future hold for Streetline? Are there plans to expand geographically, or to offer other information services in addition to parking data? In 2013, the number of real-time customers doubled when compared to the previous year—we intend to maintain this growth and solidify a stronger international presence both in EMEA and South America. Streetline believes in the power of innovation and information to transform our cities into communicative, efficient systems– from a reduced environmental footprint to more efficient deployment of resources. The beauty of the Streetline platform is the ability to add additional sensing types, like sound level and road surface temperature detection, without the need for supplemental hardware or infrastructure. Though parking will remain Streetline’s core, we have just the scratched the surface on additional smart city sensing and we are excited at its immense potential. Furthermore, the momentum of the Connected Car prompts the accelerated growth and importance of parking data as a key component to its success. We envision smart parking solutions will transform journey planning from fragmented, incomplete systems, to a full end-to-end solution that will redefine the way people live and work, revolutionize mobility, reduce environmental impact, and improve quality of life.

The 17 inch touchscreen puts rich content at the fingertips of drivers and passengers, seamlessly integrating media, navigation, communications, cabin controls and vehicle data. TN: What business model is Tesla using? Is it paying Telefonica a one off fee to connect the car for its lifetime? Or do drivers have to pay an annual subscription? Can already existing Telefonica customers use their current phone data plan for their car servcies? It is a multi-year, multi-country agreement. Connectivity is free to the driver. In its Q4 shareholder’s letter Tesla said: “To further enhance the driver experience, new Model S customers will now receive free data connectivity and Internet radio for four years. As an added benefit to our existing Model S customers, the free four year period starts on January 1, 2014. To be fair to all, in rare cases a customer may be charged for extreme data use.” TN: Last year, Telefonica was very active in the telematics-based insurance market with services launched in Germany (Sparkassen) and Spain (Generali Seguros). What progress have you made in this insurance M2M space? Are there plans for other services in more European countries? As part of our mission to become a digital telco and offer market leading digital services we are exploring a number of areas, one of which is insurance telematics. We used 2013 as a year to test the telematics market and consumer eagerness consequently adjusting our value proposition and operations to meet current and future needs. This was the perfect time to test and adjust. We have also started to focus attention on the product incubation side to shape new business models and next- generation solutions. Source: NAVITEL Russia: GLONASS suffers 11- hour outage Users of satellite navigation systems around the world experienced problems last week after Russia’s GLONASS satellite positioning system was hit by a major disruption. So far, the cause of the problem is a mystery. It started around 9 p.m. on April 1, when most of the 24 satellites that make up the Glonass constellation began broadcasting erroneous data about their locations. The ability of satellite positioning receivers to provide an accurate fix is tied to the accuracy of the signal from space, so the problem immediately affected users. The U.S. Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS) was not directly affected. But many modern GPS receivers and smartphones also rely on GLONASS signals for an accurate location fix, so the Russian glitch caused problems well beyond that country’s borders. A status graph on the website of Russia’s Federal Space Agency confirmed the error impacted all Glonass satellites at some point, with the system finally returning to full health around 11 hours after the trouble began. Despite the widespread disruption, the space agency has yet to provide details about what caused it. SBD Comment ~ In addition to navigation systems, the Russian government is promoting the use of GLONASS for the ERA GLONASS eCall service. The ultimate automotive online research tool for… SBD Clients: click or scan here to access the latest Connected Car OE Services Guides The Connected Car OE Services Guide now covers 8 more regions! Since the launch of the first solutions in 2009, over 30 vehicle manufacturers (OEMs) in China have deployed telematics, mostly offering the same services and relying on similar business models. It is therefore not surprising that few (if any) OEMs can honestly claim to have successfully developed the ideal equation for offering telematics services. In fact, within this report we demonstrate that the cost/benefit equation for telematics in China is increasingly skewed in the wrong direction. The costs associated with telematics are being pushed up by expensive call centres and a tendency to rely on embedded connectivity, whilst the benefits are being kept low by conservative fitment strategies (with the exception of a few OEMs) and low re-subscription rates. SBD’s best-selling piece of Connected Car research, the Connected Car OE Services Guide, has been expanded to cover OE connected services in 8 more regions in addition to Europe, USA and China. While the Europe, USA and China editions will continue to be updated quarterly, the 8 new regional editions will be published annually. More than 95,000 customers (of which more than 11,000 in 2013 alone) have used eco:Drive, with a reduction of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere of 5,800 tonnes per year. eco:Drive Social But the innovation of eco:Drive doesn’t stop with these figures, significant though they may be: taking advantage of all its potential as well as that of modern technology, today sees the launch of “eco:Drive Social”, the international community of regular users of the application who want to share their results with others. With eco:Drive Social, you can find friends all over the world, connect with them and share your eco-friendly performance on Facebook or Twitter. All you need to do is download the app from www.fiat.com/ecodrive, connect using your Facebook or Twitter account, contact your friends, invite new ones and get followers or follow new users, sharing your activity, results and improvements with the whole community created in this way. After logging in, you’ll be able to find a series of virtual badges that certify your “good deeds” at the wheel, demonstrate your level of user interaction and record your “social ranking”. This way, users can increase their popularity both by improving their eco-performance and by sharing it on social networking sites and involving new friends. The MMI connect App also works alongside owners’ existing myAudi accounts. Key features include: Online destinations With functionality supported by Google Maps, drivers can search for a destination in advance, send that destination to their car via myAudi, and program it in the MMI Navigation system. The App also allows them to browse contacts or calendar entries for address details and send them to the car. Picture destinations With Picture destinations, drivers don’t even need an address. They can select any geo-coded picture from an existing picture album on their smartphone, or take a new picture on the spot, and send it to their car. Once in the car, drivers can browse through the photos and navigate to the destination where the photos were taken. This feature also makes it very convenient to drive to a friend or family member — friends and family simply send a geo-coded picture from their location and the App can be used to upload the image to the vehicle. Music stream When a passenger’s smartphone is connected to the MMI system over the in-car Wi-Fi, it’s possible to access thousands of web radio stations, as well as any music stored on their smartphone. Using the MMI interface, vehicle occupants can browse top stations, select from their favorite radio stations, or go through playlists on their device. For passengers, the App offers additional functionality including radio station selection by genre, topic, country, or language, as well as free- text searches and storing favorites. These features are available once the smartphone is connected to the MMI system over the available Wi-Fi. The App can also be used outside a vehicle to listen to web-radio (home, office, etc.). Car finder Thanks to Car finder, drivers can access their vehicle location through the App. When their smartphone is connected to the in-vehicle Wi-Fi, the MMI connect App makes a note of where the car is parked, allowing drivers to easily navigate back to it from wherever they might be. The Car finder feature also allows users to take a photo of where they parked, which is stored with their vehicle location, to help recall area markers, garage levels, or other important information. This steady growth reflects the ongoing support for digital radio from vehicle manufacturers and means we are on track for 50% of new cars coming with DAB digital radio in the second half of 2014. We expect a further step change when more new models get DAB as standard in Q1 next year and leading vehicle manufacturers who are yet to fit DAB as standard start introducing DAB across their range. Kia announced this week that DAB will be offered as standard on their Kia Soul model. A major two-year programme of DAB coverage build out is now underway which includes doubling the number of local DAB transmitters (around 200 new transmitters) to get local DAB to FM equivalence, over 162 new transmitters for the BBC national network to expand it from 94% population coverage to 97%, and more transmitters for the national commercial network, Digital One. This build-out programme will also focus on the UK’s major road network and the local DAB expansion alone will bring 6,700km of roads in to DAB coverage. UK: 45% of new cars come with DAB as standard Figures released by CAP and the SMMT which show that in Q1 2014, 45.2% of new cars sold in the UK came with DAB digital radio as standard, up from 42.8% in Q4 2013. Source: Digital Radio UK Fiat adds new TFT display to 500 for 2015 The MY2015 Fiat 500 vehicle line-up will include a number of interior enhancements for increased driver convenience and ease of use, including an advanced instrument panel with a 7-inch high-definition TFT (Thin Film Transistor) cluster display. The new 7-inch TFT cluster allows drivers to easily monitor data like speed, fuel level, Eco index and trip information. While on the main screen, an image of the vehicle is surrounded by information, including distance travelled, gas mileage and range. A parking screen helps drivers while moving in reverse if the vehicle is equipped with Rear Park Assist. Other screen options include a radio screen that displays information about the station selected and a telephone screen showing call information. The TFT display will be standard on the 2015 Fiat 500 Sport, Lounge, Turbo and Abarth models, and optional on the Pop. Other interior updates for 2015 include a redesigned centre console. To make it more useful for drivers, the revamped console includes a new cup holder design and an additional, conveniently located USB port that is fully functional and integrated with the radio. The 2015 Fiat 500 models will also include Bluetooth streaming audio in addition to the already standard Bluetooth phone connectivity. Source: Fiat

Page 23www.telematicsnews.info An SBD Information Service ADAS, connectivity and more Page 23 Japan: Honda to demo Driving Support System on public roads Honda has announced plans to begin public road demonstration testing of its driving support system in April 2014, utilizing traffic signal information. The demonstration testing will be conducted in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture in Japan in collaboration with the Tochigi Prefectural Police and UTMS Society of Japan, as part of research and development of the Universal Traffic Management System (UTMS) in which Honda has been participating. This large-scale and long-term public road testing will help Honda verify the overall functionality and effectiveness of the system as the final stage of verification toward putting the system into practical use. The driving support system utilizing traffic signal information is designed to support smooth driving at signalized intersections by using traffic signal information obtained through infra-red beacons placed on the side of roads as well as location and velocity information of the vehicle itself. When the system senses that the vehicle will be able to drive through an upcoming signalized intersection with a green traffic light, the recommended speed will be shown on the vehicle’s on- board display. As long as the driver maintains the recommended speed, the vehicle will be able to drive smoothly through the intersection. On the other hand, when the system senses that the driver will need to stop at an intersection due to a red traffic light, the on- board display will inform the driver to step off from the accelerator pedal. By following the advice, the driver can make an early start on deceleration. Moreover, while waiting for the traffic light to turn green, the remaining red-light time will be displayed to prevent a delay in resuming driving. Through these driving supports, the amount of unnecessary acceleration and/or deceleration will be reduced while driving through signalized intersections. As a result, prevention of traffic accidents and improvement of practical fuel economy are expected. For this demonstration testing, five routes in Utsunomiya City and its suburban areas will be used and approximately 100 vehicles, mainly vehicles that Honda associates use on these routes for commuting, will be equipped with an on-board device that supports the driving support system. The testing will last approximately one year starting from April 2014, and verify: 1) changes in vehicle behavior that have an impact on traffic safety such as sudden acceleration and deceleration, 2) effectiveness in CO2 emissions reduction and fuel economy improvement, and 3) an impact on traffic flow. Honda will utilize verification results to further advance its research and strive to commercialize the driving support system. Source: Honda The AAM says: the government has stepped forward as a strong advocate for cameras on cars, and this action helps pave the way for using cameras in other ways on vehicles. Automakers already provide rearview cameras, a driver-assist technology, as a standard or optional feature on two-thirds of the nation’s 50 top-selling vehicles. Additionally, automakers are offering about two dozen other driver-assist technologies like lane-keeping assist and automatic high beam control on sale today. These are exciting new innovations, but we know our customers have their own preferences among new technologies. It is one of our core beliefs that consumers should be in the driver’s seat when choosing which technologies they want to purchase. The Alliance is petitioning NHTSA to allow automakers to use cameras as an option to the conventional side-view and rearview mirrors. Today’s mirrors provide a robust and simple means to view the surrounding areas of a vehicle. Cameras will open opportunities for additional design flexibility and innovation. This idea has been in development since the 1990s, when the U.S. Department of Energy partnered with automakers to produce an energy-efficient concept car with cameras instead of side-view mirrors. US: Carmakers lobby NHTSA so they can replace all mirrors with cameras The US Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers is using the NHTSA decision to require rear-view cameras to lobby to be allowed to replace side mirrorswith cameras to reduce fuel consumption and noise.
