2. Origin of Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving Day is a harvest festival celebrated primarily in the United States
and Canada. He began in 1621 when the pilgrims from England to the new land
celebrated the thanksgiving for the harvest of the Plymouth Colony. At the time
the native Indians, the Wampanoag, the pilgrims attended the ceremony. The
new Americans were celebrating benevolence of God to them at a time when
over half of the pilgrims had died because of winter they have endured. Without
the help of the Indians, all would have died.
Thanksgiving is a holiday to express gratitude and appreciation to God, family
and friends.
This holiday has since moved away from its religious roots. Is celebrated on the
4th Thursday November ( U.S.A.) and on 2nd Monday of October (Canada).
3. Thanksgiving Dinner
The centerpiece of contemporary
thanksgiving is a large meal
centered around a large roasted
turkey. The majority of the dishes
in the traditional American version
of Thanksgiving dinner are made
from foods native to the New
World, as according to tradition
the Pilgrims received these foods
from the Native Americans.
Other served dishes include winter squash; yams; mashed potatoes, or
rice; dumplings; corn on the cob; deviled eggs; green beans;
sauerkraut, peas and carrots, bread rolls, cornbread, or biscuits,
rutabagas or turnips; and a salad. For dessert: apple pie, mincemeat
pie, sweet potato pie, pumpkin pie, chocolate meringue pie and pecan
pie.

4. Thanksgiving Dinner
The Turkey
Because turkey is the most common main dish of a Thanksgiving
dinner, Thanksgiving is sometimes called “turkey day.” Most
Thanksgiving turkeys are stuffed with a bread-based stuffing and
roasted. Sage is the traditional herb added to the stuffing, along
with chopped celery, carrots, and onions.
