Working Title
Cycling Away
Summary of topic
Asking the question of why people cycle from
the pros to the fanatics, to the recreational fan.
Why do it? Why spend so much money and
time? You can get exercise from far cheaper
ways. What drew you in? How does it balance
from an obsession to a hobby? Cycling can be a
painful sport, so why cycle?
Why this topic/subject
From a young age my dad got me interested in
cycling, ever since he became hooked, he spread
that to me. I know how obsessive he can be with
cycling, and I’ve met some crazy fanatics. I too
enjoy cycling especially when the weather is
nice, and a cake stop is involved. It fascinated
me why he does it and ask him, but I never
really get an answer. Why he and many others
push themselves to the limit? That’s what I want
to explore. That’s what I want to dig up in this
documentary.
What is the purpose of this project, or what is
the point of it?[you can phrase this as a point to
get across, a central argument, etc]
It captures an interest of mine that not many
people see or expect to see. Combining two of
the things that define me as a person- cycling
and filmmaking. I feel it will both fur-fill me as a
filmmaker and occupy the attention of the
audience. It will further make my filmography a
diverse and personal one. Documentary
filmmaking is a new outlet for me so this project
will help me garner new skills and expand on the
ones I already possess.
Intended audience and how are you designing
your project to appeal to that audience –
reference stylistic choices and intentions here
I want the film to be simultaneously engaging
for cycling and non-cycling fans. I want elicit
curiosity in someone who isn’t aware of cycling
culture and entertain and involve the people
who already very much apart of this culture.
Like most documentaries I’ll set the stage and
hook the non-cycling fans, almost like an
exposé.
Intended contributors [who will you interview,
talk to, etc]
My dad, an avid cycling fan very much buried
deep in obsession with cycling.

Potentially Connor Swift a professional cyclist
who recently rode in the Tour de France. He’s an
up-and-coming name. Very promising.
Mavis Evans a cyclist fanatic, she lives and
breathes cycling. She recently was working at
the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Illan Hooftman a young cyclist from Belgium
who trains every day on his bike.
Kevin Dawson ex-pro cyclist, in his 50s still going
strong. He coaches Connor Swift.
Sources for visual materials [this is photos,
footage, images, etc you intend to use on the
project – remember ALL WORK SHOULD BE
ORIGINAL or from appropriate archive sources
this means photos/footage you don’t own must
be modified to your own style and output i.e.
rotoscoping photos, etc]
YouTube if I require any archive footage maybe
to show background on Swift.
Outline structure for project [for video this
could be a sectioned breakdown with general
timing such as intro, interview, montage, etc for
Fanzine this could be page breakdowns from
pg1 to pg 12]
Not too sure yet as I have many interviewees
lined up (not all of them guaranteed) I may have
cut some of them out or touch on them for a
brief moment.
I know I need to set the stage at the beginning,
the first minute or so. Set up what cyclists do
and then drop the question WHY?
I’m still working it out- when it comes to editing,
I’m sure I’ll play around with it a bit more. I
know I’ll have developed a script and so on
before I start shooting.
How does your chosen medium/format link to
your specialism? By choosing to make a documentary over a
fanzine, it links more clearly with my specialism
of video, film production, filmmaking.
Documentary is just a genre of cinema although
it’s the one genre that operates differently in
how it's made and who is involved.
