2. Malcolm NEEDS a way to engage
the parents, students and
associate teachers to focus on
creating interest and passion in
their education and how it will
help their work situation in the
future.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Because Malcolm
knows that when
focused and caring
TIME is spent with
the student & parent
there is success.
3. Themes of
ideas .. Culture & Team Workshops:
• Pre-year event with parents & teachers
• Camp with teachers & students
• Key personality to inspire students
• Parents to run some of the education
• Incorporate team building activities
• Live in week – create bonding
• Teachers to be skilled to tackle issue
• Kids host workshops to share their trade
• End of year activity to celebrate
achievements
• Teachers given special skills to deal with
these students – their own workshops
• Invite academic students to teach peers –
visa versa
• Students set „code of conduct‟ for the year
• Create a „school‟ council where students
drive the day to day business
Environment:
• Create separate school
• Set up a drop-in centre
• Provide cool technology
• Bring trade learning back
into school e.g. carpentry
work needed
• Link all senior kids together
– doesn‟t matter what they
study
• Complete a climate survey
to check on feelings
• Make area cool & attractive
– so that other students
what to visit
• Offer evening classes rather
than day classes
• Kids responsible for the up-
keep of their school campus
– applying their skills
• Attendance & participation
= selection of studies to
attend
Leadership:
• Create mentor teacher
program
• Involve parents to coach
students
• Link parents & teachers
in teams
• Create buddy program
with other academic
students
• One teacher responsible
for end-to-end
relationship
• Program for parents
• Mentor program with
community leaders
• Support families with
mentoring
• Bring „success‟ students
to talk to current
students
• Leaders created within
student group – self
reprimand
Curriculum
• Adopt best practice – from OS
• Combine these students into other
classes – don‟t segregate
• Students review effectiveness of
education – to gain buy-in
• Send kids to other schools to report
back
• Reality program – would you
survive in real world – make it a
game
• Kids to teach teachers their trade
learning's
• Kids to teach other school students
their trade learning's
• Bring business folk to teach
opposed to real teachers
• Create semesters of schooling
Add Value:
• Pay students if they
attend
• Create a points system to
turn into technology or
holiday money
• Create rewards system
that links to their trade –
earn more certificates
• Coaching program post
studies to get job
• Job finding placement
program associated with
school – more time, more
attendance
• Reward family financially
if kids complete studies
and attend school
• Reward the „work hirer‟ if
their students come to
the school – win-win-win
4. These students
need to be part
of the
curriculum, cult
ure and
campus design.
Lets create
our own cool
campus –
make it
appealing to
attend.
It‟s got to be a
win- win-win.
Student – Parent
– School.
“What‟s in it for
me!”
What will work … narrow down my ideas …..
Establish
relationships
from the
beginning –
go on camp.
5. IDEA ONE
Create a separate
campus for these
students.
We need to make this
venue unique to the
learning styles – more
focus on looking like the
work environment.
Create separate and
focused teaching team –
so that there is more
intense interaction
opposed to multiple –
touch points.
Encourage the students to
be part of the designing so
it suits them and not the
just the teachers.
IDEA TWO
Team & Culture Building
Camp for parents,
teachers and students.
Establish the right
relationship at the right
time – at the beginning
with all stakeholders
together.
Create trust & respect by
using specific „real life‟
Activities.
The climate & culture
can be established with
all parties. The doing
and feeling can be
agreed upon.
IDEA THREE
Implement Achievement
of Curriculum Rewards
Scheme.
As in the work-place,
there has to be a win-
win scenario. If they do
their work, they receive
a reward.
These can be certificate
or cash related. For
example, extra curricula
certificate s or points for
an iPad or Phone
voucher.
The rewards can be
linked to obtaining time
away from school –
attendance =
achievement.
9. He and many other teachers
have relationships with these
specific students.
He has good
conversations, communication
and trust with each student.
He calls „a spade a spade‟.
The Do:
He feels challenged given the
curriculum & teaching
structure, student touch-points
with too many teachers & staff
and an inability to build
relationships with parents
who‟s „ego‟ get in the way.
The Feel:
I gather he thinks he
could change the
system if given the
opportunity.
He‟s had success with
a couple of students &
their parents and this
could easily increase if
he had more time,
support and had a
better relationship with
the student‟s family.
The Think:
10. Kids not academically minded, only there to
eat, they want to leave school however
parents want them to stay.
Kids come to school for three days to attend
five subjects with several „teacher‟ touch
points: one teacher manages their Trade
school day, their house-coordinator, sports
coach, Pastoral care and a separate teach
manages their „work‟ day.
During their three school days, it‟s
challenging to keep their interest „high‟,
keep them on task with work and keep
parents informed of their progress.
The Say:
