5. Director’s Welcome
The mission of the Bermuda
National Gallery covers three
overlapping areas: collections,
exhibitions and programmes, with
a focus on serving the Island’s
diverse community. While we
understand that we cannot be
everything to everyone all of
the time, we are committed to
shaping memorable experiences
that will bring readers like yourself
back to us again and again.
Our Youth Arts Council may
remember their leadership roles
in shaping activities for their
peers, while our Youth Camera
Action camp counsellors may
have fond memories of passing
along the camera skills that they
learned years prior. Our education
programmes bring young people
back to the BNG repeatedly, a
strong indicator that positive
experiences are taking place here.
My personal highlight was
a trip to Rome, Italy, where I
experienced a bespoke tour of
the Vatican Museums, which
has subsequently led to an
unprecedented opportunity for
the BNG. The exhibition we are
planning for in 2017 is, in the
words of Director Prof. Antonio
Paolucci, “a good way to start the
collaboration between our two
Museums.”
The past year was memorable.
The years ahead look exciting and
I hope that you will be inspired to
stay involved with the BNG.
Lisa Howie
Director
For some, it will be the Private
Collection exhibition series that
was a highlight of 2015. In this
new venture, we celebrated a
select few stunning artworks
that were generously loaned to
the museum for a three-week
period. It was such a pleasure to
talk about the artwork of Rodin
in the same sentence as the
BNG. For such a small place, it
is remarkable what treasures are
on Island. (See page 10 for more
details.)
For some, the Friday night Happy
Hour series that we ran through
the winter months was most
memorable. Blues, folk, funk and
jazz were a few of the genres
that enlivened the setting as an
answer to the call for more music
nights and for being open late
one night each week.
While we understand
that we cannot be
everything to everyone
all of the time, we are
committed to shaping
memorable experiences
that will bring readers
like yourself back to us
again and again.

7. Letter from the Chairman
Although we are all grateful for the
clear and positive indications that
Bermuda’s economy is emerging
from the recession, we remain
realistic that its deeply creviced
impact will take further palliative
care to correct.
In spite of this obvious challenge
as well as the need to address
costs associated with our ageing
physical infrastructure, the
Trustees of the Bermuda National
Gallery are buoyed by the
reverberating applause and overall
support we continue to enjoy
from a growing membership at
both the individual and corporate
levels.
I dedicate this 2015
Annual Report to the
impressive examples of
philanthropy for which
the BNG has been the
grateful beneficiary.
We extend very special thanks to
those who selflessly help us give
birth to our dreams - those who
support our outreach yet seek no
public acknowledgement of their
most appreciated generosity. We
thank them – recognizing that
their desire is our desire - to keep
the BNG relevant and innovating.
On behalf of the Trustees, I
reserve as always my admiration
and appreciation for our Executive
Director, Lisa Howie and her
dynamic team who remind us
each day by their passionate
application that
“…art and culture is as necessary
as water to the lives of ordinary
people”.
Gary L. Phillips OBE, JP
Chairman
This level of respect for the BNG
recognizes and celebrates a
couple of key factors without
which there simply would
not be the museum as we
know it today– the one is our
collection and the other is our
complementary programming.
I dedicate this 2015 Annual
Report to the impressive
examples of philanthropy for
which the BNG has been
the grateful beneficiary. This
began with the late Hereward
T. Watlington – 2015 Recipient
of the Bermuda Arts Council’s
Patrons Award - and continues
with the sustained interest
and unfailing support of Sir
Christopher Ondaatje.
Today, the BNG pauses to
pedestal the monumental
contributions and encouraging
involvement of the late Edgar
Humann and the Christian
Humann Foundation. We
celebrate with grateful thanks
the gift and collection of works
bequeathed by the late John
Hinson Young II and Nelga Vivian
Young and we shine a light on
Cross Currents: Impressions of
Bermuda – the collection gifted by
David L. White OBE.

8. Treasurer’s Report
A summary of the BNG financial
results are provided in the graphs
on the next page, and are based on
our audited financial results for the
12 months ending March 31, 2015.
The audited financial statements are
available from the BNG website.
The year ending March 2015 resulted
in a net cash profit of $13,803 (2014
was a loss of -$45,721) before non-
cash depreciation of fixed assets.
As seen in the pie charts, the trend
of support from individuals and
family foundations remained strong,
providing 57% of the 2015 operating
revenue (63% in 2014). However,
support from the corporate sector
may have reached the end of its six
year downward trend resulting in a
similar contribution as seen in 2014
of 31% of revenue. Since the broad
decline of business and population
in Bermuda following 2008-9, the
scale of the BNG revenues has shrunk
considerably with a very noticeable
decline in corporate support by 57%,
representing $300,000 less support in
2015 versus 2008. This has not only
impacted the BNG in the programmes
offered to our community, but has also
significantly impacted our ability to
offer more frequent exhibitions, due to
the fact that corporate sponsors held
a high value of the recognition derived
from sponsorship of key exhibitions.
The BNG staff continue to make
great efforts to highlight the important
social and intellectual impact of BNG
programmes, as well as the initiatives
of cultural organizations Island wide,
in the face of a misperception that art
is only for glamour.
As the BNG struggled to re-scale its
operations to the changing economic
reality of operating a charitable cultural
organization in Bermuda, the rally of
support of private individuals to the
BNG’s mission has been remarkable.
This trend may have plateaued this
year, however their support remains
very strong and has enabled us to
meet critical needs and to try new
initiatives which otherwise would not
have been possible. Government
grants have also declined over the
years, but have improved this year
thanks to new initiatives from Tourism.
The BNG has struggled for many
years with a lack of sustainable,
committed revenue sources.
Approximately 20% of our revenue
has been relatively stable, in the form
of membership fees, endowment
funding and sales of merchandise.
Unlike prior years, no estate
contributions were received, although
we recognize the need to promote
planned giving initiatives, as seen
further on page 12.
In 2015 we commenced charging
admission. While the impact shown
here for the 2015 financial year is only
over a 3-month period, subsequent
events inform us that admission
fees now exceed the grants that we
received previously to support the
earlier free admission policy. The
volume of visitors has not been
affected.
However, we still remain challenged
with raising over 80% of our funding
from programme grants, annual
appeals, special events and general
donations. Unlike non-profits
in many other countries, very
few donors in Bermuda provide
multi-year commitments, which
requires a sustained and repetitive
effort to maintain funding for core
programmes. Even though we are
certified for best charity practice by
the BNSC, many corporate donors
impose a very high standard for
grant applications, which requires a
commensurate effort of our senior
staff to achieve their funding support.
In the pre-2009 era of the BNG we
could afford to engage development
staff to manage the fundraising
process, but the reality of the current
environment is that the effort must
be absorbed by our senior staff and
trustees. We are grateful for their
stalwart dedication to fund raising and
managing the BNG responsibly.
Since the pre-2009 era, the BNG
has aggressively scaled back its
operations by over 40%. Following
the closure of the BNG East/ St
George’s gallery in 2014, operating
expenses have generally remained
flat over the last 3 years as there is
very little else that can be done to
reduce expenses that has not already
been implemented. Our staff deliver
all programmes and therefore, the
embedded administrative overhead is
low.
We are facing major capital investment
issues. The air-conditioning system
in one area of the BNG has been
stretched long past its useful life
and must be replaced this year and
there are elements of the gallery’s
facilities which require refurbishment
for which capital will need to be
raised. Our greatest concern is that
if the air-conditioning should fail, we
would need to close the gallery to find
alternate storage facilities for portions
of our collection. This would impact
our revenue and impair our ability to
fulfill our programming commitments
and our relevance as a National
Gallery. 2015-16 must address this
critical capital funding requirement.
We are very grateful for continued
funding from the Bermuda
Government to offset some of the
National Collection costs, and for the
substantial generosity of Catherine
Heckett, in addition to the Christian
Humann Foundation, Sir Christopher
Ondaatje, the John and Nelga Young
Endowment, Bacardi International,
and the Bank of Bermuda Foundation
during this period.

Marking Territories: A Focus on Bermuda’s Landscape
explored the various ways in which a geographical location
can be interpreted. Historically, the landscape was defined
as a particular scene, one that could be understood as a
time and place; a moment caught either realistically or more
loosely as a colourful expression. In the 21st century the
landscape has moved even closer to the foreground, in
some cases entirely outside of the frame.

14. Ways to Give
Members and friends of the Bermuda National Gallery support the
organisation in various important ways, such as touring the exhibitions,
attending lectures and events, registering young people in education
programmes. Direct financial support is equally critical. An investment in
the Bermuda National Gallery translates to the betterment of both the
organization and the Island. We hope that you will consider the various
possibilities for planning your gift to secure the future of the museum.

A Planned Gift
Since the inception of the Bermuda National Gallery, one particular
Family Foundation has made a significant annual investment
toward the general operating costs. Initially, this unrestricted gift
enabled the creation of the organization, while more recently the
gift has bolstered the balance sheet during a very difficult economic
period. Gifts like this are critical to the organisation’s ability to
fulfill the mission of serving our diverse community through an
evolving collection, innovative exhibitions, and impactful learning
programmes and partnerships. Please consider your gift.
Endowment Opportunities
A gift of any size may be made to the Endowment or the
organisation as a whole. Listed below are opportunities to name a
specific fund.
• Chair Endowment
• Bermuda Art Acquisition Endowment
• Contemporary African Diaspora Acquisition Endowment
• Collections Care Endowment
• Education Endowment
