Comparing Meiosis and Mitosis
1. Warm Up
Think of someone in your family (preferably
a sibling or parent). Do you look alike?
What’s similar and what’s different? What
do you think causes you to look different?
2. Quick Review of Mitosis
Mitosis
Type of Reproduction Asexual
Creates Everything other than sex cells
Genetically Identical
Function Cellular reproduction and general growth and repair of the
body
Number of divisions 1
Chromosome number Remains the same
4. Content Objectives
• SWBAT compare and contrast the processes of
meiosis and mitosis by completing a Venn
Diagram.
• SWBAT differentiate the phases of meiosis by
looking at images of cells during various stages
in the process.
5. Why do we need meiosis?
• It is the fundamental basis of sexual
reproduction
• It preserves/creates genetic diversity
– THINK-PAIR-SHARE: Why might this be important?
6. 6
Meiosis I: Reduction Division
Nucleus Spindle
fibers
Nuclear
envelope
Early Prophase I
(Chromosome
number doubled)
Late Prophase
I
Metaphase I
Anaphase I Telophase I
(diploid)
7. 7
Crossing-over multiplies the already huge number
of different gamete types produced by
independent assortment
Crossing-Over
8. Meiosis
Meiosis
Type of Reproduction Sexual
Creates Sex cells only
Genetically Different
Function Genetic diversity through sexual reproduction.
Number of divisions 2
Chromosome number Reduced by half
9. Find the Order of Meiosis…BUT
first: Mitosis
Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase
10.
11. Card Game Instructions
• With a partner, find the phase name card and
match it with the phase picture
• Work together to come up with an
explanation/description of what is going on in
each phase
• Write your explanation on the front of the name
card
• Once you are finished, tape or glue your cards
onto the final template I handed out and turn it
in
• Begin working on your Compare/Contrast
worksheet INDIVIDUALLY once you are done.
