Showcasing the
opportunities for mass
adoption of NFC

By: Thomas Igou

Welcome to NFC Symposium 2014
Believe. Create. Push

The motto for this year’s conference calls for action. We have been optimistic for years.
We have been filled with expectations for long. We have seen great trials and success
stories. We have been talking about revolution. But year after year we are still waiting
for the real take-off. We need actions to create awareness, experience and engagement.
Three things that are crucial for success.
NFC Symposium, now third year running,
is the leading Nordic NFC platform where
all key stakeholders of the ecosystem including Banks, MNOs, Transport operators, Retailers, TSMs and many others
– gather to discuss the latest developments and future business opportunities.
Our goal remains the same: to drive the
fast adoption of NFC. But how do we
achieve it, really?

This year, we will go beyond showcasing
successful trials and discussing models
of co-operation. What we need now is
a real trigger. Last year we agreed that
customer adoption is the key. But to
achieve that we need to get retailers engaged first. In 2014, we will put an extra
focus on the needs of the retail industry,
address their concerns and help them
refine their strategies.

Insight-filled discussions, plenty of
networking and numerous inspirational
presentations from leading companies
promise a great conference that you are
welcome to join!
Continue the conversation with me on
LinkedIn or Twitter.
Sincerely,

Peer - to - Peer meetings

Start networking
pre-event
Networking is many times one of the main interests of going to conferences. We have
understood that and put in place a system to facilitate networking between delegates.

It all starts with a request

Don’t forget your business cards

A week before the event, you will have access to our online
meeting system. From there, you will be able to see all registered
participants and send requests for private meetings.

Upon registration during the event, you will receive your nametag
as well as your personalized, printed meeting schedule, which will
let you know all the meetings you have scheduled and for which you
have been requested during the course of the conference.

All just for you

Success is a state of mind

At the venue, we will have a dedicated area for 1-to-1 meetings, away
from the frenzy of the hectic exhibition area, where you can have
more private discussions with your peers. The allocated slots are
also carefully arranged not to collide with the educational program.

The rest is all up to you. The 1-to-1 meeting is open to all delegates,
and to pre-selected partners. Meetings are on average 15 minutes
long, and to not interfere with the program, we will keep a strict time
management. Don’t forget your business cards.

Program 2014
Day 2 - 23rd January
08.00 Late Registration
08.40 Chairman Opening Remarks
n 08.45 NFC Studio: How to enable mass
adoption on mobile NFC in the Nordics?
Scandinavia has seen many NFC pilots and projects
started up over the past few years, many of which
were presented in previous editions of the NFC Symposium. However, it is quite clear that the technology has not yet taken off in the region yet. There are
several reasons for this: Apple is not NFC enabled
and is market-share leader in the Nordics; there is a
lack of public education/awareness of the technology which means early adopters have not translated
into mass adoption; complicated business models
in such a large ecosystem hinders the development
and implementation of the technology; last but not
least, the need to explore non-payment NFC opportunities will most likely attract mass adoption, and
will pave the way for NFC payment options.

+

Topics to be discussed:

•	What is a viable business model for NFC stakeholders that
creates win/win situation for all involved?
•	Nordic Market: what do we need to know about our markets
	 for successful NFC implementation?
•	Mobile vs. Cards: With such high mobile penetration, is
mobile NFC the way to go for mass adoption?
Matti Penttilä

	 banks, transport companies and retailers?

Tor Jacobsen, Managing Director, TSM Nordic

n 10.30 The power and potential of mobile NFC
NFC offers limitless opportunities across various
industries from mobile wallets, retailers, transport
organizations, access control. Although there are
different ways of using NFC, mobile is more likely the
way that consumers will use the technology and make
it mass-adopted.
Rémy Belloir, Mobile Financial Services Sales
Manager, Gemalto

+

Discussion Points:

•	How do mobile NFC payments surpass the payment experience
of a contactless payment card thanks to increased security and
interactivity brought by the mobile wallet?
•	Retail: what are the opportunities with NFC to increase
customer experience over the whole shopping cycle?

NFC Symposium 2014

NFC Symposium 2013 Post Event Report

NFC SYMPOSIUM

2013
23 - 25 January 2013, Clarion Hotel Sign, Stockholm, Sweden

Conference retrospective
In January 2013, Stockholm hosted NFC Symposium for the second time and we
were proud to attract a great mix of attendees representing 13 countries from Europe
and beyond. Coming from different stakeholder groups and holding different titles,
delegates shared a common interest to drive the fast adoption of NFC and learn
about the latest developments and implementations from across Europe. Our
board of high-level speakers not only provided key insights into the latest market
achievements, but also informed us of ground breaking and inspiring case studies.
The program included keynote presentations, interactive roundtable discussions,
three gripping panel discussions and of course lots of opportunities to network.

Conference Highlights
A number of thought-leader presentations provided key insights
into the latest developments of NFC and showcased inspiring
trials and project launches. Despite the controversies over the
future of mobile payments, it was clearly shown that NFC has
a far wider scope of possibilities than just mobile payments. NFC can already offer
pioneering solutions in many areas including transportation, access control and
culture & leisure, and when combined with social media it has been shown to be
the ultimate marketing tool of the coming years. We concluded the conference with
optimism and with the prospect of a mass adoption take-off.
Our interactive roundtable sessions
gave the opportunity to discuss some of
the key agenda themes in smaller groups
under the guidance of high-level experts.
Delegates could choose between 5 leading
topics such as: “Mobile wallets” “NFC
,
Loyalty” “Transport & Ticketing” “Mobile
,
,
marketing” and “How to reach mass adoption of NFC Services” Breaking out from
.
the plenary sessions, the roundtables offered a great opportunity to learn about
and discuss the challenges and solutions other companies have in a more intimate
setting
The program featured three gripping panel discussions
composed of leading Scandinavian and overseas
experts delving into the topics of mobile payments,
transport & ticketing and customer adoption. The
conversations explored the challenges facing NFC
deployment in different areas and provided some
excellent examples of adoption.
This year we launched the first pioneering
NFC Business Excellence workshop for
retailers. The discussion had the goal to
educate participants about the business
value of NFC in the retail industry and
show them how to create added value for
their customers through the introduction
of NFC services. A central part of the session focused on how to reach out to new
customers, raise their attention, create an added experience for them and retain
them - all with the help of NFC. A special thanks to René Batsford who joined us to
share his experience and lead this workshop.

  • 4. 4 NFC Symposium 2014 “ “ Showcasing the opportunities for mass adoption of NFC By: Thomas Igou Welcome to NFC Symposium 2014 Believe. Create. Push The motto for this year’s conference calls for action. We have been optimistic for years. We have been filled with expectations for long. We have seen great trials and success stories. We have been talking about revolution. But year after year we are still waiting for the real take-off. We need actions to create awareness, experience and engagement. Three things that are crucial for success. NFC Symposium, now third year running, is the leading Nordic NFC platform where all key stakeholders of the ecosystem including Banks, MNOs, Transport operators, Retailers, TSMs and many others – gather to discuss the latest developments and future business opportunities. Our goal remains the same: to drive the fast adoption of NFC. But how do we achieve it, really? This year, we will go beyond showcasing successful trials and discussing models of co-operation. What we need now is a real trigger. Last year we agreed that customer adoption is the key. But to achieve that we need to get retailers engaged first. In 2014, we will put an extra focus on the needs of the retail industry, address their concerns and help them refine their strategies. Insight-filled discussions, plenty of networking and numerous inspirational presentations from leading companies promise a great conference that you are welcome to join! • 5. NFC Symposium 2014 5 Peer - to - Peer meetings Start networking pre-event Networking is many times one of the main interests of going to conferences. We have understood that and put in place a system to facilitate networking between delegates. It all starts with a request Don’t forget your business cards A week before the event, you will have access to our online meeting system. From there, you will be able to see all registered participants and send requests for private meetings. Upon registration during the event, you will receive your nametag as well as your personalized, printed meeting schedule, which will let you know all the meetings you have scheduled and for which you have been requested during the course of the conference. All just for you Success is a state of mind At the venue, we will have a dedicated area for 1-to-1 meetings, away from the frenzy of the hectic exhibition area, where you can have more private discussions with your peers. The allocated slots are also carefully arranged not to collide with the educational program. The rest is all up to you. The 1-to-1 meeting is open to all delegates, and to pre-selected partners. Meetings are on average 15 minutes long, and to not interfere with the program, we will keep a strict time management. Don’t forget your business cards.

  • 7. NFC Symposium 2014 7 Program 2014 Day 2 - 23rd January 08.00 Late Registration 08.40 Chairman Opening Remarks n 08.45 NFC Studio: How to enable mass adoption on mobile NFC in the Nordics? Scandinavia has seen many NFC pilots and projects started up over the past few years, many of which were presented in previous editions of the NFC Symposium. However, it is quite clear that the technology has not yet taken off in the region yet. There are several reasons for this: Apple is not NFC enabled and is market-share leader in the Nordics; there is a lack of public education/awareness of the technology which means early adopters have not translated into mass adoption; complicated business models in such a large ecosystem hinders the development and implementation of the technology; last but not least, the need to explore non-payment NFC opportunities will most likely attract mass adoption, and will pave the way for NFC payment options. + Topics to be discussed: • What is a viable business model for NFC stakeholders that creates win/win situation for all involved? • Nordic Market: what do we need to know about our markets for successful NFC implementation? • Mobile vs. Cards: With such high mobile penetration, is mobile NFC the way to go for mass adoption? Matti Penttilä Senior Project Manager VTT Rémy Belloir Mobile Financial Services Sales Manager Gemalto Telenor Norway n 09.30 NFC Cafe: all ideas come with a good cup of coffee. Don’t you think so? • 12. 12 NFC Symposium 2014 NFC Symposium 2013 Post Event Report NFC SYMPOSIUM 2013 23 - 25 January 2013, Clarion Hotel Sign, Stockholm, Sweden Conference retrospective In January 2013, Stockholm hosted NFC Symposium for the second time and we were proud to attract a great mix of attendees representing 13 countries from Europe and beyond. Coming from different stakeholder groups and holding different titles, delegates shared a common interest to drive the fast adoption of NFC and learn about the latest developments and implementations from across Europe. Our board of high-level speakers not only provided key insights into the latest market achievements, but also informed us of ground breaking and inspiring case studies. The program included keynote presentations, interactive roundtable discussions, three gripping panel discussions and of course lots of opportunities to network. Conference Highlights A number of thought-leader presentations provided key insights into the latest developments of NFC and showcased inspiring trials and project launches. Despite the controversies over the future of mobile payments, it was clearly shown that NFC has a far wider scope of possibilities than just mobile payments. NFC can already offer pioneering solutions in many areas including transportation, access control and culture & leisure, and when combined with social media it has been shown to be the ultimate marketing tool of the coming years. We concluded the conference with optimism and with the prospect of a mass adoption take-off. Our interactive roundtable sessions gave the opportunity to discuss some of the key agenda themes in smaller groups under the guidance of high-level experts. Delegates could choose between 5 leading topics such as: “Mobile wallets” “NFC , Loyalty” “Transport & Ticketing” “Mobile , , marketing” and “How to reach mass adoption of NFC Services” Breaking out from . the plenary sessions, the roundtables offered a great opportunity to learn about and discuss the challenges and solutions other companies have in a more intimate setting The program featured three gripping panel discussions composed of leading Scandinavian and overseas experts delving into the topics of mobile payments, transport & ticketing and customer adoption. The conversations explored the challenges facing NFC deployment in different areas and provided some excellent examples of adoption. This year we launched the first pioneering NFC Business Excellence workshop for retailers. The discussion had the goal to educate participants about the business value of NFC in the retail industry and show them how to create added value for their customers through the introduction of NFC services. A central part of the session focused on how to reach out to new customers, raise their attention, create an added experience for them and retain them - all with the help of NFC. A special thanks to René Batsford who joined us to share his experience and lead this workshop.
