Evaluation question 7
1. Looking back at your
preliminary task, what do
you feel you have learnt in
the progression from it to
the full product?
2. The preliminary task
We had to create a preliminary task at the beginning of the course
that allowed us to use the equipment in which we would use for
our final film. For the preliminary we had to use multiple shots,
angles and editing techniques to show our skills at the start of the
course. There wasn’t a specific set narrative for the film so we did a
simple narrative of ‘Do you have the money?’ which consisted of a
simple exchange of a briefcase. This task was a good learning curve
for us as we were able to practice the shots and angles that we
could use within the final film.
3. Planning
For the preliminary task we created a small set of storyboard with
minimal detail and this small use of them helped us learn how to
create them. We mainly focused on the filing aspect so we could
develop our skills in that area because then we could further
develop our production. After having a small amount of
preparation for the preliminary I knew I would have to do more
within the pre-production and planning element.
4. Planning
We used a briefcase as the symbol within our narrative as it carried
the key message of the story. For the preliminary film prop or
costume planning wasn’t essential as it was very simplistic for this
task. However, for our final film we will take careful consideration
for what props we are going to use and what costumes we will use
to furthermore create a stronger more believable narrative that will
give a visceral affect on the audience.
5. Equipment
For our preliminary task filming we used two camera to record, we
used a flip camera and a Panasonic camcorder as these were what
available for us to use. The quality of these two cameras were very
basic and helped on my decision to use a more advanced set of
filming technology for my final film. In addition to this we used a
Tripod so we could make the most out of what we were able to
film, keeping the shots steady and shooting a few additional
angles we would be unable to do hand help.
6. Software and editing
For the preliminary film we used iMovie which was very basic and
did well to create what we did but I planned to use a more
advanced software for my final film as the extra ability's it may
withhold could develop my production further. I hadn’t used
iMovie before this task and I had to search and learn the basics so I
could create the preliminary film. There was still a few more diverse
techniques to add into the film that I was unaware of but have
added into the final film.
7. Titles
The preliminary task in which we created did not have any titles
because we were focusing on the development of our filming and
camerawork skills because we were only filming under a short
simple narrative.
To create the titles for our final film with used Motion 5 to create
the credits and titles as this is an advanced Apple wear software
that we used very well to create what we did. The style of our titles
linked to both our genre conventions and narrative as the digital
affect linked the narrative and the red gave connotations of pain
and danger in which are conventions of our thriller genre.
8. Sound
In the preliminary film task, we added a non-diegetic soundtrack
and we had speech recorded in the scenes we films. We had not
experienced adding music or non-diegetic sound to a piece of
media before and we had to learn how to implement these affects.
For the final film, we will add a mass more of effects to develop our
sound further.
For our final film we added outer sounds like bird sounds into the
outside scene between John and the Chief to aurally add a
representation of there outside location. Also we added effects like
this to soften the tension before the break in equilibrium
9. Editing
We had a very basic editing process for our preliminary film as we did not have
much editing experience and we had to learn how to piece together and format a
basic sequence whilst keeping a constantly clean continuity. We followed linear
narrative for this task so our aim was to create a smooth transition continuous flow
through the duration of the short film.
For our main film we need to add a variety of more effects to develop the
production further and create a visually pleasing onscreen production. We intend to
have a visceral affect on the audience and therefore we are going to implement a
variety of different quick cutting tension building shots to build towards a
equilibrium breaking climax to empower the audience with an emotional affect
from the onscreen production.
10. Improvements
Looking back on our final film opening production there is a variety of factors in which we
would implement and also change to maximise the potential In which I believe our
production has. For example, there are shots that we would shoot from different angles and
heights to enhance the perspectives in order to add to our tense atmosphere of suspense
and to also to add an extra technical detail edge to the production.
If possible we would add to the duration to the film to again maximise the potential of the
production and its narratives capability as I felt we were quite limited in the given time cap.
One extra improvement would be using more advance equipment so we can maximise the
capability's of the platforms in which we could use to create a aesthetically pleasing
cinematography and film opening as a whole.
11. Conclusion
In conclusion, as a group we were pleased with the outcome of our
final film but we have highlighted a variety of areas in which we
could develop further. Our main film was an extreme improvement
from our preliminary film as we learnt and developed a variety
different skills that helped us to have a great outcome. Also
creating our film gave us a sense of working within a media
production team full of conflicting ideas but overall we discovered
how to work together to develop the best outcome.
