Editor’s Letter
NEW BEGINNINGS
If you are reading this, thank you. Thank you
and OMG!! I’m assuming that you have had a
quick flick through the pages of this magazine.
That you’ve ripped out the samples and dog
eared pages that you’re wanting to read. Or may-
be you are in the shops - a shop, right now and
want to know what to make of this new
young magazine in your hands.
Well. *Deep intake of breath.
In your hands you have the
result of weeks and weeks
and weeks of hard work. A
little mind baby of mine,
that took months, to
fully come into my mind,
develop and come into
fruition - with a lot of
help of friends and family.
This is Substance Magazine,
a lifestyle publication aimed
at empowering young women to
read more, look good and feel there
best. In these pages you will find a guide
map of sorts to navigate your life, from
the hairstyle on your head, the
rampant thoughts between your
ears, right down to the tips of your tastefully
enclosed toes.
My main goal was to create a safe haven, an ar-
mour, a confidante of sorts between these pages.
A sisterhood to take you through job applica-
tions and relationships, to the long but
oh-so-worth-it journey to becoming
your own best friend.
I hope for this magazine to
add to your life, to make
you more well-rounded
and societally and envi-
ronmentally aware. Ulti-
mately, I hope for you to
live a life a life of meaning
and great significance.
A life of substance.
And as you once again dive
in and pry amongst the
pages of this magazine,
all I can say is Enjoy!
I hope to see you soon.

FILM ANOMALISA: An inspirational
speaker (David Thewlis) becomes reinvigor-
ated after meeting a lively woman (Jennifer
Jason Leigh) who shakes up his mundane
existence. Directed by Charlie Kaufman
and Duke Johnson, this stop motion drama
went above and beyond our expectations.
The ediitng is so realistic that you easily fall
into the film, quickly forgetting that what
you are seeing is not not real people at all.
JUNGLE BOOK: Raised by a family of wolves since
birth, Mowgli (Neel Sethi) must leave the only home
he’s ever known when the fearsome tiger Shere Khan
(Idris Elba) unleashes his mighty roar. Guided by a
no-nonsense panther (Ben Kingsley) and a free-spir-
ited bear (Bill Murray), the young boy meets an array
of jungle animals, including a slithery python and a
smooth-talking ape. Along the way, Mowgli learns val-
uable life lessons as his epic journey of self-discovery
leads to fun and adventure.
TANGERINE: After hearing that her boyfriend/
pimp cheated on her while she was in jail, a hooker
and her best friend set out to find him and teach
him and his new lover a lesson. Directed by Sean S.
Baker, Tangerine, really stood out for its portrayal
of Trans characters and the fact that it was entirely
shot using iphones. This is a film that has done well
for itself in numberous independant film festivals
and we hope it’s audience continues to grow.
VIRUNGA: The incredible true story of a group of
brave people riskig their lives to build a better future
in a part of Africa the world’s forgotten. This docu-
mentary is a gripping expose of the realities of life in
the Congo. In the forested depths of Virunga National
Park, one of the most bio-diverse places on Earth and
home to the planet’s last remaining mountain gorillas.

TVGAME OF THRONES: For those of you have
been living under a rock for the past few years,
Game of Thrones is a fantasy drama television
series based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song
of Ice and Fire series. And Season 6 is finally
here!!! But where this season differs from the
others is that the coming ten episodes mostly
consist of original content, so even those of you
who have read the books will be right on the
edge of your seats.
THE A WORD: The A Word is a BBC drama television
series based on Yellow Peppers by Keren Margalit. The
series follows a 5-year-old boy and how his dysfunction-
al family cope with the revelation that he has autism.
The show has recieved rave reviews for the quality of the
acting and the sensitive way in which it deals with the
subject matter of autism. Its handles it respectively and
gives an honest despiction on a family coming to terms
with the diagnosis of such a condition.
UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT: Netflix’s his com-
edy series is back for a second season and we can’t wait
to bingewatch it. For those of you who have yet to tune
in, the series is about a spunky Kimmy (Ellie Kemper)
trying to reclaim her life after having been locked in an
apocolyptic bunker with a cult for 15 years. This is a really
absurd show that just hits all the right spots.
DEUTSCHLAND 83: In a divided Germany in 1983, naive
24-year-old East German soldier Martin Rauch is pulled from
his benign post as a border guard and given a new assignment:
undercover spy for the Stasi foreign service in West Germany.
Hiding in plain sight as Moritz Stamm in the West German
army, Rauch must gather NATO military secrets. As he veers
between father figures, love interests, and East and West Germa-
ny, nothing is quite what it seems and everyone he encounters is
harboring secrets, both political and personal.

Alessia Cara - Know It All:
Since being discvovered on
YouTube, the 19 year old Toronto
singer has been at the centre of a
perfect musical storm. Craftfully
laying bear the teenaged anxieties
in her day to day life, Know It All
is one of the most heartfelt and
relateable albums we have come
across.
Jack Garratt - Phase: The
British Singer-Songwriter has
been making wakes in the mu-
sic scene for quite some time
and it appears that his moment
has finally come. Garratt’s rich
voice and soulful tone have got
us playing Phases on repeat. We
cannot wait to see what else he
comes up with.
Beyoncé - Lemonade: On April 23rd 2016, Queen B gave her fans
life by dropping her sixth studio album in her now signature, visual
format and the crowd has not stopped cheering since. This album
chronicles the trials and tribulations of a marriage and is an ode to black
women and the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Not usually one to air her
dirty laundry, Lemonade’s honest revelations have helped Beyonce break
records, being the first artists ever to have six albums debut at numer 1.

You have most likely been made aware of this
current political situation, at least half a dozen
times in the last month. On Thursday 23rd June
2016, we as a nation are partaking in a referen-
dum asking the question, Should the United
Kingdom remain a member of the European
Union or leave the European Union? In the
run up to the election there have been countless
vigorous campaigns for and against Britain’s exit
from the EU.With all those opinions out there,
going up and in the air and on the internet at a
mile a minute, it can be hard to keep up. The goal
of this article is to
declutter the mess of
things you may have
read, seen or heard
and report them
back to you, answer-
ing the questions you
so desperately want
to know.
What brought
this all on?
David Cameron, fol-
lowing the Conserv-
ative Party’s election
victory last year and under pressure from Eurocen-
tric backbenchers, from his own party, activated a
manifesto pledge to hold an in/out referendum on
Britain’s membership of the European Union by the
end of 2017. At the time, he was also influenced by
the growing popularity of the Ukip party and now
appears desperate to secure Britain’s place in the
EU, having embarked on a tour of EU capitals as he
sought to renegotiate Britain’s terms of membership,
which concluded at a summit in February. Present-
ing the result as a victory, he vowed to campaign
with his “heart and soul” to keep Britain inside a “re-
formed” EU, but several members of his own Cabinet
are campaigning for a British exit – or Brexit.
Arguments For Brexit:
GOODS TRADE – It is in the interest of both the EU
and the UK to continue with full access to the single
market.
SERVICE TRADE – The UK is constantly fighting
EU regulation that could disadvantage the City
of London when it could be a successful off shore
financial centre like Switzerland or Singapore.
CAPITAL MOBILITY – Additional restrictions of
capital mobility are not in the interest of the UK or
the EU. And the UK will remain an extremely com-
petitive economy to attract foreign investment.
LABOUR MOBIL-
ITY – Immigration
has grown faster than
infrastructure, putting
a strain on public
services. Exit would
allow the UK to
‘cherry-pick’ the best
possible global talent.
BUDGET IMPLICA-
TIONS – Outside the
EU, the UK would not
need to pay £10bn net
contributions to the EU budget.
Arguments Against Brexit:
GOODS TRADE – From the outside the EU, the UK
would have to conform to EU product rules and
have no influence in setting them.
SERVICE TRADE – UK based financial services
would lose their ‘single passport’ to operate in EU
markets. Also Euro-area institutions are trying to
bring more Euro-dominated trading and settlement
within the Eurozone. Outside the EU the UK would
find it harder to prevent this.
17
Substance Magazine.indd 17 06/05/2016 10:16:52
Features
CAPITAL MOBILITY – The UK risks losing
inward foreign direct investment from non-EU
countries as it will no longer be a platform to access
the EU.
LABOUR MOBILITY – Inward Migration helps
with skills shortages and a shrinking domestic
workforce. Also studies show no evidence that immi-
grants take jobs from UK-born workers.
BUDGET IMPLICATIONS – The UK’s £10bn
contribution to the EU budget is just 0.6% of our
GDP and the indirect benefits we receive from this,
though intangible, are large.
Who can vote?
You can vote if you
are 18 or over on 23
June 2016 and are:
• A British or Irish
citizen living in the
UK, or
•A Commonwealth
citizen living in the
UK who has leave to
remain in the UK or
who does not require
leave to remain in the
UK
•A British citizen
living overseas who has been registered to vote in the
UK in the last 15 years
•An Irish citizen living overseas who was born in
Northern Ireland and who has been registered to
vote in Northern Ireland in the last 15 years
When is the registration deadline?
Anyone who was already registered to vote (or
recently registered) before the 18 April deadline for
the elections taking place across the UK on 5 May
will also be registered to vote at the EU Referendum
and will be able to cast their vote. You do not need to
re-register.
If your circumstances change, for example you
move home between now and the EU Referendum
registration deadline on 7 June, then you will need to
re-register at your new property.
How can I vote?
1. At your polling station in person
Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on
Thursday 23 June 2016.
2. By post
To apply to vote by post, you will need to complete a
postal vote application form. Once you have com-
pleted and signed your application form, send it to
your local electoral registration office to arrive by
5pm on 8 June 2016. You will receive your ballot
paper by post.
3. By proxy
Voting by proxy
means allowing some-
body you trust to
vote on your behalf.
To apply to vote by
proxy, you will need
to complete a proxy
vote application form.
So there you have it.
We have briefly laid
out the facts for you,
clear and simple.
Whether we as a nation leave or stay in the EU is
down to you John and Joanna Q. Public. Now all
you need to do is read and read some more, to really
make up your mind about which particular way you
want to vote; register to do so and then get out there
and cast your precious vote.
As for how it’s all going to turn out? I guess we’ll just
have to wait and see.

F
eminism is something I re-
member being vaguely aware
of. It was a word that was often
tossed around, as I went to a
an all-girls Grammar School,
but never quite felt related to
me. It was for other people. It was for other,
women. White women. Because Feminism,
as it was when I first encountered it, didn’t
include me or people like me - at least not
that I could see. It didn’t include my cul-
ture nor those of the people that existed in
the world around me. It was alien to me
and so I let the concept swim around my
mind, pushing it back and out of the way,
near forgotten, to focus on more pressing
teenaged matters at hand - until it was that I
came across this woman and I came across
her book.
We should all be feminists. It is a very
simple statement. So concise and full and
of rich and heartfelt meaning that I’m
ashamed to say I was entirely ignorant to,
outside the context of Beyoncé and her
song ‘Flawless’ - in which she plays a clip of
Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie’s now infa-
mous TedxEuston speech.
There is something so refreshing about the
simple way, in which she explains feminism
that garners a certain reach for me, that ac-
ademic writing never could. Papers on fem-
inism were always cold, and hard to under-
stand and thus made me feel as though they
weren’t meant for me. Adichie wraps her
views on feminism in a story entrenched in
her childhood and day to day life, in ever so
22
Substance Magazine.indd 22 06/05/2016 10:16:55
Features
relatable ways.
There are the times when she too was
finding her own understanding of what it
meant to be a feminist given the negative
connotations of the word, even going so far
as to describing herself as a ‘Happy African
Feminist Who Does Not Hate Men And
Who Likes To Wear Lip Gloss And High
Heels And Not For Men.’
It unearths small day to
day situations in which
women are made to feel
less then, the discrepan-
cies in how we raise our
children and points the
amazing fact that while
males and females are
biologically different,
and ‘men in general are
physically stronger… The
person more qualified to
lead is not the physical-
ly stronger person. It is
more the more intelligent,
the more knowledgeable,
the more creative, more
innovative. And there are
no hormones for those attributes,’. And
this is a message that definitely needs to be
heard.
In her description of life from Lagos to
the cities of America, through to the hard
work of her grandmother, this book, this
take, this simple proclamation of femi-
nism, included me. Black women so often
feel as though we are fighting a war on two
fronts, often being slighted for our race as
well as our gender. And for the most part
in recent years we have fought more for the
concerns of our race than for the advance-
ment of womankind. And so many women
of colour feel as though we have been left
behind or not ininvited into the discussion
at all. There is often the image conjured,
of white feminists break-
ing the glass ceiling and
climbing the ladder and
forgetting to pass it back
down. It appears that is
no longer the case.
This speech allowed me
to open up a discussion
with, not only other
women of colour, but
white women. And of
course my Kenyan qua-
si-traditional, business
woman mother, whose
father had two wives and
twenty children and felt
entitled to them all.
And while we may disagree - my mother
approaching with scepticism, what she be-
lieved to be a woman coloured by a bitter
Nigerian bias - regardless I am very aware
of who I am and who my mother raised me
to be. And that is, in no uncertain terms,
a black woman, an empowered woman, a
strong and sturdy woman. A Feminist.

Mind , Body & Soul
Adwoa Aboah has lived a lot in her short 23 years
of life. She has experienced incredible highs and the
most hauntingly tragic of lows and yet manages to
talk of both with ease. As though surviving wasn’t
enough, Adwoa is on a mission to use her experienc-
es to help women open up and talk about theirs. A
problem shared is a problem halved after all.
From the outside it would seem that the 23-year-old
model has led a very charmed life. She appears to be,
by her own admission, intimidating - suffering from
the oh so popular, ‘Resting Bitch Face’. Adwoa is vis-
ually striking. She has a caramel freckled face, high
cheekbones and matching hair which she often cuts
short. She comes from a well to do Ghanaian family,
she went to posh boarding schools, and was scouted
as a model from a young age. Uncomfortable in her
appearance at school, she was transformed into a
successful working model, the very stuff of dreams.
The reality however is not such a fairy tale. Like
most everyone she too was burdened with her own
insecurities, spending her youth wanting to be
someone else. Like ‘all the other girls. Blonde, white,
blue eyed, sexy. All the boys fancied them.’ She felt
like an outsider. When she had braids, ‘everyone
had straight hair’. When she finally got straight hair,
it felt weird and alien to her. She wore hats for two
years almost continuously, she was so embarrassed
of her own hair. Lost, without a support system, un-
der the heavy glare of the modelling world, Adwoa
made her descent into addiction.
It all happened rather quickly. She got drunk on
her 14th birthday and had her first spliff soon after,
which led her to cocaine and finally Ketamine, her
drug of choice, for its ability to numb
her. While maintaining the
façade of
being a
success-

party girl, she slowly ‘withdrew from her friends’,
stopped ‘confiding in them’. She crawled into herself,
till an
intervention from her family forced her to confront
her demons in rehab and reassess her life. That how-
ever wasn’t the end of her struggle, on completing
the programme, she overdosed almost immediately
in a halfway house. And struggled time and time
again, thereafter.
On the 3rd of October 2014 Adwoa tried to take her
own life with an overdose.
It took Adwoa a long time to piece her life back
together, but it was there in the bottom, at the rehab
facility with the other patients, with their candid
conversations and comradery she realised what she
needed to be ok. She needed to talk. To say what
was on her mind. To be heard.
The point of this story isn’t to tell you to stay
away from drugs or to not judge a book by its
cover, you shouldn’t be doing those anyway.
It’s to start a conversation, to encourage you
to look just a little bit deeper behind the sur-
face, to start a dialogue - to just talk.
That is what Gurls Talk is all about. It is
Adwoa’s baby, her project, her little char-
ity-in-the-making, with a big difference
to be made.
Openness and honesty is never a
bad thing, there is always

This is something that young people tend
to push aside, but chances are, if
you’re lucky, you will be old
one day and much in need
of funds to supplement the
meagre £155.65 a week or
£8,092 a year, that a govern-
ment pension will provide.
2. Mortgage Deposits
If you have ever thought about
your dream house, with its rustic
wooden floorboards or its Brita filter taps, you
should also be thinking about a mortagage.
Most mortages require at least a 10%
deposit, being £30,000 worth of
cash for a £300,000 home. That is
a serious amount of money to get
together so it as best to start now.
Help to Buy ISAs are perfect for
this. You can earn up to 4% interest
tax free and the state will add 25%
free cash on top of what you save.
3. Emergencies
Shit happens. You may lose your job, fall ill or down
and well, and when it does, it is best to be prepared.
An emergency fund is a chunk of money that
should contain around 3 or 4 months worth of pay
to tide you over in your difficult times. It is a great
source of piece of mind and almost a necesity for
those who work freelance jobs. It can also serve as a
F**k you fund, that allows you the stability to move
on from jobs and situations that no longer serve you
any more.
4. Education.
Education is expensive. There are the actual school
fees, on average £9,000 a year, then living costs
such as for accomodtion, food and books etc. An
undergraduate eduction can for the most part
be taken care of with student finance loans but
it can’t hurt to have a bit extra stored on the side
to tide you over, or even cover the costs of certain
things in full. A postgraduate education is also
something that people forget to think about. While it
is possible to take out more student loans, if planned
out, you could serously decrease the amount you need
to borrow, no sense needlessly adding to your exisitng
mountain of debt.
5. Cars
A car is very much a necesity nowadays. It
allows people to commute to work and for
some is even the very source of their income, so
is definitely something worth investing in. With
the average person needing 47 hours worth of
lessons at around £25 a pop, getting a liscence can
be quite costly, let alone the actual ost of a car and
insurance particularly for younger drivers.
6. Wedding
For those of you that want to get married, you
have probably thought about the kind of day you
want to have, perhaps even glanced at a few
dresses. Long gone are the days fathers’ of the
brides paying for the enitre affair, it would be
best to start putting some cash aside.

7. Children
Children are expensive. The Centre of Eco-
nomic and Business Research for insurer
Liverpool Victoria found the average
cost of raising child in the UK to be,
£230,000. This doesn’t include the
conception or aquisition of the child
through a range of fertility treatments
or adoption, if that is the avenue you
choose to go down in the future. With
the added stress and sleeplessness of rais-
ing them when they’re here, money is one thing
it would be nice to get sorted ahead of time.
8. Special Occasions
When it comes to special
occasions uch a birthdays and
holidays, spontenaity isn’t
everything. It really can’t hurt
to look at the calendar to see
wht events are coming up to
plan the costs of certain events and
gifts ahead of time.
9. Holidays
Everybody loves a good holiday.
Whether you get to leave the country
or are taking the time to explore
your own backyard. saving for
holidays is a great way to stop
from over spending.
10. Renting
For those of you that are serial renters and lead
generally mobile lives, a renting fund might be
something for you to think about. It is just a
fund to set aside the money needed for depos-
its and first or second month’s rent to make
moving the next time, a breeze particulry if
there is a delay between when you have to
pay for your next deposit and recieve
your money back from your last, if
you get it back at all.
11. Fun Stuff
Maybe there is a particular bag that you have
been eyeing or a pair of shoes, perhaps.
Whatever it is, we suggest saving up for
this particular item to stop it from eat-
ing a hole out of your budget for that
particular month. This is a great way to
halt impule purchases and buyers’ re-
morse by making sure that you still really
want something after a period of time.
12. Investment Opportunities
Getting comfortable saving your money
is a great thing as eventually you may
be in a position to make the money
that you are saving work for you.
Whether that is placing your mon-
ey in a high interest savings account,
or investing in stocks, bonds, shares
or properties. this is something to look
forwrd to. For those not quite
there yet, you could lways be
on the lookout for ways to
invest in oneself.

  • 9. Editor’s Letter NEW BEGINNINGS If you are reading this, thank you. Thank you and OMG!! I’m assuming that you have had a quick flick through the pages of this magazine. That you’ve ripped out the samples and dog eared pages that you’re wanting to read. Or may- be you are in the shops - a shop, right now and want to know what to make of this new young magazine in your hands. Well. *Deep intake of breath. In your hands you have the result of weeks and weeks and weeks of hard work. A little mind baby of mine, that took months, to fully come into my mind, develop and come into fruition - with a lot of help of friends and family. This is Substance Magazine, a lifestyle publication aimed at empowering young women to read more, look good and feel there best. In these pages you will find a guide map of sorts to navigate your life, from the hairstyle on your head, the rampant thoughts between your ears, right down to the tips of your tastefully enclosed toes. My main goal was to create a safe haven, an ar- mour, a confidante of sorts between these pages. A sisterhood to take you through job applica- tions and relationships, to the long but oh-so-worth-it journey to becoming your own best friend. I hope for this magazine to add to your life, to make you more well-rounded and societally and envi- ronmentally aware. Ulti- mately, I hope for you to live a life a life of meaning and great significance. A life of substance. And as you once again dive in and pry amongst the pages of this magazine, all I can say is Enjoy! I hope to see you soon. Her website is beautifully laid out with her signature minimalist style and is extremely well written. Would definitely recommend. STYLE LIKE U: Set up 6 years ago as an antidote to meaning- less consumption and photoshop obsessions, mother-daughter team - Elisa Goodkind and Lily Mandelbaum - really exoplore style by featur- ing the diverse stories of unapologetic individuals who are true to them- selves and comfortable in their own skin. Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton cover everything from race, gender and pop culture to squirrels in one boosy Buzzfeed show. A weekly British podcast series produced and presented by the QI Elves. • 12. Monthly Favourites FILM ANOMALISA: An inspirational speaker (David Thewlis) becomes reinvigor- ated after meeting a lively woman (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who shakes up his mundane existence. Directed by Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson, this stop motion drama went above and beyond our expectations. The ediitng is so realistic that you easily fall into the film, quickly forgetting that what you are seeing is not not real people at all. JUNGLE BOOK: Raised by a family of wolves since birth, Mowgli (Neel Sethi) must leave the only home he’s ever known when the fearsome tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba) unleashes his mighty roar. Guided by a no-nonsense panther (Ben Kingsley) and a free-spir- ited bear (Bill Murray), the young boy meets an array of jungle animals, including a slithery python and a smooth-talking ape. Along the way, Mowgli learns val- uable life lessons as his epic journey of self-discovery leads to fun and adventure. TANGERINE: After hearing that her boyfriend/ pimp cheated on her while she was in jail, a hooker and her best friend set out to find him and teach him and his new lover a lesson. Directed by Sean S. Baker, Tangerine, really stood out for its portrayal of Trans characters and the fact that it was entirely shot using iphones. This is a film that has done well for itself in numberous independant film festivals and we hope it’s audience continues to grow. VIRUNGA: The incredible true story of a group of brave people riskig their lives to build a better future in a part of Africa the world’s forgotten. This docu- mentary is a gripping expose of the realities of life in the Congo. In the forested depths of Virunga National Park, one of the most bio-diverse places on Earth and home to the planet’s last remaining mountain gorillas. 12 Substance Magazine.indd 12 06/05/2016 10:16:41
  • 13. Monthly Favourites TVGAME OF THRONES: For those of you have been living under a rock for the past few years, Game of Thrones is a fantasy drama television series based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. And Season 6 is finally here!!! But where this season differs from the others is that the coming ten episodes mostly consist of original content, so even those of you who have read the books will be right on the edge of your seats. THE A WORD: The A Word is a BBC drama television series based on Yellow Peppers by Keren Margalit. The series follows a 5-year-old boy and how his dysfunction- al family cope with the revelation that he has autism. The show has recieved rave reviews for the quality of the acting and the sensitive way in which it deals with the subject matter of autism. Its handles it respectively and gives an honest despiction on a family coming to terms with the diagnosis of such a condition. UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT: Netflix’s his com- edy series is back for a second season and we can’t wait to bingewatch it. For those of you who have yet to tune in, the series is about a spunky Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) trying to reclaim her life after having been locked in an apocolyptic bunker with a cult for 15 years. This is a really absurd show that just hits all the right spots. DEUTSCHLAND 83: In a divided Germany in 1983, naive 24-year-old East German soldier Martin Rauch is pulled from his benign post as a border guard and given a new assignment: undercover spy for the Stasi foreign service in West Germany. Hiding in plain sight as Moritz Stamm in the West German army, Rauch must gather NATO military secrets. As he veers between father figures, love interests, and East and West Germa- ny, nothing is quite what it seems and everyone he encounters is harboring secrets, both political and personal. 13 Substance Magazine.indd 13 06/05/2016 10:16:43
  • 14. Monthly Favourites MUSIC BOOKS Alessia Cara - Know It All: Since being discvovered on YouTube, the 19 year old Toronto singer has been at the centre of a perfect musical storm. Craftfully laying bear the teenaged anxieties in her day to day life, Know It All is one of the most heartfelt and relateable albums we have come across. Jack Garratt - Phase: The British Singer-Songwriter has been making wakes in the mu- sic scene for quite some time and it appears that his moment has finally come. Garratt’s rich voice and soulful tone have got us playing Phases on repeat. We cannot wait to see what else he comes up with. Beyoncé - Lemonade: On April 23rd 2016, Queen B gave her fans life by dropping her sixth studio album in her now signature, visual format and the crowd has not stopped cheering since. This album chronicles the trials and tribulations of a marriage and is an ode to black women and the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Not usually one to air her dirty laundry, Lemonade’s honest revelations have helped Beyonce break records, being the first artists ever to have six albums debut at numer 1. A fun and witty guuide on ‘How to stop spend- ing time you don’t have with people you don’t like doing things you don’t want to do’. When Kate stumbles on a string of emails from her husband to another woman, her blissful surburban life looks set to explode. Sloane Cros- ley can do no right, despite the best of intentions. Her charming essays show- case the life of a surburban girl’s adventures in the big city. With sharp, original storytelling, from getting locked out of her flat twice on the same day and being fired for baking a giant cookie in the shape of her boss’ head. This collection of essays hits the mark. 14 Substance Magazine.indd 14 06/05/2016 10:16:45

  • 17. Features You have most likely been made aware of this current political situation, at least half a dozen times in the last month. On Thursday 23rd June 2016, we as a nation are partaking in a referen- dum asking the question, Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union? In the run up to the election there have been countless vigorous campaigns for and against Britain’s exit from the EU.With all those opinions out there, going up and in the air and on the internet at a mile a minute, it can be hard to keep up. The goal of this article is to declutter the mess of things you may have read, seen or heard and report them back to you, answer- ing the questions you so desperately want to know. What brought this all on? David Cameron, fol- lowing the Conserv- ative Party’s election victory last year and under pressure from Eurocen- tric backbenchers, from his own party, activated a manifesto pledge to hold an in/out referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union by the end of 2017. At the time, he was also influenced by the growing popularity of the Ukip party and now appears desperate to secure Britain’s place in the EU, having embarked on a tour of EU capitals as he sought to renegotiate Britain’s terms of membership, which concluded at a summit in February. Present- ing the result as a victory, he vowed to campaign with his “heart and soul” to keep Britain inside a “re- formed” EU, but several members of his own Cabinet are campaigning for a British exit – or Brexit. Arguments For Brexit: GOODS TRADE – It is in the interest of both the EU and the UK to continue with full access to the single market. SERVICE TRADE – The UK is constantly fighting EU regulation that could disadvantage the City of London when it could be a successful off shore financial centre like Switzerland or Singapore. CAPITAL MOBILITY – Additional restrictions of capital mobility are not in the interest of the UK or the EU. And the UK will remain an extremely com- petitive economy to attract foreign investment. LABOUR MOBIL- ITY – Immigration has grown faster than infrastructure, putting a strain on public services. Exit would allow the UK to ‘cherry-pick’ the best possible global talent. BUDGET IMPLICA- TIONS – Outside the EU, the UK would not need to pay £10bn net contributions to the EU budget. Arguments Against Brexit: GOODS TRADE – From the outside the EU, the UK would have to conform to EU product rules and have no influence in setting them. SERVICE TRADE – UK based financial services would lose their ‘single passport’ to operate in EU markets. Also Euro-area institutions are trying to bring more Euro-dominated trading and settlement within the Eurozone. Outside the EU the UK would find it harder to prevent this. 17 Substance Magazine.indd 17 06/05/2016 10:16:52
  • 18. Features CAPITAL MOBILITY – The UK risks losing inward foreign direct investment from non-EU countries as it will no longer be a platform to access the EU. LABOUR MOBILITY – Inward Migration helps with skills shortages and a shrinking domestic workforce. Also studies show no evidence that immi- grants take jobs from UK-born workers. BUDGET IMPLICATIONS – The UK’s £10bn contribution to the EU budget is just 0.6% of our GDP and the indirect benefits we receive from this, though intangible, are large. Who can vote? • 20. Features WE SHOULD ALL BE FEMINISTS 20 What Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie’s speech has done for me. Substance Magazine.indd 20 06/05/2016 10:16:54
  • 22. Features F eminism is something I re- member being vaguely aware of. It was a word that was often tossed around, as I went to a an all-girls Grammar School, but never quite felt related to me. It was for other people. It was for other, women. White women. Because Feminism, as it was when I first encountered it, didn’t include me or people like me - at least not that I could see. It didn’t include my cul- ture nor those of the people that existed in the world around me. It was alien to me and so I let the concept swim around my mind, pushing it back and out of the way, near forgotten, to focus on more pressing teenaged matters at hand - until it was that I came across this woman and I came across her book. We should all be feminists. It is a very simple statement. So concise and full and of rich and heartfelt meaning that I’m ashamed to say I was entirely ignorant to, outside the context of Beyoncé and her song ‘Flawless’ - in which she plays a clip of Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie’s now infa- mous TedxEuston speech. There is something so refreshing about the simple way, in which she explains feminism that garners a certain reach for me, that ac- ademic writing never could. Papers on fem- inism were always cold, and hard to under- stand and thus made me feel as though they weren’t meant for me. Adichie wraps her views on feminism in a story entrenched in her childhood and day to day life, in ever so 22 Substance Magazine.indd 22 06/05/2016 10:16:55
  • 23. Features relatable ways. There are the times when she too was finding her own understanding of what it meant to be a feminist given the negative connotations of the word, even going so far as to describing herself as a ‘Happy African Feminist Who Does Not Hate Men And Who Likes To Wear Lip Gloss And High Heels And Not For Men.’ It unearths small day to day situations in which women are made to feel less then, the discrepan- cies in how we raise our children and points the amazing fact that while males and females are biologically different, and ‘men in general are physically stronger… The person more qualified to lead is not the physical- ly stronger person. It is more the more intelligent, the more knowledgeable, the more creative, more innovative. And there are no hormones for those attributes,’. And this is a message that definitely needs to be heard. In her description of life from Lagos to the cities of America, through to the hard work of her grandmother, this book, this take, this simple proclamation of femi- nism, included me. Black women so often feel as though we are fighting a war on two fronts, often being slighted for our race as well as our gender. And for the most part in recent years we have fought more for the concerns of our race than for the advance- ment of womankind. And so many women of colour feel as though we have been left behind or not ininvited into the discussion at all. There is often the image conjured, of white feminists break- ing the glass ceiling and climbing the ladder and forgetting to pass it back down. It appears that is no longer the case. This speech allowed me to open up a discussion with, not only other women of colour, but white women. And of course my Kenyan qua- si-traditional, business woman mother, whose father had two wives and twenty children and felt entitled to them all. And while we may disagree - my mother approaching with scepticism, what she be- lieved to be a woman coloured by a bitter Nigerian bias - regardless I am very aware of who I am and who my mother raised me to be. And that is, in no uncertain terms, a black woman, an empowered woman, a strong and sturdy woman. A Feminist. 23 Substance Magazine.indd 23 06/05/2016 10:16:56

  • 26. Mind , Body & Soul Adwoa Aboah has lived a lot in her short 23 years of life. She has experienced incredible highs and the most hauntingly tragic of lows and yet manages to talk of both with ease. As though surviving wasn’t enough, Adwoa is on a mission to use her experienc- es to help women open up and talk about theirs. A problem shared is a problem halved after all. From the outside it would seem that the 23-year-old model has led a very charmed life. She appears to be, by her own admission, intimidating - suffering from the oh so popular, ‘Resting Bitch Face’. Adwoa is vis- ually striking. She has a caramel freckled face, high cheekbones and matching hair which she often cuts short. She comes from a well to do Ghanaian family, she went to posh boarding schools, and was scouted as a model from a young age. Uncomfortable in her appearance at school, she was transformed into a successful working model, the very stuff of dreams. The reality however is not such a fairy tale. Like most everyone she too was burdened with her own insecurities, spending her youth wanting to be someone else. Like ‘all the other girls. Blonde, white, blue eyed, sexy. All the boys fancied them.’ She felt like an outsider. When she had braids, ‘everyone had straight hair’. When she finally got straight hair, it felt weird and alien to her. She wore hats for two years almost continuously, she was so embarrassed of her own hair. Lost, without a support system, un- der the heavy glare of the modelling world, Adwoa made her descent into addiction. It all happened rather quickly. She got drunk on her 14th birthday and had her first spliff soon after, which led her to cocaine and finally Ketamine, her drug of choice, for its ability to numb her. While maintaining the façade of being a success- ful “Opening a space within schools where we as women and girls can talk about whatever we want.” -Adwoa Aboah 66 Substance Magazine.indd 26 06/05/2016 10:17:15
  • 27. Mind , Body & Soul party girl, she slowly ‘withdrew from her friends’, stopped ‘confiding in them’. She crawled into herself, till an intervention from her family forced her to confront her demons in rehab and reassess her life. That how- ever wasn’t the end of her struggle, on completing the programme, she overdosed almost immediately in a halfway house. And struggled time and time again, thereafter. On the 3rd of October 2014 Adwoa tried to take her own life with an overdose. It took Adwoa a long time to piece her life back together, but it was there in the bottom, at the rehab facility with the other patients, with their candid conversations and comradery she realised what she needed to be ok. She needed to talk. To say what was on her mind. To be heard. The point of this story isn’t to tell you to stay away from drugs or to not judge a book by its cover, you shouldn’t be doing those anyway. It’s to start a conversation, to encourage you to look just a little bit deeper behind the sur- face, to start a dialogue - to just talk. That is what Gurls Talk is all about. It is Adwoa’s baby, her project, her little char- ity-in-the-making, with a big difference to be made. Openness and honesty is never a bad thing, there is always 67 Substance Magazine.indd 27 06/05/2016 10:17:18
  • 28. Money Money Money 13 Financial Events You May Not Have ThoughttoSaveFor We all know that saving money is impor- tant. in fact according to the 50/30/20 rule of budgeting, 20% of our pay checks should be going towards our futureseach month. Here you will find some things you could or should be saving for that may not have crossed your mind. 1. Retirement This is something that young people tend to push aside, but chances are, if you’re lucky, you will be old one day and much in need of funds to supplement the meagre £155.65 a week or £8,092 a year, that a govern- ment pension will provide. 2. Mortgage Deposits If you have ever thought about your dream house, with its rustic wooden floorboards or its Brita filter taps, you should also be thinking about a mortagage. Most mortages require at least a 10% deposit, being £30,000 worth of cash for a £300,000 home. That is a serious amount of money to get together so it as best to start now. Help to Buy ISAs are perfect for this. You can earn up to 4% interest tax free and the state will add 25% free cash on top of what you save. 3. Emergencies Shit happens. You may lose your job, fall ill or down and well, and when it does, it is best to be prepared. An emergency fund is a chunk of money that should contain around 3 or 4 months worth of pay to tide you over in your difficult times. It is a great source of piece of mind and almost a necesity for those who work freelance jobs. It can also serve as a F**k you fund, that allows you the stability to move on from jobs and situations that no longer serve you any more. 4. Education. Education is expensive. There are the actual school fees, on average £9,000 a year, then living costs such as for accomodtion, food and books etc. An undergraduate eduction can for the most part be taken care of with student finance loans but it can’t hurt to have a bit extra stored on the side to tide you over, or even cover the costs of certain things in full. A postgraduate education is also something that people forget to think about. While it is possible to take out more student loans, if planned out, you could serously decrease the amount you need to borrow, no sense needlessly adding to your exisitng mountain of debt. 5. Cars A car is very much a necesity nowadays. It allows people to commute to work and for some is even the very source of their income, so is definitely something worth investing in. With the average person needing 47 hours worth of lessons at around £25 a pop, getting a liscence can be quite costly, let alone the actual ost of a car and insurance particularly for younger drivers. 6. Wedding For those of you that want to get married, you have probably thought about the kind of day you want to have, perhaps even glanced at a few dresses. Long gone are the days fathers’ of the brides paying for the enitre affair, it would be best to start putting some cash aside. 94 Substance Magazine.indd 28 06/05/2016 10:17:19
  • 29. Money Money Money 7. Children Children are expensive. The Centre of Eco- nomic and Business Research for insurer Liverpool Victoria found the average cost of raising child in the UK to be, £230,000. This doesn’t include the conception or aquisition of the child through a range of fertility treatments or adoption, if that is the avenue you choose to go down in the future. With the added stress and sleeplessness of rais- ing them when they’re here, money is one thing it would be nice to get sorted ahead of time. 8. Special Occasions When it comes to special occasions uch a birthdays and holidays, spontenaity isn’t everything. It really can’t hurt to look at the calendar to see wht events are coming up to plan the costs of certain events and gifts ahead of time. 9. Holidays Everybody loves a good holiday. Whether you get to leave the country or are taking the time to explore your own backyard. saving for holidays is a great way to stop from over spending. 10. Renting For those of you that are serial renters and lead generally mobile lives, a renting fund might be something for you to think about. It is just a fund to set aside the money needed for depos- its and first or second month’s rent to make moving the next time, a breeze particulry if there is a delay between when you have to pay for your next deposit and recieve your money back from your last, if you get it back at all. 11. Fun Stuff Maybe there is a particular bag that you have been eyeing or a pair of shoes, perhaps. Whatever it is, we suggest saving up for this particular item to stop it from eat- ing a hole out of your budget for that particular month. This is a great way to halt impule purchases and buyers’ re- morse by making sure that you still really want something after a period of time. 12. Investment Opportunities Getting comfortable saving your money is a great thing as eventually you may be in a position to make the money that you are saving work for you. Whether that is placing your mon- ey in a high interest savings account, or investing in stocks, bonds, shares or properties. this is something to look forwrd to. For those not quite there yet, you could lways be on the lookout for ways to invest in oneself. 95 Substance Magazine.indd 29 06/05/2016 10:17:20
