4. 2 Samuel 7:8-9
8 Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my
servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, I
took you from the pasture, from following sheep,
that you should be prince over my people Israel.
9 And I have been with you wherever you went
and have cut off all your enemies from before
you. And I will make for you a great name, like
the name of the great ones of the earth.
5. What has God brought you through?
God keeps His promises &
accomplishes His will.
Everyone has a plan until they get punched
in the mouth. – Mike Tyson
6. 2 Samuel 7:10-11a
10 And I will appoint a place for my people
Israel and will plant them, so that they may
dwell in their own place and be disturbed no
more. And violent men shall afflict them no
more, as formerly, 11 from the time that I
appointed judges over my people Israel. And
I will give you rest from all your enemies.
7. How or where do you most often
seek rest?
Where do you most need rest these
days?
8. 2 Samuel 7:11b
11b Moreover, the LORD declares to you that
the LORD will make you a house.
9. 2 Samuel 7:12-13
12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie
down with your fathers, I will raise up your
offspring after you, who shall come from your
body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He
shall build a house for my name, and I will
establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
10. 2 Samuel 7:14-15
14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to
me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will
discipline him with the rod of men, with the
stripes of the sons of men, 15 but my
steadfast love will not depart from him, as I
took it from Saul, whom I put away from
before you.
11. 2 Samuel 7:16-17
16 And your house and your kingdom shall
be made sure forever before me. Your
throne shall be established forever.” 17 In
accordance with all these words, and in
accordance with all this vision, Nathan
spoke to David.

woman, and between your offspring and her
offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you
shall bruise his heal.
13. Genesis 17:6 – God’s Covenant
with Abraham
6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I
will make you into nations, and kings shall
come from you.
14. Genesis 49:10 – Jacob & His
Sons
10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
until tribute comes to him; and to him shall
be the obedience of the peoples.
15. Isaiah 9:6-7 – He is God
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the
government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name
shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of
his government and of peace there will be no end, on
the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it
and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the
LORD of hosts will do this.
16. Do you trust
Him with the
end AND the
means?
Well this day's been crazy
But everything's happened on schedule,
from the rain and the cold
To the drink that I spilled on my shirt.
'Cause You knew how You'd save me
before I fell dead in the garden,
And You knew this day
long before You made me out of dirt.
And You know the plans that You have for me
And You can't plan the end and not
plan the means
-Caedmon’s Call; Table for Two
17. 2 Samuel 7:18-19
18 Then King David went in and sat before the
LORD and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and
what is my house, that you have brought me
thus far? 19 And yet this was a small thing in
your eyes, O Lord God. You have spoken also
of your servant’s house for a great while to
come, and this is instruction for mankind, O
Lord God!
19. 2 Samuel 7:20-21
20 And what more can David say to you? For
you know your servant, O Lord God! 21
Because of your promise, and according to
your own heart, you have brought about all
this greatness, to make your servant know it.
20. Do you respond with
gratitude or pride when
looking at God’s
faithfulness?
21. The Promise for Us
1 Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he
who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and
milk without money and without price. 2 Why do you spend
your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for
that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat
what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. 3 Incline
your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I
will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast,
sure love for David.
Isaiah 55:1-3
Notas do Editor
David wants his legacy to be the temple he built for God, but God had bigger and better plans…
Read the passage…going to see today God’s covenant with David, how it points us a little closer to Christ…notice repetition of “I” and “you”…God is doing this, and this is personal…
LORD of hosts…mighty God displayed as strong and all-powerful with control over all…
I took…this is God’s doing…He has been at work this whole time
From following sheep…remember all that God has brought him through…shepherd, anointing, Goliath, being hunted by Saul, lost his best friend, civil war, lots and lots of waiting, etc…God was at work in all of this…
I have been with you = presence; I have cut off all your enemies = power
I will make for you a great name…David is only the 2nd king over Israel, and the people didn’t have a long history of devotion to the kingship…might have even been more devoted to Saul…in the eyes of the people, David is on probation…more trouble to come for David, but he can trust God’s promises and His faithfulness…
These verses are a statement about God…God keeps His promises and accomplishes His will
God is all-powerful and ever-present with His children…He is faithful to bring His promises to fruition and He always accomplishes His will.
maybe you’re still in the middle of it right now…do you trust Him to bring you through it? Do you trust that He is with you and is making a way for you even now? Have to have a right view of God to make it through those punches in the mouth…
Appoint a place = no more oppression by enemies…all through Judges, Israel has been in this cycle of disobedience, oppression by enemies, deliverance by a judge, rest in the land, return to idolatry and disobedience…they never achieved dominion over the all the land that had been promised them because they fell into disobedience and never completely drove out those pagan groups, and they reemerged later as threats to Israel…just like sin…
My people…whole story of the Bible points to Jesus…creation, fall, redemption, restoration…God with us…
Who else talks about giving us rest? Jesus! ”Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28
The rest God speaks of here is established by Him…the temptation in our trials is to trust in other things or people instead of God…
Look to good leaders, retreat into old habits like food, one more glass of wine, etc.
Instead of David building a house for God, He has purposed to do that for David…represents a family line, dynasty, etc.
As we look at the rest of this covenant, there are some events that will happen soon, and some that will happen much later…like a collapsing telescope…
Days are fulfilled…speaks again of God’s sovereignty…even David’s life is not his own, every single day has been appointed by God…
Talking about Solomon here…ultimately, Jesus will be the ultimate fulfillment…
Build a house = Solomon building the temple; ultimately Jesus building the true, everlasting temple of God in His church
For my name…I AM WHO I AM…established forever…God is eternal and sovereign…He never changes, and all that He does is ultimately for His glory
The fact that Solomon’s temple was completed (God kept His promise there), reminds us that we can trust Him to keep His promise concerning salvation and glorification through Christ…
The discipline of the Lord is an expression of his love and a statement of his position in relation to God as a son…
Love = kindness, mercy, lovingkindness…can only be given by God… steadfast = unwavering, sure, firm in purpose, fixed in direction
Repetition of “I”…this is God’s doing…like His job description for Himself towards us…
This shows us that Solomon is not the ultimate destination or fulfillment of this covenant…in fact, 1 & 2 Kings take us through the kings of Israel and we find out that every one of them is sinful and therefore can’t be the ultimate fulfillment of this covenant, which results in the collapse of the house of David and the Babylonian exile…things don’t look good, looks like the promise won’t be kept because no one can see a way out...points us again to Christ, God is the One who makes the covenant and exercises the means to keep it…READ NEXT SLIDE…
take a look back at the earlier covenants…
First hint we have of God’s plan for redemption…don’t have many details except that the serpent will eventually be defeated by a future descendant of the woman…
The picture gets a little bit clearer…the man that is coming will be born of woman, in the Jewish line of kings
Israel doesn’t have any kings at this point…in fact, it’s hundreds of years before they’ll have a king
Jacob is is giving his blessings to his 12 sons…traditionally, the oldest gets the power, etc. but he gives it to Judah…
Born of woman, line of Abraham, line of Jews, tribe of Judah and line of kings…David won’t be here for another 1000 years…during all of this time there is death, destruction, loss, disease, reign and rule of sin, etc…BUT GOD HAS PROMISED…
Our text today shows us that the One will be out of the house of David…
The One that has been promised is God Himself…this impossible-looking covenant (looks impossible because of the sin of every single person in the line of David) is made possible by God Himself…God makes the covenant and God provides the Means for keeping it…
Increase of government and of peace…remember the rest promised?
No end…will be a kingdom established forever…
Throne of David…connects Christ to this covenant and these promises that have been coming all throughout…
God is the One who will accomplish all of this!!!!!
He has promised…when things look impossible, do you still trust Him? He is a Red Sea-Parter, He makes a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert…
Understanding is not a pre-requisite for obedience…we can’t say, ”I trust You God, but surely You can’t mean ______”…
David recognizes and acknowledges that all of this is from God and for God…do we?
Recognizes God as faithful and sovereign…he is able to look back at everything that God has brought him through and know that he was brought safely through by God for God’s good purposes…
David knows that God’s hand is over him for his good…
David approached with humility that came from an intimate knowledge of the character of God as he knew it to be true from Scripture and as he had experienced it in his life…if we aren’t grounded in Scripture first, we can be tempted to interpret the “punches in the mouth” as outside of God’s control, or as some sort of punishment towards us rather than loving discipline…have to know Him through His word…
What else do we see about God?
He knows us
He keeps His promises
He is faithful…His nature never changes…
He kept His promise to David because of who He is, not because of David’s goodness…also why He still kept His promise even though all the kings were sinful until Christ…not about us!!
He reveals Himself to us through every season…the “lows” have a purpose for us in drawing us closer to Him…
STAAR scores…tempted towards pride…
The Davidic Covenant was a promise to David, but to anyone who comes to God poor in spirit (spiritual poverty before God), mourning over our sin, willing to submit to His will, hungry and thirsty for righteousness, God writes a job description for Himself towards us to bind us to Him forever with the same mercy and faithfulness that He did with David…He will be our God and we will be His people…
