With L.E.K.'s guidance, a major airline became the first in the U.S. to collect bag fees and other "ancillary revenue" such as fees for extra legroom and expedited boarding. In 2012, the major U.S. airlines earned an estimated $12.4bn from such services alone; in many cases, the innovation meant the difference between survival and insolvency.
