2. What Is Globalization?
“It is a process of interaction and integration among people, companies, and
governments of different nations.”
“A process driven by international trade and investment and aided by information
technology.”
The process by which people and goods moves easily across borders.
This process has effects on the environment, on culture, on political systems, on
economic development and prosperity, and on human physical well-being in
societies around the world.
A term implying the growth of economic, political, and cultural assimilation and
interconnectedness of a different cultures which result in the integration of people
across the globe (Gamble, et.al 2013) due to this globalization, the more we
exposed to diversity.
*DIVERSITY is the valuing of the uniqueness or differences in gender preference, color, age, religious affiliation, ethnicity,
education, social and economic status and political beliefs. It recognizes that people are unique from each other with
respect to their gender, culture, socio- economic status, educational background and ideologies.

5. Industrial globalization – development of worldwide production markets and broader access to
a range of foreign products for consumers and companies involving particularly movement of
material and goods between and within national boundaries.
Financial globalization – development of worldwide financial markets and better access to
external financing for borrowers.
Economic globalization – establishment of a global common market, based on the freedom of
exchange of goods and capital.
Political globalization – creation of international organizations to regulate the relationships
among governments and to guarantee the rights arising from social and economic globalization.
Informational globalization – increase in information flows between geographically remote
locations. (This can also be seen as a technological change related to the advent of fibre optic
communications, satellites, and increased availability of telephone and Internet.)
Cultural globalization – sharing of ideas, attitudes and values across national borders. This
sharing generally leads to an interconnectedness and interaction between peoples of diverse
cultures and ways of life. Mass media and communication technologies are the primary
instruments for cultural globalization.

10. Global Community
refers to the people or nations of the world, considered as being closely connected by
modern telecommunications and as being economically, socially, and politically
interdependent.
Global Communication
is the development and sharing of information, through verbal and non-verbal
messages, in international settings and contexts.
Local Community
is a group of interacting people sharing an environment. In human communities,
intent, belief, resources, preferences, needs, risks, and a number of other conditions
may be present and common, affecting the identity of the participants and their
degree of cohesiveness.
Local Communication
is being able to communicate with the members of your local area. It can either be in
your local language (mother tongue), or a common language that you speak within
your town.
11. Multiculturalism refers to the presence of
people with several cultures in a specific
setting. It is the co-existence of diverse
cultures, where culture includes racial,
religious, or cultural groups and is
manifested in customary behaviors ,
cultural assumptions and values, patterns
of thinking, and communicative styles.
12. CROSS-CULTURAL
Cross-cultural deals with the comparison of different cultures. In cross-cultural
communication, differences are understood and acknowledged, and can bring about
individual change, but not collective transformations. In cross-cultural societies, one
culture is often considered “the norm” and all other cultures are compared or
contrasted to the dominant culture.
(Take a look at this video about Cross Cultural Communication Workshop for Japanese and
Filipino https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULokx-TJmtE)
INTERCULTURAL
Intercultural describes communities in which there is a deep understanding and
respect for all cultures. Intercultural communication focuses on the mutual exchange
of ideas and cultural norms and the development of deep relationships. In an
intercultural society, no one is left unchanged because everyone learns from one
another and grows together.
13. Culture is a defining feature of a person’s identity, contributing to how they
see themselves and the groups with which they identify. Culture may be
broadly defined as the sum total of ways of living built up by a group of
human beings, which is transmitted from one generation to another. Every
community, cultural group or ethnic group has its own values, beliefs and
ways of living.
The observable aspects of culture such as food, clothing, celebrations,
religion and language are only part of a person’s cultural heritage. The
shared values, customs and histories characteristic of culture shape the way
a person thinks, behaves and views the world. A shared cultural heritage
bonds the members of the group together and creates a sense of belonging
through community acceptance.
14. Language is intrinsic to the expression of culture. As a means of
communicating values, beliefs and customs, it has an important social
function and fosters feelings of group identity and solidarity. It is the means by
which culture and its traditions and shared values may be conveyed and
preserved.
Language is fundamental to cultural identity. This is so for people everywhere. For Bininj, their
unique world is expressed in their language. For this reason, it is important that people keep
their own language alive.
(Kakadu National Park, Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre, NT)
As languages disappear, cultures die. The world becomes inherently a less interesting place,
but we also sacrifice raw knowledge and the intellectual achievements of millennia.
(Ken Hale, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, quoted in Davis, W. 1999.)
15.
16. What is cultural awareness?
is knowing that there are multiple different cultures –
based on religion, ethnicity, nationality, and other
factors- that have different attitudes and outlooks.
What is cultural sensitivity?
involves accepting those differences without insisting
your own culture is better , or that everyone should do
it your way (Sherman, 2018).
17. View human difference as positive and a cause for celebration;
Have a clear sense of your own ethnic, cultural, and racial identity;
Be aware that in order to learn about others, you need to understand and be prepared to
share your own culture;
Be aware of your own discomfort when you encounter differences in race, color, religion,
sexual orientation, language, and ethnicity;
Be aware of the assumptions that you hold about people of cultures different from your own;
Be aware of your stereotypes as they arise and develop personal strategies for reducing the
harm that they cause;
Be aware of how your cultural perspective influences your judgments about what appropriate,
normal, or superior behaviors, values, and communication styles are;
Accept that in cross-cultural situations, there can be uncertainty, and that uncertainty can
make you anxious. It can also mean that you do not respond quickly and take the time
needed to get more information;
Take any opportunity to put yourself in places where you can learn about differences and
create relationships; and
Understand that you will likely be perceived as a person with power and racial privilege (or the
opposite), and that you may not be seen as unbiased or as an ally.
18. What is gender sensitivity?
refers to the aim of understanding and taking account of the societal
and cultural factors involved in gender-based exclusion and
discrimination in the most diverse spheres of public and private life.
What is gender-sensitive language?
is the realization of gender equality in written and spoken language.
it is attained when women and men and those who do not conform to
the binary gender system are made visible and addressed in language
as persons of equal value, dignity, integrity, and respect.
What is political correctness?

avoid offense or disadvantage to members of particular groups in
society.

26. Everyone of us has our dream country to visit in the future, right? So let’s all have a virtual travel
of our dream country by doing some exploration online about everything we need to know before
visiting that dream country of ours in the future. And by doing that, create a PowerPoint
Presentation of all the interesting information you might find of your chosen country.
Just follow the guidelines below. Be resourceful and creative. Also don’t forget to cite your sources
at the end of your presentation.
Guidelines for the Presentation
Your presentation should have a minimum of 17 slides and a maximum of 30 slides.
Your Presentation should include the following:
Name of the country (and its location, geographic features, national flag, language, symbolism)
Tradition/customs/values (in meeting & greeting, in family, in marriage, in naming conventions,
celebrations, clothing and foods)
Belief (religious practices/rituals)
Do’s and don’ts when visiting their country (etiquette)
You may also include images, audios or videos.
