earth's equator; an imaginary circle equidistant from the celestial poles, Taiwan has indeed many
equinoctial partners : Haiti, Belize, Guatemala, eSwatini, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau,
Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Tuvalu.

EYE like Erasmus for your Entrepreneurs …
Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs Global is an exchange programme financed by the European
Union to facilitate business exchanges between European new entrepreneurs and experienced
host entrepreneurs in Canada (Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia), Israel, Singapore, South
Korea, Taiwan and the USA (NY State, California), with the help of contact points, active the
field of business support and entrepreneurship.
A host entrepreneur (HE) can benefit from fresh ideas from a motivated new entrepreneur on
his business. He/she may have specialised skills or knowledge in an area that he does not
master, which could also complement yours. He can also benefit from access to new markets,
international cooperation and potential possibilities for collaboration with business partners
abroad.
New entrepreneurs (NE), on the other hand, benefit from an experience in a small or medium-
sized enterprise in a country outside of Europe. This will ease the successful start of their
business or strengthen their new enterprise.
The exchange between the two entrepreneurs, which can last between 1-3 months, is a win-
win collaboration whereby both of entrepreneurs can also discover new markets or business
partners, as well as different ways of doing business.
The role of these contact points, also referred to as Intermediary Organisations (IOs), is to
facilitate successful relationships between the new entrepreneur and the host entrepreneur.
To this end, they promote the programme, offer support with the applications process, arrange
contacts between entrepreneurs, support the drafting of the plan for the exchange, and
provide support to entrepreneurs during the exchange. Every relationship between a new and
a host entrepreneur needs two IOs (one responsible for the NE and the other for the HE).
Abroad, the EYE Global exchange programme may spark confusing capital letters. So, I might
reuse them to invite readers to enter a new dialogue between Taiwan and the EU.
Many thanks for your attention.

Equinoctial as a cross-border projection into space
With its Green Deal, the EU needs also to shape and influence equinoctial connections.
As already mentioned, Taiwan has many equinoctial partners : Haiti, Belize, Guatemala, eSwatini, the Marshall
Islands, Nauru, Palau, Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and
Tuvalu.
Among those overseas territories and islands, Saint Lucia is part of the Windward Islands located on the
eastern edge of the Caribbean Sea. In close diplomatic relationship with Taiwan, Saint Lucia is located
between the islands of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to the south, Barbados to the southeast, and
Martinique to the north.
8
Taking its name from Lucia of Syracuse, Saint Lucia is the only state in the world to be named
after a woman.
The Europeans will then gradually try to establish themselves there, but without success. It
was France that began to establish a real colony and signed a treaty with the Kalinago in 1660.
Nevertheless, the island was throughout the 17th and 18th centuries mainly disputed
between the French and the British, who obtained control of it. complete in 1814, with the
Treaty of Paris.
Also, Saint Lucia, which was the stake of a fierce struggle between English and French
(especially for its sources of fresh water, rare in the Caribbean), is officially nicknamed the
"Helene of the West" (the Helen of the West), or "Hélène des Antilles" ("Helen of the West
Indies"), by analogy with Hélène de Troie (Helene of the East), who in Antiquity was the
subject of a fierce struggle between the various Greek and Trojan princes. This nickname,
9
officially recognized, is present in the second verse of the Lucian national anthem: Sons and
Daughters of Saint Lucia.
Martinique and the island of Saint Lucia have long flown the same flag.
The four-serpent flag flew on merchant marine vessels following a royal ordinance in 1766.

Y Combinator as a returns on a fixed point of another function
which generalizes the notion of "eigenfunctions" in computer
programs.
Y Combinator is the best startup accelerator in the world (Scribd, Reddit, Airbnb, Dropbox,
Disqus et Posterous…).
The company's accelerator program started in Boston and Mountain View, expanded to San
Francisco in 2019, and was entirely online during the COVID-19 pandemic. Forbes
characterized the company in 2012 as one of the most successful startup accelerators in
Silicon Valley.
During my Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs experience in cooperation with Taiwan, I had
the chance to be hosted within Your Carbon Holdings Inc.
11
On a daily basis, people used to call the company “Y C”.
This acronym also has many meanings in terms of connectivity and in light of Y
Combinator or similar combinations of letters. The Y combinator is one of the coolest
ideas in computer science. The Y combinator is a function that returns a fixed point of
another function. It is called a "higher order function" because it takes another function as
an argument.
YC represents for me a great inspiration for the powerful Taiwanese community both on the
West and East coasts of the US (mainly California and Massachusetts but also Arizona, NY,
Texas and other states…).

With Celtic roots, I am also fascinated by the great Taiwanese leadership running public
affairs in Boston for example, where many Irish, Breton and Celtic ancestors immigrated to.
Michelle Wu (Chinese: 吳弭; born January 14, 1985) is an American lawyer and politician
serving as the mayor of Boston, Massachusetts, since 2021. The daughter of Taiwanese
immigrants, she was the first Asian American woman to serve on the Boston City Council.
After TeherAngeles, what about TaiAngeles ?
TehrAngeles (or Little Persia) is a portmanteau deriving from the combination of Tehran, the
capital of Iran, and Los Angeles. A Persian community developed in Westwood, Los Angeles
after the Islamic Revolution of 1979 prompted thousands of Iranians to flee to the United
States. It is a shopping, eating and gathering place for the large number (estimates range
from 500,000 to 600,000) of Iranian-Americans and their descendants residing in the Los
Angeles metropolitan area which is the largest such population outside Iran. The intersection
13
of Westwood Boulevard and Wilkins Avenue was recognized by the City of Los Angeles as
Persian Square.
At 24.3% of the total Taiwanese-American population, the Taiwanese community in
Greater Los Angeles represents the largest Taiwanese community in the United States.
There is a large Taiwanese and Taiwanese American community in the Greater Los Angeles
Area. Many Taiwanese settled in the suburbs, notably Monterey Park, which eventually
became known as “Little Taipei”.
Taiwanese immigration to the United States was limited in the years before World War II, due
to Japanese rule as well as the Immigration Act of 1924, which completely barred immigration
from Asia. From World War II to 1965, a small number of students studied throughout the
United States.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC; also called Taiwan
Semiconductor) is a Taiwanese multinational semiconductor contract manufacturing and
design company. It is the world's most valuable semiconductor company, the world's largest
dedicated independent ("pure-play") semiconductor foundry, and its country's largest
company, with headquarters and main operations located in the Hsinchu Science Park in
Hsinchu. It is majority owned by foreign investors, with the central government of Taiwan as
the largest shareholder.
Founded in Taiwan in 1987 by Morris Chang, TSMC was the world's first dedicated
semiconductor foundry and has long been the leading company in its field. Most of the
leading fabless semiconductor companies such as AMD, Apple, ARM, Broadcom, Marvell,
MediaTek, Qualcomm and Nvidia, are customers of TSMC, as are emerging companies such
as Allwinner Technology, HiSilicon, Spectra7, and UNISOC.
TSMC has a global capacity of about thirteen million 300 mm-equivalent wafers per year as
of 2020 and makes chips for customers with process nodes from 2 microns to 5 nanometres.
TSMC was the first foundry to market 7-nanometre and 5-nanometre (used by the 2020
Apple A14 and M1 SoCs and the MediaTek Dimensity 8100) production capabilities, and the
first to commercialize extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology in high volume.
16
Doctor Morris Chang (born 10 July 1931) is a Taiwanese-American businessman who built
his career in the United States and subsequently in Taiwan. He is the founder, as well as
former chairman and CEO, of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
He is known as the semiconductor industry founder of Taiwan. As of October 2021, his net
worth was estimated at US$2.8 billion.
In 1986, Li Kwoh-ting, representing the Executive Yuan, invited Morris Chang to serve as the
president of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). At that time, the Taiwanese
government wanted to develop its semiconductor industry, but its high investment and high
risk nature made it difficult to find investors. Only Philips was willing to sign a joint venture
contract with Taiwan to invest 27.5% of TSMC's capital.
Since then, the company has continued to grow, albeit subject to the cycles of demand. In
2011, the company planned to increase research and development expenditures by almost
39% to NT$50 billion to fend off growing competition. The company also planned to expand
capacity by 30% in 2011 to meet strong market demand. In May 2014, TSMC's board of
directors approved capital appropriations of US$568 million to increase and improve
manufacturing capabilities after the company forecast higher than expected demand. In
17
August 2014, TSMC's board of directors approved additional capital appropriations of
US$3.05 billion.
In 2020, TSMC became the first semiconductor company in the world to sign up for the RE100
initiative, pledging to use 100% renewable energy by 2050. TSMC accounts for roughly 5% of
the energy consumption in Taiwan, even exceeding that of the capital city Taipei. This
initiative was thus expected to accelerate the transformation to renewable energy in the
country.
In November 2020, officials in Phoenix, Arizona in the United States approved TSMC's plan
to build a $12 billion chip plant in the city.
Innovation often originates as a single idea; yet it has the potential to
unimaginably transform the lives of billions of people!
I visited the TSMC Museum of Innovation. Here you can explore how TSMC and its innovative
business model accelerate innovation in integrated circuit (IC) design and product
applications. These innovations propel ICs’ pervasiveness in our modern world while
significantly improving our lives. Here too, we learn how TSMC contributes to global IC
innovation and to Taiwan’s economy.

Erasmus as a cooperation gateway among
humans, ideas and minds
I will miss Taiwan so much. I would like to share with you this inspiring report.
It is really hard for me to summarize such an insightful experience. In one word, I would
like to name what I learned as : the 'Statistics of Nature' “自然統計”.
This expression is inspired by a Chinese artist and Professor Qiu Zhijie which suggests the
struggle between the forces of fate and self-determination.
From the 'Statistics of Fortune' to the 'Statistics of Nature' “自然統計”
“The Statistics of Fortune” believed that scientific research has been inseparable from
religious activities since ancient times. There are a lot of mysterious elements entangled in
the history of science, while they often appear in the form of empirical evidence from
religious activities. Therefore, let's explore a new perspective that delve into the history of
science from profound cultural perspectives such as artificial intelligence.

From Expo 58 to the Arch of Nature : on the road to Osaka Expo
Effectively, today's youth is stuck between, on the one hand, the denial of the latest climate-
skeptics and, on the other hand, collapsologists warning us of the probable collapse of our
civilization incapable of quickly reinventing itself to face the challenges of climate change.
Expo 58, also known as the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair, was the first major World Expo
registered under BIE after World War II.
During the Dubai Expo, the Belgian pavilion was called "The Green Arch", as it combined
intensive greenery and futuristic design in solid wood. The pavilion aimed to be exemplary
in terms of sustainable development. It is an ode to a regenerative circular economy, to
biobased and geo-sourced materials, to the integration of bioclimatic rules and renewable
energies, as well as to the preservation of biodiversity and nature.
23
This means that “The Green Arch” is based on a “bridge-building”, creating an immense vault
with double curvature between its two pillars. This curvaceous vault is generated from a
universal mathematical minimum surface called "hyperbolic paraboloid". This paraboloid is
built in CLT - Cross Laminated Timber - with more than 5.5 linear kilometers of spruce louvers
generating a giant wooden Mashrabiya - which by rotating of 180 degrees - envelops the
entire project to better protect it from solar radiation.
It is a dynamic monolith dedicated to renewable energies, covered with a large photovoltaic
and thermal solar canopy, producing electricity and domestic hot water for the pavilion's self-
consumption.
It is also a biophilic architecture that hosts a rich program whose balconies and rooftops are
planted with intensive revegetation of more than 2,500 plants, shrubs, and trees. These
“breathable”, drip-watered facades, naturally refresh - through evapotranspiration from the
plants - the large outdoor terraces where having fun is encouraged.
24
World Expo has both cohesive and communication capabilities.
We can use these capabilities as a trigger to sustain growth and development of Osaka,
Kansai as well as Japan following on from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
What is a World Expo?
A World Expo is an event that brings together people and innovations from around the world
in an effort to address issues facing mankind on a global scale.
The Osaka Expo 1970, Japan’s, and Asia’s, first ever, became a symbol of Japan’s rapid
economic growth and one of the country’s most lauded events.
Twenty years after the Aichi Expo 2005, Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai will bring the international
community back to Japan.
A World Exposition is a place where new technologies and products are
born, triggering greater convenience in our daily lives.
Elevator (New York Exhibition, 1853), telephone (Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, 1876),
family restaurants, wireless telephones, electric cars, moving sidewalks (Expo 1970 Osaka),
entry tickets embedded with IC chips, AED, dry mist (Aichi Exposition, 2005).
In 2025, the world will be a mere five years away from 2030, the year the United Nations has
set as the target for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), making it a crucial
one for ramping up efforts to achieve these goals.
Therefore, Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai will become a key platform for reaching the SDGs by
2030.
25
Common Ground: creating a new dawn together
A global event, which brings together people and innovations from around the world in an
effort to address issues facing mankind on a global scale. During Expo, more than 160
countries and organisations will showcase new technology and solutions that can help us
build a resilient future.
26
The theme of Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai is ‘Designing Future Society for Our Lives’.
Common Ground refers to the history, innovation and the future creative way we work
together.
Today, the world is facing two urgent challenges when it comes to energy transition: scarcity
of raw materials and the end of our dependency on fossil fuels. As energy is at the heart of
everything we need and do: we must fast track the transition to clean and renewable energy.
As a message of hope for a resilient future, the design of the Netherlands Pavilion features
an anthropogenic ('man-made') sun. It symbolises the rising sun - a future empowered by
collaboration and energy that is clean, unlimited, and accessible for all: a new dawn.
At the heart of the Pavilion, the Netherlands will present technologies that can harness the
infinite power contained in water. Technologies that might even go a long way towards
ending our dependency on fossil fuel. A transition towards clean and renewable energy.
Clean and renewable energy resources that are accessible for all will open up boundless
possibilities for sustainable innovation that enable people to live a healthy and happy life.
Together, we can pioneer solutions to fight climate change, increase food supply, futureproof
our cities and improve global health.

About CATCH
The CATCH plan was an acceleration plan for employment growth in the Charleroi
Métropole region. It was following Caterpillar's announcement, on November 10, 2016, of
the closure of its Gosselies production site, that a group of experts was commissioned by the
Walloon Government to define these areas of acceleration and development in the Charleroi
Region from the North Plateau of Gosselies.
This resulted in the CATCH Plan – Catalysts For Charleroi – implemented by the public
utility start-up Delivery Unit CATCH.
The CATCH plan was born from this desire and is inspired by similar conversion efforts in the
Province of Limburg following the closure of Ford Genk. The projects included in the CATCH
plan are part of the action of the Walloon Government in a transversal way and go well
beyond the conversion of the Caterpillar site to embrace projects throughout the territory of
Charleroi Métropole. The implementation of the CATCH plan was based on a dedicated team
35
(the Delivery Unit) which ensures for a maximum period of 3 years (June 2017-June 2020)
that the various projects are put on track.
15 projects, the result of intense consultations and exchanges with many players in
the economic and social field of the region, have been spread over 4 sectors essential
for the economy of Charleroi. Since the end of the CATCH plan mission in June 2020,
Sambrinvest, a structure supporting SME projects in the Charleroi Sud-Hainaut region,
intends to pursue the same objectives.
Four sectors
Advanced Manufacturing: Concerns the advanced manufacturing industry.
The projects undertaken relate primarily to innovation in the industry and the development
of maintenance activity in aviation. For several years, the industrial landscape of Charleroi
has been illustrated in aeronautics (Sonaca, SABCA) and electronics (Alstom, Thales Alenia
Space Belgium, AGC Europe). The CATCH Plan aims to boost innovation among these
companies and encourage new partnerships.
36
Airport & Logistics: Transport and logistics.
Charleroi, due to its central position, plays a key role in the field of transport and logistics
and its airport has developed considerably. The CATCH Plan intends to support the growth
of the airport (BSCA, Brussels South Charleroi Airport), well beyond the region, attract new
players in the sector and develop cutting-edge logistics activities, particularly in
biopharmaceuticals.
Health & Bio: Living industries.
The Charleroi Biopark, created in 1999 by the Free University of Brussels, brings together
nearly 50 cutting-edge companies, three research institutes, and an incubator alongside two
hospitals and various players in the pharmaceutical field. Having experienced considerable
growth for several years, its name is more commonly that of Brussels South Charleroi
BioPark.
This veritable scientific and economic ecosystem included, in 2020, some seventy players in
the biotechnology and biopharmaceutical sectors. A new structure since January 2019,
Biopark Dev, formerly the i-Tech Incubator, is specifically dedicated to its development. The
Catch Plan wishes to continue to promote the growth of the BioPark, develop connections
around the two hospitals present and position Charleroi in the field of e-health thanks to the
development of the RSW (Réseau Santé Wallon).
Creative & Digital: Sectors between creative and digital.
Charleroi is a melting pot for comic strips with Dupuis and the famous Marcinelle school, a
style born in the 1940s. Today, Charleroi is home to many graphic designers, video game
creators and digital startups. The CATCH Plan aims to make the city center of Charleroi a real
digital center by increasing the training offer6. One of the examples of this boom is the
transformation of the former postal sorting building, near Charleroi station, into a digital,
digital and industrial hub.

Small islands have great ideas ! More than any EYE Global destinations such as Singapore or South Korea, Taiwan offers a truly and memorable Equinoctial Erasmus. As a projection into space of the earth's equator; an imaginary circle equidistant from the celestial poles, Taiwan has indeed many equinoctial partners : Haiti, Belize, Guatemala, eSwatini, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Tuvalu.

  • 5. 5 EYE like Erasmus for your Entrepreneurs … Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs Global is an exchange programme financed by the European Union to facilitate business exchanges between European new entrepreneurs and experienced host entrepreneurs in Canada (Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia), Israel, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and the USA (NY State, California), with the help of contact points, active the field of business support and entrepreneurship. A host entrepreneur (HE) can benefit from fresh ideas from a motivated new entrepreneur on his business. He/she may have specialised skills or knowledge in an area that he does not master, which could also complement yours. He can also benefit from access to new markets, international cooperation and potential possibilities for collaboration with business partners abroad. New entrepreneurs (NE), on the other hand, benefit from an experience in a small or medium- sized enterprise in a country outside of Europe. This will ease the successful start of their business or strengthen their new enterprise. The exchange between the two entrepreneurs, which can last between 1-3 months, is a win- win collaboration whereby both of entrepreneurs can also discover new markets or business partners, as well as different ways of doing business. The role of these contact points, also referred to as Intermediary Organisations (IOs), is to facilitate successful relationships between the new entrepreneur and the host entrepreneur. To this end, they promote the programme, offer support with the applications process, arrange contacts between entrepreneurs, support the drafting of the plan for the exchange, and provide support to entrepreneurs during the exchange. Every relationship between a new and a host entrepreneur needs two IOs (one responsible for the NE and the other for the HE). Abroad, the EYE Global exchange programme may spark confusing capital letters. So, I might reuse them to invite readers to enter a new dialogue between Taiwan and the EU. Many thanks for your attention.

  • 7. 7 Equinoctial Ycombinator Erasmus - Europe - Entrepreneur Equinoctial as a cross-border projection into space With its Green Deal, the EU needs also to shape and influence equinoctial connections. As already mentioned, Taiwan has many equinoctial partners : Haiti, Belize, Guatemala, eSwatini, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Tuvalu. Among those overseas territories and islands, Saint Lucia is part of the Windward Islands located on the eastern edge of the Caribbean Sea. In close diplomatic relationship with Taiwan, Saint Lucia is located between the islands of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to the south, Barbados to the southeast, and Martinique to the north.
  • 8. 8 Taking its name from Lucia of Syracuse, Saint Lucia is the only state in the world to be named after a woman. The Europeans will then gradually try to establish themselves there, but without success. It was France that began to establish a real colony and signed a treaty with the Kalinago in 1660. Nevertheless, the island was throughout the 17th and 18th centuries mainly disputed between the French and the British, who obtained control of it. complete in 1814, with the Treaty of Paris. Also, Saint Lucia, which was the stake of a fierce struggle between English and French (especially for its sources of fresh water, rare in the Caribbean), is officially nicknamed the "Helene of the West" (the Helen of the West), or "Hélène des Antilles" ("Helen of the West Indies"), by analogy with Hélène de Troie (Helene of the East), who in Antiquity was the subject of a fierce struggle between the various Greek and Trojan princes. This nickname,
  • 9. 9 officially recognized, is present in the second verse of the Lucian national anthem: Sons and Daughters of Saint Lucia. Martinique and the island of Saint Lucia have long flown the same flag. The four-serpent flag flew on merchant marine vessels following a royal ordinance in 1766.
  • 10. 10 Y Combinator as a returns on a fixed point of another function which generalizes the notion of "eigenfunctions" in computer programs. Y Combinator is the best startup accelerator in the world (Scribd, Reddit, Airbnb, Dropbox, Disqus et Posterous…). The company's accelerator program started in Boston and Mountain View, expanded to San Francisco in 2019, and was entirely online during the COVID-19 pandemic. Forbes characterized the company in 2012 as one of the most successful startup accelerators in Silicon Valley. During my Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs experience in cooperation with Taiwan, I had the chance to be hosted within Your Carbon Holdings Inc.
  • 11. 11 On a daily basis, people used to call the company “Y C”. This acronym also has many meanings in terms of connectivity and in light of Y Combinator or similar combinations of letters. The Y combinator is one of the coolest ideas in computer science. The Y combinator is a function that returns a fixed point of another function. It is called a "higher order function" because it takes another function as an argument. YC represents for me a great inspiration for the powerful Taiwanese community both on the West and East coasts of the US (mainly California and Massachusetts but also Arizona, NY, Texas and other states…). • 12. 12 With Celtic roots, I am also fascinated by the great Taiwanese leadership running public affairs in Boston for example, where many Irish, Breton and Celtic ancestors immigrated to. Michelle Wu (Chinese: 吳弭; born January 14, 1985) is an American lawyer and politician serving as the mayor of Boston, Massachusetts, since 2021. The daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, she was the first Asian American woman to serve on the Boston City Council. After TeherAngeles, what about TaiAngeles ? TehrAngeles (or Little Persia) is a portmanteau deriving from the combination of Tehran, the capital of Iran, and Los Angeles. A Persian community developed in Westwood, Los Angeles after the Islamic Revolution of 1979 prompted thousands of Iranians to flee to the United States. It is a shopping, eating and gathering place for the large number (estimates range from 500,000 to 600,000) of Iranian-Americans and their descendants residing in the Los Angeles metropolitan area which is the largest such population outside Iran. The intersection
  • 13. 13 of Westwood Boulevard and Wilkins Avenue was recognized by the City of Los Angeles as Persian Square. At 24.3% of the total Taiwanese-American population, the Taiwanese community in Greater Los Angeles represents the largest Taiwanese community in the United States. There is a large Taiwanese and Taiwanese American community in the Greater Los Angeles Area. Many Taiwanese settled in the suburbs, notably Monterey Park, which eventually became known as “Little Taipei”. Taiwanese immigration to the United States was limited in the years before World War II, due to Japanese rule as well as the Immigration Act of 1924, which completely barred immigration from Asia. From World War II to 1965, a small number of students studied throughout the United States.

  • 15. 15 Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC; also called Taiwan Semiconductor) is a Taiwanese multinational semiconductor contract manufacturing and design company. It is the world's most valuable semiconductor company, the world's largest dedicated independent ("pure-play") semiconductor foundry, and its country's largest company, with headquarters and main operations located in the Hsinchu Science Park in Hsinchu. It is majority owned by foreign investors, with the central government of Taiwan as the largest shareholder. Founded in Taiwan in 1987 by Morris Chang, TSMC was the world's first dedicated semiconductor foundry and has long been the leading company in its field. Most of the leading fabless semiconductor companies such as AMD, Apple, ARM, Broadcom, Marvell, MediaTek, Qualcomm and Nvidia, are customers of TSMC, as are emerging companies such as Allwinner Technology, HiSilicon, Spectra7, and UNISOC. TSMC has a global capacity of about thirteen million 300 mm-equivalent wafers per year as of 2020 and makes chips for customers with process nodes from 2 microns to 5 nanometres. TSMC was the first foundry to market 7-nanometre and 5-nanometre (used by the 2020 Apple A14 and M1 SoCs and the MediaTek Dimensity 8100) production capabilities, and the first to commercialize extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology in high volume.
  • 16. 16 Doctor Morris Chang (born 10 July 1931) is a Taiwanese-American businessman who built his career in the United States and subsequently in Taiwan. He is the founder, as well as former chairman and CEO, of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). He is known as the semiconductor industry founder of Taiwan. As of October 2021, his net worth was estimated at US$2.8 billion. In 1986, Li Kwoh-ting, representing the Executive Yuan, invited Morris Chang to serve as the president of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). At that time, the Taiwanese government wanted to develop its semiconductor industry, but its high investment and high risk nature made it difficult to find investors. Only Philips was willing to sign a joint venture contract with Taiwan to invest 27.5% of TSMC's capital. Since then, the company has continued to grow, albeit subject to the cycles of demand. In 2011, the company planned to increase research and development expenditures by almost 39% to NT$50 billion to fend off growing competition. The company also planned to expand capacity by 30% in 2011 to meet strong market demand. In May 2014, TSMC's board of directors approved capital appropriations of US$568 million to increase and improve manufacturing capabilities after the company forecast higher than expected demand. In
  • 17. 17 August 2014, TSMC's board of directors approved additional capital appropriations of US$3.05 billion. In 2020, TSMC became the first semiconductor company in the world to sign up for the RE100 initiative, pledging to use 100% renewable energy by 2050. TSMC accounts for roughly 5% of the energy consumption in Taiwan, even exceeding that of the capital city Taipei. This initiative was thus expected to accelerate the transformation to renewable energy in the country. In November 2020, officials in Phoenix, Arizona in the United States approved TSMC's plan to build a $12 billion chip plant in the city. Innovation often originates as a single idea; yet it has the potential to unimaginably transform the lives of billions of people! I visited the TSMC Museum of Innovation. Here you can explore how TSMC and its innovative business model accelerate innovation in integrated circuit (IC) design and product applications. These innovations propel ICs’ pervasiveness in our modern world while significantly improving our lives. Here too, we learn how TSMC contributes to global IC innovation and to Taiwan’s economy.
  • 18. 18 Erasmus as a cooperation gateway among humans, ideas and minds I will miss Taiwan so much. I would like to share with you this inspiring report. It is really hard for me to summarize such an insightful experience. In one word, I would like to name what I learned as : the 'Statistics of Nature' “自然統計”. This expression is inspired by a Chinese artist and Professor Qiu Zhijie which suggests the struggle between the forces of fate and self-determination. From the 'Statistics of Fortune' to the 'Statistics of Nature' “自然統計” “The Statistics of Fortune” believed that scientific research has been inseparable from religious activities since ancient times. There are a lot of mysterious elements entangled in the history of science, while they often appear in the form of empirical evidence from religious activities. Therefore, let's explore a new perspective that delve into the history of science from profound cultural perspectives such as artificial intelligence.

  • 22. 22 From Expo 58 to the Arch of Nature : on the road to Osaka Expo Effectively, today's youth is stuck between, on the one hand, the denial of the latest climate- skeptics and, on the other hand, collapsologists warning us of the probable collapse of our civilization incapable of quickly reinventing itself to face the challenges of climate change. Expo 58, also known as the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair, was the first major World Expo registered under BIE after World War II. During the Dubai Expo, the Belgian pavilion was called "The Green Arch", as it combined intensive greenery and futuristic design in solid wood. The pavilion aimed to be exemplary in terms of sustainable development. It is an ode to a regenerative circular economy, to biobased and geo-sourced materials, to the integration of bioclimatic rules and renewable energies, as well as to the preservation of biodiversity and nature.
  • 23. 23 This means that “The Green Arch” is based on a “bridge-building”, creating an immense vault with double curvature between its two pillars. This curvaceous vault is generated from a universal mathematical minimum surface called "hyperbolic paraboloid". This paraboloid is built in CLT - Cross Laminated Timber - with more than 5.5 linear kilometers of spruce louvers generating a giant wooden Mashrabiya - which by rotating of 180 degrees - envelops the entire project to better protect it from solar radiation. It is a dynamic monolith dedicated to renewable energies, covered with a large photovoltaic and thermal solar canopy, producing electricity and domestic hot water for the pavilion's self- consumption. It is also a biophilic architecture that hosts a rich program whose balconies and rooftops are planted with intensive revegetation of more than 2,500 plants, shrubs, and trees. These “breathable”, drip-watered facades, naturally refresh - through evapotranspiration from the plants - the large outdoor terraces where having fun is encouraged.
  • 24. 24 World Expo has both cohesive and communication capabilities. We can use these capabilities as a trigger to sustain growth and development of Osaka, Kansai as well as Japan following on from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. What is a World Expo? A World Expo is an event that brings together people and innovations from around the world in an effort to address issues facing mankind on a global scale. The Osaka Expo 1970, Japan’s, and Asia’s, first ever, became a symbol of Japan’s rapid economic growth and one of the country’s most lauded events. Twenty years after the Aichi Expo 2005, Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai will bring the international community back to Japan. A World Exposition is a place where new technologies and products are born, triggering greater convenience in our daily lives. Elevator (New York Exhibition, 1853), telephone (Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, 1876), family restaurants, wireless telephones, electric cars, moving sidewalks (Expo 1970 Osaka), entry tickets embedded with IC chips, AED, dry mist (Aichi Exposition, 2005). In 2025, the world will be a mere five years away from 2030, the year the United Nations has set as the target for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), making it a crucial one for ramping up efforts to achieve these goals. Therefore, Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai will become a key platform for reaching the SDGs by 2030.
  • 25. 25 Common Ground: creating a new dawn together A global event, which brings together people and innovations from around the world in an effort to address issues facing mankind on a global scale. During Expo, more than 160 countries and organisations will showcase new technology and solutions that can help us build a resilient future.
  • 26. 26 The theme of Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai is ‘Designing Future Society for Our Lives’. Common Ground refers to the history, innovation and the future creative way we work together. Today, the world is facing two urgent challenges when it comes to energy transition: scarcity of raw materials and the end of our dependency on fossil fuels. As energy is at the heart of everything we need and do: we must fast track the transition to clean and renewable energy. As a message of hope for a resilient future, the design of the Netherlands Pavilion features an anthropogenic ('man-made') sun. It symbolises the rising sun - a future empowered by collaboration and energy that is clean, unlimited, and accessible for all: a new dawn. At the heart of the Pavilion, the Netherlands will present technologies that can harness the infinite power contained in water. Technologies that might even go a long way towards ending our dependency on fossil fuel. A transition towards clean and renewable energy. Clean and renewable energy resources that are accessible for all will open up boundless possibilities for sustainable innovation that enable people to live a healthy and happy life. Together, we can pioneer solutions to fight climate change, increase food supply, futureproof our cities and improve global health.

  • 34. 34 About CATCH The CATCH plan was an acceleration plan for employment growth in the Charleroi Métropole region. It was following Caterpillar's announcement, on November 10, 2016, of the closure of its Gosselies production site, that a group of experts was commissioned by the Walloon Government to define these areas of acceleration and development in the Charleroi Region from the North Plateau of Gosselies. This resulted in the CATCH Plan – Catalysts For Charleroi – implemented by the public utility start-up Delivery Unit CATCH. The CATCH plan was born from this desire and is inspired by similar conversion efforts in the Province of Limburg following the closure of Ford Genk. The projects included in the CATCH plan are part of the action of the Walloon Government in a transversal way and go well beyond the conversion of the Caterpillar site to embrace projects throughout the territory of Charleroi Métropole. The implementation of the CATCH plan was based on a dedicated team
  • 35. 35 (the Delivery Unit) which ensures for a maximum period of 3 years (June 2017-June 2020) that the various projects are put on track. 15 projects, the result of intense consultations and exchanges with many players in the economic and social field of the region, have been spread over 4 sectors essential for the economy of Charleroi. Since the end of the CATCH plan mission in June 2020, Sambrinvest, a structure supporting SME projects in the Charleroi Sud-Hainaut region, intends to pursue the same objectives. Four sectors Advanced Manufacturing: Concerns the advanced manufacturing industry. The projects undertaken relate primarily to innovation in the industry and the development of maintenance activity in aviation. For several years, the industrial landscape of Charleroi has been illustrated in aeronautics (Sonaca, SABCA) and electronics (Alstom, Thales Alenia Space Belgium, AGC Europe). The CATCH Plan aims to boost innovation among these companies and encourage new partnerships.
  • 36. 36 Airport & Logistics: Transport and logistics. Charleroi, due to its central position, plays a key role in the field of transport and logistics and its airport has developed considerably. The CATCH Plan intends to support the growth of the airport (BSCA, Brussels South Charleroi Airport), well beyond the region, attract new players in the sector and develop cutting-edge logistics activities, particularly in biopharmaceuticals. Health & Bio: Living industries. The Charleroi Biopark, created in 1999 by the Free University of Brussels, brings together nearly 50 cutting-edge companies, three research institutes, and an incubator alongside two hospitals and various players in the pharmaceutical field. Having experienced considerable growth for several years, its name is more commonly that of Brussels South Charleroi BioPark. This veritable scientific and economic ecosystem included, in 2020, some seventy players in the biotechnology and biopharmaceutical sectors. A new structure since January 2019, Biopark Dev, formerly the i-Tech Incubator, is specifically dedicated to its development. The Catch Plan wishes to continue to promote the growth of the BioPark, develop connections around the two hospitals present and position Charleroi in the field of e-health thanks to the development of the RSW (Réseau Santé Wallon). Creative & Digital: Sectors between creative and digital. Charleroi is a melting pot for comic strips with Dupuis and the famous Marcinelle school, a style born in the 1940s. Today, Charleroi is home to many graphic designers, video game creators and digital startups. The CATCH Plan aims to make the city center of Charleroi a real digital center by increasing the training offer6. One of the examples of this boom is the transformation of the former postal sorting building, near Charleroi station, into a digital, digital and industrial hub.
