Inspiring Talk 1: Darren Smith
After graduating from the University of Greenwich Darren went on to be a secondary
school teacher before becoming a Football Development Officer for the London
FA. Darren is now the Programme Lead for Sports Coaching and Lecturer at UCFB
Wembley, a UEFA A License Coach, FA Affiliate Tutor and FA Coach Mentor.
Darren has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the fields of football development,
coaching and education. As well as his roles in coach education and work as a coach with
the Nike Academy, Darren is also actively engaged in and a champion of grassroots football
and runs FA Charter Standard Community Club ‘HF Sports Paulista FC’ in Lewisham.

Classroom Theory: England DNA workshop, Katie Phillipson (London FA Coach Mentor)
An introduction The FA’s ‘England DNA’ playing and coaching philosophy. The session will
focus on the ‘How We Coach’ element of the philosophy and provide an insight into
coaching fundamentals and touch on core principles such as learning/coaching styles,
using game realistic practices and session design to maximise learning/decision making.

Afternoon practical workshop discussion and set up
Students will take part in two workshops outlined below, each lasting for approx. 90
minutes.
The practical sessions will take place in the Airdome 3G pitch which is a 5-10 minute walk
from the David Fussey building.
1.15pm – 4.15pm
Airdome 3G pitch
Practical sessions with the London FA Skills team:
Group 1 Workshop - Effective practices to coaching 5-11 year olds, Chris Abel (FA Skills
Coach London)
This workshop will continue to touch upon the principles of the morning ‘England DNA’
session and put them into practice. Participants will take part in different types and
session, looking at what makes an effective practice, how you can put the ‘How We Coach’
fundamentals into action when working with 5-11 year olds.
Group 2 Workshop - Introduction to Coaching: using small-sided games, Katie Phillipson
(London FA Coach Mentor)
This Workshop will be an introduction on how to adapt and utilise small-sided games (i.e.
5v5) to bring out different themes and topics within coaching sessions. Again this
workshop will highlight the fundamentals covered in the morning ‘England DNA’ session
and see them put into practice.
4.15pm – 4.30pm Refreshment Break- changing facilities will be made available for those wishing to change
after practical sessions.

Inspiring Talk 2: Keon Richardson
Keon is a determined, diligent and driven Final Year Sport and Social Sciences student at
the University of Bath, aiming to excel in the field of Football Development, with a special
interest in Disability Football. Keon plays for Bristol City Futsal Club and University of Bath
Futsal First Team with aspirations to play overseas and in the UEFA Futsal Cup.
Keon has just completed an internship at QPR through his placement year and has coached
in Zambia. Keon will share his journey into coaching and the opportunities it has created
for him. This year Keon also won the London FA’s Young Volunteer of the Year award and
the Regional FA Award for Young Volunteer of the Year.
