BINDING HIDDEN AREA
3. Amid an increasingly complex environment for providing healthcare, Memorial’s ongoing success
is rooted in our ability to plan for the future while maintaining a clear focus on our vision — to be
the preferred health services provider for the people in our region and the first place people come
for quality care. We believe this is possible as our entire organization is united through a promise
to place our patients at the center of all we do.
This past year was a time of significant achievement for Memorial Healthcare. Our most visible
accomplishment was the construction of the Memorial Medical Arts Building at the corner of
King and Shiawassee Streets. Nearly three years of planning, design and
construction were invested in the new building, a state-of-the-art facility
designed to inspire our patients to use their mind, body and spirit to fight
cancer and other serious health concerns.
When we consider this organizational milestone, we are mindful that the
bricks, stone and steel are not what distinguish us as a healthcare leader.
It is the work of our physicians and nurses, employees and benefactors,
board members and friends throughout the community that bring these
magnificent facilities to life for our patients.
In the 2007 annual report, you will read about just a few of our
physicians whose expertise, commitment to patients, and hometown
caring make our accomplishments possible each and every day.
Therefore, I would like to dedicate this Annual Report to our physicians
as well as our 1,100 staff, 388 volunteers and countless community
agencies and organizations, who join us in our mission. We are proud to
partner with you as we seek to extend our services to all who call the Greater Shiawassee County
area their home.

4. Memorial’s community-based mission to promote health and
provide quality compassionate healthcare in our region has been
our foundation for more than 86 years. In 2007, we continued
to care for individuals, families and communities through our
commitment to service excellence, teamwork and innovation.
As the hospital chosen more often by the people in our region
than any other serving the Greater Shiawassee County region,
we dedicate our work to bringing you the best available healthcare
and patient experience.
Our core values of innovation, excellence, teamwork, efficiency,
honesty, integrity, confidentiality and compassion unite our staff.
These ideals give our entire organization the inspiration to place
our patients at the center of all we do. In 2007, Memorial provided
healthcare services to thousands of individuals through our 13
sites of care.
We are pleased that Memorial’s performance was recognized by
numerous organizations. Our Cancer Center earned accreditation
with commendation from the American College of Surgeons, and
Memorial has earned the Governor’s Award of Excellence for
improving care in the Emergency Department, inpatient setting,
and in our employed physicians’ offices. Additionally, Memorial
again was rated among the nation’s top “Most Wired Hospitals.”
With a growing number of uninsured, the need to enhance the
provision of primary care services in our region was a top priority
for us this past year. Memorial worked with government and other
Mid-Michigan health providers to establish the county’s only
Federally Qualified Health Center. As a new access point for care,
the Mobile Health Center is providing service to underserved and
uninsured residents.
In 2007, the spirit of giving in our region was a blessing to those
individuals and families in our community who are fighting
cancer. Ground was broken and builders went to work assembling
a 40,000 sq. ft. facility to the East of the hospital’s main campus.
Our physicians and staff are thrilled with the new Memorial Medical
Arts Building, as our the tenants, which include the Memorial
Cancer Center, Center for Blood Disorders, and Endoscopy Lab. All
are among the best equipped in the state to serve patients.
By collaborating with our physician experts, we are:
• Leading the region in surgeries. In fact, for the past five years,
Memorial Healthcare has cared for more surgery patients, who
call Shiawassee County home, than any other acute care hospital
serving the region. In 2007, the Memorial Operating Room
managed more than 4,800 surgical procedures.
• Developing our orthopedic programs to speed recovery times
and improve surgical outcomes. Last year, our top quality team
of board-certified physicians and staff performed more than
1,285 hip, knee and shoulder procedures.

5. • Providing emergency care to more than 90 patients each and
every day for a wide range of emergency medical conditions.
Our team of highly-trained and experienced physicians, nurses
and support staff are seeing and treating patients quicker than
competing hospitals.
• Offering the most convenient and highest quality diagnostic
imaging services in the area. Equipped with the latest patient
tracking and staff communication systems, we are exceeding
customer expectations with average wait times below 9 minutes.
In 2008, we will continue our progress in state-of-the-art diag-
nostics with the addition of digital mammography, MRI of the
breast, and new reporting tools for referring physicians.
• Prepared to offer the most comprehensive restorative therapy
program in the region, with specialty programs for physical
therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, back and neck
care, aquatic therapy and athletic training.
• Investing in technology and recruiting medical specialists to
ensure the highest quality of care, expertise and equipment
are available and keeping pace with the rapid developments in
medical knowledge and advancements.
• Performing significantly quicker evaluation and top-quality
performance for thousands
of Endoscopy procedures
each year.
While these examples illustrate
our commitment to improve
the health and well being
of those we serve, they offer
only a glimpse of the many
improvements and technological
advances made in 2007. In this
year’s report we have profiled
just a few of the physicians
who contributed to our
successes. It is through their
expertise that we are able
to bring some of the most
sophisticated medical pro-
cedures to our hospital and
the people living in
the Greater Shiawassee
County region.
In the coming year, we
expect to build on these successes and
introduce other services. Our new strategic plan will guide us,
as we do our utmost to provide all patients with a personalized,
supportive experience, through expert care and hometown caring.
I hope this report heightens your awareness about how Memorial
promotes the health and healing of those we serve, and of our
efforts to create optimal health and greater value.

6. As a community owned, non-for-profit organization Memorial Healthcare is committed to
being a good steward of our corporate assets. We believe in sound management of our
financial resources and believe accountability is of the highest importance.
Memorial maintains records to identify and monitor the level of community benefit
provided. These records include the amount of charges forgone for services and
supplies rendered under its charity care policy. The following information measures
the level of community benefit provided:
Memorial accepts all patients regardless of their ability to pay. Memorial has
established a formal policy whereby a patient may qualify as a charity patient
if certain criteria are met. These policies define charity services as those
services for which no payment is anticipated. In assessing a patient’s ability to
pay, Memorial utilizes the generally recognized poverty income levels, but also
includes certain cases where incurred charges are significant compared to the
patient’s available resources. In addition to providing services to the financially
disadvantaged, Memorial participates in county, state, and federal programs designed
for the indigent and elderly, whereby the Hospital may be reimbursed at less than
the cost of providing those services and provides other community service at no or
nominal cost.
In addition to charity care, Memorial Healthcare also provides extensive community
benefit programs which include free health screenings, educational programs, wellness
events, injury prevention activities and resources to support community building
activities.

10. Dr. Tallat Mahmood helped breathe life into the new Memorial Medical Arts Building — transforming it from a
well-designed building into a building of wellness, hope and possibilities for area cancer patients.
“This was an exciting opportunity to work with hospital administration and staff to make this a center the community
can be proud of.” Proud not only of the patient-friendly design itself, but also of the high level of technology and
medical care that would be available to area residents. By expanding the Cancer Center, patients now have access to
the very latest technology in advanced radiation therapy, including IGRT: Image-Guided Radiation Therapy.
Dr. Mahmood, Co-Director of Memorial’s Cancer Center, plans on using the building to its fullest potential to treat
patients. She is looking forward to holding educational seminars in the Community Room and focusing on cancer
screening, early cancer detection and awareness.
Dr. Mahmood also wants patients to have more options for participating in clinical trials at Memorial’s Cancer
Center. Clinical trials offer the latest research and treatments that aren’t yet standard to patients who want to try
additional therapies.
The entire Memorial family is excited about the new $12 million building which houses a first floor Cancer Center and
a second floor Endoscopy Center. Physicians and staff weighed in on the workflow process, computer accessibility,
optimal housekeeping response, as well as accessibility to laboratory and pharmacy services. Patients weighed in on
environmental issues such as privacy and color schemes. Neighbors reviewed exterior finishes and the overall site plan.
We created a healing environment that’s welcoming and reassuring — and a place where community patients have access
to the latest technology in both the Endoscopy Center and Cancer Center.
At the Memorial Medical Arts Building, patients will discover a supportive environment for their family and friends
— including privacy, a welcoming waiting area, a Bistro style snack bar and a unique healing garden. Designed for
patients, designed for possibilities — the Memorial Medical Arts Building is an asset to the community.

As an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Whelan treats musculoskeletal problems such as bone fractures,
tendon injuries and peripheral nerve decompressions. Other surgeries include joint replacements for
arthritis, arthroscopic shoulder and knee injuries, as well as sports-related injuries.
“I see my patients at the stores, restaurants, movies and church all the time”, says Dr. Whelan,
who is content to be connected to the community. “I use local businesses instead of big outside
companies whenever possible.”
But don’t think for a moment that Dr. Whelan doesn’t think big. As a member of Memorial’s
Technical Advisory Committee, Dr. Whelan feels it’s part of her job to make sure the technology
is not only state-of-the-art, but also suited to physicians’ needs. She also acknowledges that the
technology used by physicians is increasing daily.
“Without a doctor’s input, one can only guess at what would be most helpful in a clinical setting.”
This “no guesswork” approach at Memorial has helped to boost Memorial’s technology capabilities
and the adoption of technology by caregivers, including the establishment of physician-friendly
electronic medical records. Many physicians provided their input and insight into issues involving
use of the hospital’s computer system in their office settings. This resulted in improvements such
as computerized order entry, e-signature and easy patient information access that are a real plus for
physicians and their patients.

Dr. Margaret Snow enjoys life and the outdoors and that’s something she wants for her patients as well. “My love
of sports makes it easier to connect with some of my patients. When a patient has a sport which they are
trying to return to, I enjoy going through the motions of that activity in the office, and I try to help them
figure out the best exercises and stretches to address any deficits they currently have.”
As one of Memorial Healthcare’s board certified Physical Medicine Specialists, Dr. Snow enjoys sharing her
own hobbies with patients and showing them how she stays healthy through golf, biking, kayaking and
swimming. “I hope that I am able to set an example about striving to become more fit. I do acknowledge
how difficult it can be, and take a bit of ribbing about how much time my kayak spends sitting on my car roof
instead of in the water.”
Dr. Snow’s specialty is a field of medicine born in the 1940’s as a response to the polio epidemic, and
which also became an important aspect of care for wounded World War II veterans. Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation now covers much more including: Invasive Pain Management, Spinal Cord Rehabilitation,
Work Injuries, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Back and Neck Pain and Musculoskeletal Problems.
At Memorial Healthcare, Dr. Snow also performs nerve conduction studies and EMG (electromyograms)
to help diagnose muscle and nerve problems. Much of her practice is dedicated to working with physically
disabled patients and coordinating rehabilitation programs that may include physical, occupational or speech
therapy, braces, prostheses, wheelchairs or other adaptive mobility aides. “I have particular interests in wheel-
chair fitting and prosthetic management for amputee patients.”
“My goal — to help patients improve their function after injury or illness, to learn to manage pain, and return
to a life as near their ideal as possible.”

Dr. Ronald Bishop and the Memorial Emergency Department team are ready for anything. Any
time of the day or night. “We see accidents, trauma, referrals from Urgent Care — we see babies
and we see the elderly,” said Dr. Bishop. As the only hospital in Shiawassee County, Memorial
Healthcare serves more than 82,000 area residents. On average, over 90 people visit the Memorial
Emergency Department each day, putting their concerns about minor illnesses and critical medical
conditions into our hands. Roughly half are admitted to the hospital for acute care.
What makes this team ready for anything?
• A well-trained staff with access to the latest technology at their fingertips.
• Full-time board certified emergency physicians.
• A nursing staff with special training in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and many
with Trauma Nurse Certification.
• Access to medical specialists in over 32 disciplines who are on call to assist.
In the last 18 years that Dr. Bishop has been in Memorial’s ED, he’s seen the patient capacity
double. He’s also seen the extensiveness of Memorial’s commitment to excellence as the hospital
continues to provide the Emergency Department and its team members with latest diagnostic
technology and capabilities to aid in diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Bishop and the Memorial Healthcare team also work closely with the Shiawassee County EMS
Network to provide a coordinated approach to delivering high quality emergency care to the ill
and injured. This includes having a strong relationship with other area medical centers who might
provide advanced care to cardiac patients when needed, or for serious trauma patients. Dr. Bishop
notes that when necessary, “We’ve made preparations for a higher level of care.”
“We might be smaller than our competitors, but we do emergency care very well.”

Dr. Barnas enjoys taking the time to get to know his patients well, but doesn’t want them to be in the hospital
any longer than they have to be. As a General Surgeon at Memorial Healthcare, he’s glad to see a trend towards
more minimally invasive procedures that allow patients to have a shorter stay, reduced risk and a quicker return
to work — all very good things for the community.
He likes the hometown feel of the surrounding Owosso area, and the individual interaction that working here
allows. “We can do almost everything at Memorial.”
Patients trust Memorial’s Surgical Services because of our skilled and compassionate care, state-of-the-art
technology and safe laser and endoscopic surgical options. Memorial’s surgical team is comprised of specially
trained surgeons, nurses, technicians and certified anesthesiologists. These are just a few reasons that more
people in the region turn to Memorial Healthcare for surgical services than any other hospital.
And while Dr. Barnas is busy, it seems he’s just going to get busier. In fact, with the new Memorial Medical
Arts Building scheduled to open, Dr. Barnas foresees that community cancer patients will opt to have more
cancer surgeries performed at Memorial. As for Endoscopy support, Dr. Barnas mentions that colon surgeries
have made the biggest leap towards minimally invasive procedures, now just requiring a few small incisions.
It’s been exciting for Dr. Barnas to see the growth at Memorial since he arrived less than three years ago,
especially the construction of the new Medical Arts Building. “I used to look out and try to imagine it where
the trees were…now the new building is here and is part of the campus and the community.” Dr. Barnas is
also part of the planning process for future physical improvements, which include evaluation of Memorial’s
operating room and surgical area.
But even a very busy surgeon needs to have balance in life, and Dr. Barnas is no exception. He knows that
the end of Michigan’s winter means its time to put away the skis and pull out the golf clubs. His other love is
softball, but he knows that takes more organization…so if anyone is getting a game together, call Dr. Barnas,
and please make sure the good surgeon wears a mitt.

The new Endoscopy Center in the Memorial Medical Arts Building provides the “best of both worlds,”
according to board certified Gastroenterologist Dr. Marcia Skjaerlund. This free-standing building offers a
‘catered to’ experience for patients. And, as part of the Memorial Healthcare campus, it is regulated and
supported by one of the most trusted teams of providers in the community.
“It’s amazing, really beautiful. Patients will like it more!”
Dr. Skjaerlund knows that patients feel self-conscious about gastroenterology procedures. Until now, patients
were faced with navigating a bustling medical center, busy examination and recovery rooms. and perhaps not
as much privacy as they’d prefer.
With the opening of the new Medical Arts Building, patients will park steps away from a beautiful new
Gastroenterology Center. Here there will be an environment where patient privacy is a top priority and family
members or friends can relax in a waiting area designed for their comfort and enjoyment.
Dr. Skjaerlund is hoping that more patients will see the new Gastroenterology Center and be reminded to
ask their doctor if it’s time for a routine screening (especially if someone is nearing the age of 50). As a
Gastroenterologist at Memorial for the past 14 years, she knows early detection and prevention are crucial in
treating colon cancer.
The Endoscopy Team and we, as physicians, had a say in designing the new center. Patients have private
rooms, a lovely atmosphere and the “best of the best” equipment for screening, diagnostics and treatment.
The new center is great news for patients. It will be a great atmosphere for busy doctors such as Memorial’s
Gastroenterologists, Drs. Skjaerlund and Ronald Angles, as well as Cathy Kershen, D.O., who will be opening
a new practice in the Memorial Medical Arts Building.
“I’m a busy mother of three,” says Dr. Skjaerlund, “my plate is full!” This includes shepherding her children to
school, sports and church-related activities as well as the community YMCA. When there’s time, she takes in
a kickboxing class at the hospital. This doctor knows you need to take care of yourself — and that’s the best
advice of all.

It’s tough in mid-Michigan. Shiawassee County is currently the fastest growing Medicaid county
in the State of Michigan, where 1 in 4 area residents are without any medical insurance or on
Medicaid. Subsequently, many individuals within our communities have long been ignoring their
need for medical attention, or are allowing minor medical conditions to grow into medical emergencies.
“Memorial, in collaboration with the Health and Human Services Council, identified that need and
took the lead,” said Cathy Stevenson, Memorial Community Resource Liaison. “We wanted to offer
a clinic that would serve the community and provide a ‘medical home’ to those who had none.
After careful research, Health Delivery, Inc., of Saginaw was invited to set up Shiawassee County’s
first-ever Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) in December of 2007.”
Designed to serve the uninsured and under insured, the Mobile Medical Unit accepts all patients
regardless of ability to pay. Patients pay on a sliding fee scale, based on income. All patients are
encouraged to make appointments, walk-ins are welcome, although nobody is ever turned away.
The staff of the MMU wants patients to think of this as their new medical home — a place
where their records are kept, where they are known, where conditions can be treated before they
become emergency situations. “Patients are encouraged to come back,” said Stevenson, “so we
can watch out for them.” The MMU is also a place where community residents have access to
information regarding Medicaid benefits and other available assistance such as WIC (Women
Infants Children) food programs, well baby care, and immunizations and vaccinations for children
— plus prescription payment assistance.
Memorial Healthcare is proud to support the MMU by hosting the medical facility at the hospital’s
North Campus on North M-52. We provide office space and administration support, x-rays and lab
testing at a sliding fee, medical equipment, office equipment and phone services.
And even though it’s currently a ‘mobile’ medical unit — plans for a permanent Shiawassee
Community Health Center are already underway. “In the future, the clinic plans to offer mental
health care, dental care and transportation assistance,” said Stevenson.
The Mobile Medical Unit accepts Medicaid, uninsured and underinsured patients.

Memorial Healthcare partners with Habitat for Humanity.
For Brian White, Director of Facilities Services at Memorial, the past year has been very busy. During the course of a day
or week Brian knows the intricacies of every square inch of every Memorial Healthcare building — and for that you need
to be on the move.
When Memorial purchased — and needed to demo — 17 houses to build the new Medical Arts Building, the easiest
thing to do would have been to bring in the wrecking ball and truck away the debris. Instead, Brian helped to connect
Memorial Healthcare with the Shiawassee County Habitat for Humanity… a move that greatly benefited the community.
Memorial was able to allow Habitat to salvage anything they could reuse, recycle, or resale from those 17 homes — also
known as ‘deconstruction.’ Some of the homes had recent remodeling, so Habitat made good use of vinyl siding,
cabinets, lighting fixtures, windows, sinks and other items. With deconstruction, up to 85 percent of a home can be put
to good use on other projects. What cannot be reused can often be sold. Many area homeowners were pleased to be able
to purchase relatively new doors and windows to improve their homes at very affordable prices.
The results of these efforts?
Salvaging building materials helped Habitat for Humanity generate funds that were used to build a home in 2007 for an
Owosso family, a project supported by many area individuals and experienced builders.
For Sarah Warren-Riley, Executive Director for the local branch of Habitat for Humanity, her first experience with Memorial
Healthcare was a very good one. “I’ve always known Memorial to be generous to the community, but this was above and
beyond generous.”
As Memorial Healthcare moves forward with its campus expansion project, it will continue to work with Habitat to
find use for gently used materials. As for Brian White, he will continue to volunteer as board treasurer for Habitat for
Humanity. He is looking ahead to future facility improvement projects at Memorial Healthcare. And in his spare time? He
and his family have a building project of their own — renovating a 115-year old residence in Corunna.
For more information on the availability of used material or ways you can volunteer with
Habitat for Humanity, call (989) 723-9776.

Patient care reached a higher dimension in September of 2007 when Memorial Healthcare opened
its new Diagnostic Center. Located just North of downtown Owosso, this center offers patients
the most advanced patient tracking efficiencies and provides staff with the flexibility of a high-tech
communication system.
For the convenience of our patients, we relocated key staff members from laboratory, diagnostic
imaging and occupational medicine services to the new Diagnostic Center. They were specially
trained to use a powerful patient tracking system that would let every staff member in the building
know exactly who was waiting for services and when the patient was ready. During every step
of a patient’s visit, staff can discern where the patient is in the process of care. When there are
questions, staff members no longer have to leave a patient to go in search of information. A device
worn about the neck lets the person contact other departments at the touch of a button.
The end result of putting together a dedicated team and the most up-to-the minute technologies
is a facility that has significantly shortened the length of a patient visit. The average visit for a
laboratory or x-ray patient at the Diagnostic location is less than nine minutes from their time
of arrival until departure. Thanks to the efforts of this team these technologies are now being
evaluated and individualized for registration and other service areas throughout the hospital.
Services provided at the Memorial Healthcare Diagnostics location include:
• Laboratory Blood Draws
• Anti-Coagulation Therapy
• X-ray and CT Scan
• Digital Mammography Ultrasound
• Stereotactic Biopsy
• Occupational Medicine
No appointments are necessary for lab and x-ray services at our
Diagnostics Center located at 100 Health Park Drive in Owosso.
A sophisticated tracking system ensureswait times are reduced for patients atthe Diagnostic Center.

32. Ask any physician what it is that made them want
to practice medicine as a career and you will most
likely hear that they enjoy the relationships they
build with patients. For primary care physicians,
those relationships are often formed during the
treatment of usual illnesses experienced by adults
and their children. These relationships strengthen
when unexpected problems occur such as the onset
of diabetes and heart disease or the aftermath of a
severe injury.
Memorial Medical Associates (MMA), a division of
the hospital, is committed to serving this region by
managing and staffing primary care physician offices
in Chesaning, Durand, Elsie, Laingsburg, Ovid,
Owosso and Perry. These physician offices provide
a wide range of expert services including well
baby visits, immunizations, routine physicals and
screenings, illness management, disease management and referral to specialists when necessary.
All of our doctors truly care about the wellbeing of their patients and the communities in which
they practice. As physicians they understand that being involved in the community as a resident,
volunteer and business partner is very important to the vitality and quality of life of their patients.
According to Dr. David Charles, “What gives me the most satisfaction and keeps me coming to
work every day is my interactions with people and being able to help them identify the cause of
their problem so that we can work together to form a solution.”

38. You can — and expect their response
to be amazing!
“Join the Courageous” is a community-wide campaign that aimes to raise $1.75
million dollars for the Cancer Center at the new Memorial Medical Arts Building.
Donations have come from physicians and staff of the hospital, as well as residents
of Shiawassee County. “We’ve had a very positive reception from the community
— especially from people who have been affected by cancer, and who have
experienced the difficulty of long drives for lengthy radiation courses,” said Tom
Cook, co-chair of the “Join the Courageous” campaign.
As “Join the Courageous” attains its goal, the funds allow the Cancer Center
to go beyond just being a medical facility — to become a high quality “healing
environment” with a library, healing garden and so much more.
“With this new facility,” said Cook, “people can see Memorial’s commitment to providing the best care and
the best environment to the community, and it’s been nice to see a creative community response.”
“Join the Courageous” is Memorial’s first capital fundraising campaign since 1967 — and has been a huge
success from the start. In fact, over $1 million of the targeted $1.75 million was raised prior to the ground
breaking ceremony for the new Memorial Medical Arts Building in May of 2007.

Each holiday season, Auxiliary members from
Memorial Healthcare honor special loved ones with
a holiday “Community Tree of Love.” This is a
thoughtful way to honor special loved ones and also
make a lasting contribution toward helping others.
In 2007, donations from the Community Tree of
Love supported the Memorial Healthcare Foundation
“Join the Courageous” cancer center campaign.
The grand tree in the hospital’s front lobby was
beautifully decorated with personalized snowflakes
and doves and the names of honorees were listed in
a special book displayed in the lobby. In addition to
the Community Tree of Love, the Auxiliary offered
youth throughout the region an opportunity to participate in a “Kids Tree of Love.” A donation of any
amount allowed a child to place a red heart on this special tree.

Go Blue! Go Green!
Tailgate Party
Memorial Healthcare Foundation hosted
its annual Go Blue! Go Green! Tailgate
party on November 1 at Steve’s Place in
the Comstock Inn (Owosso). All were
welcome to attend this high-spirited, in-state
rivalry event. Activities held throughout the
evening included spirit merchandise sales, a
cash raffle and a charity silent auction. The
fundraising challenge between Michigan
State University and University of Michigan
fans netted proceeds to support “Join the
Courageous” — a campaign for the Cancer
Center at Memorial Healthcare. Special
thanks to Flint Clinical Pathologists, the
presenting sponsor for the event.
Cheering on their respective teams were
Go Green! Chair, Jim Buffa and Go Blue!
Chair, Troy Crowe.

Golf Benefit Hole in One
A glorious morning and sunny afternoon welcomed golfers to the
2007 Golf fundraiser at the Owosso Country Club. More than $85,000
was raised to provide funds to support the ongoing efforts of the
Memorial FIT Kids program. The unique screening program assesses the
cardiovascular risk of the region’s sixth graders, provides educational
support throughout the seventh grade and a re-evaluation of eating
habits in the eighth grade. The program has collected data for the past
three years which indicates that 37 percent of sixth graders already
have three or more risk factors for heart disease. A special thank you is
extended to the 2007 golf outing sponsors and golfers.

Barbara Munson, M.D., lovingly served the

Barbara Munson, M.D.
Humanitarian of the Year
Barbara Munson, M.D., a long-time Owosso pediatrician,
was posthumously honored with Memorial Healthcare’s
Margaret S. Gulick Humanitarian of the Year award in
2007. According to Memorial President and CEO, Cheryl
Peterson, “Dr. Munson’s expertise and gentle guidance
was an inspiration to her family, colleagues, patients and
families. She was an individual who stood up for those
who couldn’t speak up for themselves. She is and will
continue to be greatly missed by the Memorial family and
others who knew her”.
During her tenure as beloved pediatrician at Memorial,
Dr. Munson exhibited unending dedication to children and
their parents. For the last four years, Dr. Munson dedicated
her time and efforts in support of the Memorial FIT Kids
program which provides FREE health screening and
education to students in the sixth through eighth grades.
She also served as a strong supporter and advocate for the
development of a free clinic to serve the county’s uninsured
and underinsured patients, a vision that became reality in
December of 2007.
