Students in the Co-op Program incorporate a paid, supervised work-
experience component into their degree programs. They gain valuable
experience through full- time employment sequenced with academic
terms.
At the U of A, Co-op students make up greater than 50% per cent of students beyond first year. A co-
operative degree takes five years to complete. In addition to the traditional four years of academic
study (eight four-month academic terms), Co-op students also complete five four-month work terms.
These consist of full-time paid employment in positions related to their field of study.

U of A Engineering Co-op students are on the job at hundreds of businesses across the country. They
help meet project deadlines, free up staff time for peak workloads or vacations. They give businesses a
sneak preview of potential future employees.

Students complete nearly half of their engineering education before taking on any work placements. In
other words, they are qualified, enthusiastic, and ready to work. Best of all, they are easy to hire. Our
Co-op Coordinators match student expertise with industry need. Drawing from one of the country’s
largest programs, they can find the right young engineer for the job – no matter what that job may be.
